MAYA'S POV

"What?" The Grandmistress turns her attention to me.

"The glass picture." I point towards it. I slowly move to the wall and trace my fingers along the edges. Same face... eyes... but yet completely different. This isn't the girl from California; the woman in this portrait looks like she's lived a thousand lives I haven't.

"That's just a painting of the old academy." Kylie says without looking twice.

I tilt my head sideways to try and see the academy in this painting, but all I can see is my reflection clothed in royalty and staring back at me. "You don't see the woman?"

"Who?" She frowns and glances away. "That's just stone and dark clouds."

I turn to Kylie. Can't she really see what I'm seeing? "Forget it, I'm probably just seeing things because I'm in a stupid academy." I sigh, but a chill runs down my back if this academy doesn't have any record of me. Why am I here, then?

"You should go on to your classes now."

I nod, then I sprint. I have no idea where I'm running off to.... the painting, the door; I just run, but immediately I touch the doorknob, the door vanishes into thin air.

"Doors only open here when we want them to." The Grandmistress's voice is maddeningly calm. She really thinks I can't escape, huh? "You'll learn all about it in time."

I turn around, glaring at her as my heart beats loudly against my chest.

"So, let's try this again." She clears her throat. "You should probably go to class." Her tone this time is hard, leaving no room for argument.

But I argue anyways. "No, I want to go home, not join some weird magical cult."

"You'll adjust with time." She says with a tight smile.

My feet twitch. My brain literally screams at me to run again, and I nearly do, but I stop myself because I need answers more than escape right now. I scoff. "Fine, I'll go to class. I'll sign up for wand waving and monster anatomy while I'm at it."

"That's better. I'll send someone to give you a tour." She smiles; her calm demeanor is back.

I sit back on the chair opposite her desk, knotting my fingers and staring around for the quickest escape from here, when suddenly the door is kicked open. I turn my head towards the door, and goodness, I'm awestruck. Everything in the background fades, and I'm staring at the man walking through the door in slow motion.

He's tall and lean, and damn, his posture is perfect. The way he walks in that black tailored suit commands absolute attention. If I said the wolfish guy in my mirror or the blueish guy in my dream was hot, then I'm a fool because this man has set my entire body on fire, and I'm shamelessly ogling him.

But there's something oddly familiar about it, like we've met or known each other before in a past life... Stupid! My sigil is glowing and burning my skin. It's weird, but I feel like it remembers something my brain doesn't.

His skin is very pale, and his black hair is slicked back perfectly with only a few rebellious strands falling on his forehead. He's got crimson-colored eyes, angular features, a straight nose, and thin lips. Everything about him is freaking hot, even the silver tattoo on his jaw that sneaks into the collar of his suit. There's the aura he carries... like a mysterious prince of darkness. A kind of person I shouldn't even dare look in the eyes, but he flashes a light smirk at me before taking his seat.

"Jaden Mcleech, welcome to Blood Valley Academy. I'm Kylie, the Grandmistress of Blood Valley Academy."

"It's Leech." He corrects with a low, effortless wave.

She smiles, tapping on her temples. "Leech, You're a transfer student from the Shadows Academy, and you're actually way above your peers academically. You've mastered top skills in blood magic which none of our students have. You're thriving academically. Welcome!" She glances at the system on her desk, tapping something on the keyboard, then she looks up at me. "Make that four top students assigned to Maya Carter as guardians for training and full coverage."

"Four?? Isn't that too much?"

Kylie doesn't answer, but I see the way her fingers stiffen for a second. Either I'm dangerous... or valuable.

"Give me a minute." Kylie walks to the empty space in the wall where the door was positioned a few minutes ago. "Maya, if you remember things... you can't explain, make sure I'm the first person you tell." She says before walking through the wall and stepping out.

What the... I clutch my chest with my right hand to keep my heart from falling out, while pressing my fingers too tightly against the chair, something sharp pierces through my thumb. "Ouch!" I lift my hands up to my face to inspect it. I'm bleeding.

"May I?" The hot transfer student beside me—Jaden points toward my bleeding thumb. "I can stop the bleeding." He's smiling at me and it's really hypnotic.

A flash of the wolfish guy I stumbled into in the hallway crosses my mind. He seemed mad on seeing me, like he didn't want me here, but this pale-looking dude is actually excited I'm here? I can't help it, but I feel like they're both hiding something.

I nod and point my thumb toward Jaden who gently holds it, and I notice a large signet ring on his thumb. He runs his tongue around my bruise, licking the blood off. "Your blood is still as sweet as I remembered."

Remembered?

He lifts his head to stare at my lips through those sinful eyes. "So... the queen finally decides to return?"

Queen? Okay, I have to stop him there. "What did you just call me?"

"My Queen. Even if the whole immortal realm forgets you, I never will." He bows his head, and as if on cue, the sigil on my arm shines so bright I have to block my face with my hands.

