Chapter 6

7:15 a.m. Ken slept off in the office and woke up to the vibrating sound of his phone. "Grrrr, grrrr, grrrr, what the!!! Can't a grown-up man enjoy his own peace?" he grumbled, his fingers squeezing his face.

"Who could it be this early?" The vibration continued while he struggled to get his phone. "Oh, why is her father calling this early?" he wondered to himself. "Ken," the voice on the other side called at him, "I heard what happened to Kate, and I really felt bad at what's going on," Kate's father said.

"Well, I wouldn't have expected such would happen, truly. I left her looking hale and healthy at the hospital, only to get called at the middle of the night she's in a coma," Ken replied.

"Ken, we both know how important wedding nights mean to women. Why couldn't you just fake it and spend the night with her that day? You shouldn't be that selfish," her father said.

"Do I need to remind you of the concept of this marriage?" Ken asked sharply. "We both know the wedding happened just because you do not want to lose your company.

you couldn't tell your own daughter what she was getting into just because you had no other option than to put her down as collateral. So tell me, who's more selfish here?" Ken snapped back.

"Don't you talk to me in that manner," her father snapped at him. "What arrogance? That aside, I'm heading to the hospital now, and you should do the same."

"I can't," Ken answered, "I have more important things to get my hands on. Besides, it's still very early. As soon as I'm done, I'll come over."

"Okay, suit yourself, but remember nothing must go wrong with Kate. You signing that deal doesn't put you in a position to jeopardize my daughter's health. Your deal could be at stake too. Think about it," her father hung up.

"How dare he threaten me? Who does he think he is? My deal at stake? How funny," Ken grumbled. "Why are you in a coma, Kate?" he asked, talking to himself as if she was standing right there. "I need a drink right this moment," he jumped towards his drink shelf and poured himself a glass. "Arrgh, man's relieved now," he said.

Going back and forth at the hospital was Kate's mom, just like every mother would do. She was unable to sleep all through the night. She kept checking on her, even though the nurses refused her entry into the room Kate's in.

"Why isn't he here yet?" she asked herself. "What kind of man leaves his wife at the hospital without checking on her? Have we not made the wrong choice? Oh, my poor baby girl," she exclaimed.

She was startled by the voice calling out to her behind. "Oh darling, you need to see how our poor baby girl looks in there," she said to her husband, who looked sad already. "Shush," he said to her, "stay calm, sweetie. She'll be fine. Where's the doctor, and what's the progress?" he asked.

"They all said to me to wait behind. They've been in there for hours now. I'm worried and not having a good feeling about this."

"Don't say that," he pulled her close to him. "Trust me, they're definitely doing their job. In no time, she'll be fine and out of a coma," he assured.

Though they both looked old, one would feel the love between them still young as it was when they first met.

"You shouldn't have handed her over to that bastard as a bride, you know," she said to her husband. "What other options do I have? You know what was at stake, and definitely, I need to save my ass and clean off my tracks. She'll be fine. It's just a coma. It's not the end of the world," he replied back sharply.

"What did you just say? What difference are you from Ken? All you both care about was the deal. Was Kate's well-being put into consideration? You both are just being selfish, you know that.

Your only interest was you not losing your deal. What kind of father does that to his daughter?"

"Hey! Don't call me that," he snapped back at her. "Don't you create a scene on me here right now," he warned her sternly.

She was getting more furious at the moment already. She wanted to vent her anger on him. She opened her mouth to utter more insulting words but was interrupted by a nurse who said Kate's awake.

She jumped for joy. "Thank you, Gracious Lord," she bowed her head, showing gratitude to the Most High. "Can I see her now?" she asked.

"No, not now, ma'am. Nothing whatsoever is wrong with her, but I think she has a lot going through her mind. This led to the shock and her struggling to breathe at night, which ended up in a coma.

But we're glad it was a short one. She's fine now but needs to rest a lot, so I'd say you can't see her now, ma'am, but soon you will," the nurse instructed.

"I'll go grab food and a change of clothes so she gets some food to eat and clothes to wear," her mother said while heading out.

"Hmmm, this woman is becoming too fearless, too much energy she had activated. She really snapped at me with those words. That bastard of a husband put me in this situation," Kate's father grumbled while heading towards the car too."
