🌸VIOLET🌸

The fourth flag nearly cost me my life.

I found it wedged deep inside the hollow of an enormous, ancient tree, its bark split wide and rotted soft at the edges, the whole trunk smelling like wet decay. I reached in, my fingers brushing damp, crumbling wood and something skittering across my knuckles that I refused to think too hard about, and pulled the flag free with a hard tug.

Four.

I let myself grin, my chest heaving, sweat stinging in my eyes. "One more."

Then something sla

🌸VIOLET 🌸 The door clicked shut behind us, and the sound of it landed somewhere low in my stomach, heavier than a door closing had any right to feel. I followed him further into the room, still fighting that smile, taking in dark walls and low, warm lighting and furniture arranged with the same deliberate precision as everything else this man owned, everything about him engineered to look effortless while costing a fortune. This was good. This was exactly what I needed tonight. Money, and Xavier Knight happened to be sitting right here, offering it up without me even having to ask. Perfect. Except there was one small, inconvenient truth I couldn't quite smother no matter how hard I tried. I had wanted him to be the one waiting here tonight before I even knew whose house this was. Angel wants him. That's different, I told myself, and I almost believed it. He watched me settle into the room, and there was something about the particular way he did it, unhurried, thorough, like h

🌸VIOLET 🌸 The mansion came into view just as the driver turned through the enormous iron gates, and I forgot how to breathe for a second. It was beautiful. Not beautiful in the warm, welcoming sort of way a home is supposed to be beautiful. Beautiful in the way a place becomes beautiful when someone has enough money to make absolutely certain nobody without permission ever gets close to it. Tall stone walls surrounded the entire property, pale in the moonlight, and lights burned steady along the long, curved driveway, illuminating hedges trimmed into perfect, unnatural lines and massive trees that looked like they had been planted specifically to make the house behind them seem even more imposing than it already was. And the security. Guards stood everywhere I looked. At the gates, along the driveway, near the entrance itself, each of them standing with their hands clasped behind their backs, eyes constantly sweeping the grounds in slow, practiced arcs. I stared through the tin

🌸VIOLET 🌸 By the time I reached the club, I had already told myself at least twenty separate times that I was not coming here for him. I was coming because I needed money, plain and simple. Money for Lily's medication, money for my mother's supplements, money for loan sharks who had apparently decided that breathing peacefully was some kind of privilege I had not yet earned in their eyes. Xavier had absolutely nothing to do with any of it. Except I found myself glancing toward the entrance anyway, just once, and then again, and then a third time before I caught myself doing it and mentally slapped my brain into submission. What the hell was wrong with me? After everything that had happened the previous night, the last person I should have been hoping to see anywhere near this building was Xavier Knight, especially after that kiss. My fingers rose toward my own lips before I could stop the motion, and I dropped my hand fast the second I noticed. "No." Absolutely not. I was not t

♣️XAVIER♣️ The first thing Dorian noticed was the music. The second was the people. The third was the fact that all of them were currently standing inside my private mansion, drinking from glasses I owned, laughing too loud in rooms I usually kept locked against exactly this kind of noise. He stood beside me on the second floor, staring down at the crowd filling the open living area below, his expression caught somewhere between confusion and open suspicion, and I couldn't blame him for either reaction. I hated people in my house. I hated loud music even more than that. Yet tonight my mansion held both in abundance, music rolling thick through the open space below us, bass vibrating faintly beneath my boots through the floor itself while people laughed and drank and moved across the polished tile in loose, unsteady clusters. I had dimmed most of the lights on purpose, leaving the whole room washed in warm gold and long, shifting shadows. Dorian turned his head slowly toward me. "W

🌸VIOLET🌸 The house sat strangely, unsettlingly quiet when I finally made it back home, none of the usual clatter of breakfast dishes or staff moving briskly through the halls, nothing but a heavy, waiting silence that immediately set something uneasy crawling low in my stomach the moment I stepped through the door. I turned down the hallway toward the bedrooms instead of heading directly to my own room, some instinct pulling me toward Lily's door first. I had not actually been inside her room properly since we had moved into this house, always meaning to find the time and never quite managing it between training and shifts and everything else currently eating my days alive from every direction. I knocked lightly and pushed the door open without waiting for a response. "Oh." The word slipped out of me soft and involuntary at the sight of the room itself, soft pink walls and carefully arranged bedding, delicate curtains framing the window, small decorative items lined neat along t

🌸VIOLET🌸 I arrived late, which came as no surprise whatsoever given the general trajectory my morning had already taken. Nothing quite draws unwanted attention to a person like walking into a training ground full of exhausted, battle-worn recruits several minutes after everyone else has already assembled into neat, orderly rows. I slowed my pace the moment I got to the entrance, and my stomach performed some complicated, unwelcome maneuver the second I spotted him standing at the front of the formation, his back turned partially toward the entrance, his voice carrying low and steady across the assembled recruits. Then he turned, and his eyes found mine almost instantly, as though he had already known the precise second I would walk through that gate and had simply been waiting for confirmation. Our gazes locked hard across the yard. My stomach clenched painfully in response. Nothing on his face shifted at all. No amusement flickered anywhere behind his eyes, no smirk pulled at