Sophie The place where the demon had been was empty now. The shadows were gone. The air felt lighter. But it wasn’t over because Darren was still standing and looking at me like he wanted to tear me apart. “You think you’ve won?” he said, his voice low and sharp. My chest was still rising and falling too fast, my body shaking from everything that just happened. But I forced myself to stand straight. “To be honest?” I said. “Yeah. I do.” His jaw tightened. “You’re nothing without that thing,” I added. “And now it’s gone.” Something dangerous flickered in his eyes. “You’re wrong.” He moved. Fast. I barely had time to react before he was in front of me, his hand shooting out but this time I was ready. I stepped back just enough to avoid his grip and drove my elbow straight into his side. He grunted, stumbling slightly. “You’ve gotten better,” he said, circling me slowly. “I had a good teacher,” I replied. His lips twitched. “Was it me?” “No,” I said flatly. “Pain was.” That

Sophie I stood by the window, staring up at the sky. The moon was already rising. “The Blood Moon,” I muttered under my breath. It hadn’t turned red yet—but it soon would and when it did… Everything Darren and that demon planned would start. “You should get some rest.” Reece’s voice came from behind me. I didn’t turn. “I don’t think sleep is an option tonight.” “Probably not,” he admitted. I glanced over my shoulder at him. He looked like a focused and prepared Alpha. “We’ve positioned guards around the perimeter,” he continued. “Everyone knows something’s coming.” “They don’t know what,” I said. “No,” he agreed. “And we’re not telling them yet.” I nodded slowly. “Panic won’t help.” “Exactly.” We both went quiet. They was too many things unsaid. “You can still stay out of this,” he said after a moment. I turned fully this time. “No.” “Sophie—” “No,” I repeated. “I started this. I’m finishing it.” His jaw tightened slightly. “This isn’t your fight alone.” “I know.”

Sophie For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. Reece eyes were still on me like he was trying to see through me. I shifted slightly, my back still pressed against the wall. My throat hurt from where the demon had held me, and my body felt weak, but that wasn’t what made it hard to breathe. It was him. The way he was looking at me. “You’re okay?” he asked again, his voice lower this time. I nodded. “I said I’m fine.” “You’re not fine.” I let out a small breath. “Compared to being dead, I think I’m doing great.” His jaw tightened. “This isn’t a joke, Sophie.” My name again. He didn't call me Evelyn, nor Luna but Sophie. Something in my chest twisted. “I know,” I said quietly. He took another step closer. Then stopped like he didn’t trust himself to get any nearer. “You’re really going to stand there,” he said, “and act like everything is normal?” I frowned slightly. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “It means,” he said, his voice hardening, “you lied to me.”

Sophie I found a metal door which was different from the others. It was slightly open. My heart leaped. An exit. I moved toward it quickly, pushing it open just enough to peek outside. Cool night air hit my face. I almost laughed but then a sound distracted me and, footsteps followed closely. My heart slammed against my ribs. I turned and froze because standing at the end of the corridor watching me was the demon. The moment I saw him, I knew I was in trouble. He just stood there relaxed at the end of the corridor like he had been expecting me all along. Like my little escape attempt was nothing more than mild entertainment. “Well,” he said, his voice quiet and steady. “That didn’t take long.” I didn’t answer immediately. My heart was racing, but I forced myself to stay still, to think. “I got tired of sitting,” I said finally. He smiled a little. “I can see that.“ He started walking toward me in slow steps like he already knew how this was going to end. I didn’t mo

Sophie Meanwhile, back in the warehouse… The rope around my wrists finally snapped. I slowly pulled my hands free. Pain shot through my arms as blood rushed back into my fingers but I didn’t care because I was free and now the real game could begin. For a few seconds, I just sat there. My hands were actually free. I flexed my fingers slowly, ignoring the sharp pins-and-needles shooting through them. The skin around my wrists was raw and sore, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was that I wasn’t helpless anymore. I leaned forward and quickly worked on the rope around my ankles. It took less time this time. My fingers were steadier, faster. The knot loosened and slipped off. I pushed myself up to my feet. My legs nearly gave out immediately. “Damn it,” I muttered under my breath, grabbing the edge of the chair to steady myself. I hadn’t realized how long I’d been sitting there, or how weak I’d gotten. I forced myself to stand straight, taking slow breaths until the dizzi

Sophie The warehouse grew quiet after that. Darren eventually left the room, his footsteps echoing down the hallway until they disappeared. The demon stayed for a little while longer, leaning against the wall and watching me. I refused to look at him. Every time my eyes drifted toward him, I pictured my parents’ bodies. The burning house. The night my entire life fell apart. If the ropes around my wrists weren’t there, I would’ve launched myself at him. Eventually, he spoke. “You’re thinking very loudly.” I didn’t respond. “I can almost hear the gears turning in that clever little head of yours.” Still nothing. He chuckled softly. “You’re planning something.” I finally looked at him. “What makes you think that?” His dark eyes gleamed. “Because humans and wolves always think they’re smarter than they are.” I smiled faintly. “And demons don’t?” “No,” he said calmly. “We know we are.” I leaned my head back against the wall. “You talk too much.” He tilted his head. “You’re
