Anna's pov

I was already dressed when I opened Amyra’s door.

“Time to get up, baby”, I said as I entered Amyra's room. She lay curled on her side, one arm under the pillow, and the other resting lightly over her chest. I sat on the edge of the mattress and brushed a curl from her forehead.

Her eyes opened slowly. She blinked, then stretched both arms until her small fists trembled in the air. I waited until she sat up before guiding her toward the bathroom.

The water ran warm. I helped her out of her sleep shirt and into the tub, washing her hair carefully so the soap would not sting her eyes. She hummed the days-of-the-week song under her breath while I rinsed the last of the shampoo. When I lifted her out and wrapped the towel around her shoulders, she leaned against me for a moment, still half-asleep, before I dried her off and reached for the yellow dress with the stars along the hem.

She stood still while I buttoned the back, then turned in a slow circle so the skirt would flare. I combed her hair, separating the damp curls with my fingers.

“What did you learn yesterday?” I asked.

Amyra thought for a second, lips pressed together. “Teacher showed us counting by twos and we sang the song again. I already knew it. Maya kept saying ‘Wensday’ wrong.” She giggled, then grew serious. “Is Maya coming today? She said her throat hurt.”

“I don’t know. We’ll see when we get there.” I smoothed the last curl into place. “Did you put your homework folder in the bag last night?”

She froze. “I forgot.”

I pointed to the small desk. She ran over, grabbed the folder, and held it up. I checked the bag myself, water bottle, snack box, extra hair tie, and the folder. Everything was there. I zipped it closed and set it by the door.

In the kitchen I poured her milk and set a plate of toast and sliced banana in front of her. She climbed onto the chair and swung her legs while she ate. I stood at the counter with my coffee, already calculating the minutes left before we needed to be on the bus.

“How is Teacher Lin?” I asked.

Amyra swallowed a mouthful of banana. “She’s nice. She liked my drawing of the quiet room. She said the blue walls were a good idea. Can I finish the roof garden today? The blue crayon broke yesterday.”

“If you finish your classwork first.”

She nodded, then looked up at me with sudden interest. “Mommy, are the buildings still going well? The ones you’re making at the glass place?”

I set the cup down. My fingers stayed wrapped around it a second longer than necessary.

“They’re going, slowly. But they’re going.”

Amyra’s eyes brightened. “Don’t forget the rainbow windows. You promised.”

“I remember. You concentrate on school. The buildings will still be there when you’re ready.”

She considered this, then smiled and returned to her toast.

I wiped the crumbs from her mouth, helped her into her shoes, and checked the time again. We were already behind.

At the school gate Amyra hugged my waist tightly. I crouched so we were level and smoothed her collar once more.

“Be good. Listen to Teacher Lin. I’ll pick you up later.”

“I will. Build something pretty today.”

I kissed the top of her head and watched her walk through the entrance with the other children before I turned to leave.

“Ms. Li?”

The voice stopped me mid-step. I turned, surprised. Teacher Lin stood a few paces away, a folder held against her chest. Her expression was careful, almost hesitant.

“Could I speak with you for a moment about Amyra?”

My stomach tightened. I glanced at my phone. The numbers were already later than I had planned. The company’s rules sat heavy in the front of my mind, “arrive on time, no exceptions, no excuses”.

“I’m sorry,” I said, the words coming faster than I intended. “I have to get to work. Can I call you later today, or come by after I finish?”

Teacher Lin’s grip on the folder shifted. She nodded, though the careful look did not leave her face. “Of course. It’s nothing that can’t wait until then. Please call when you can.”

I thanked her and walked away quickly. Once past the gate my steps lengthened. The residual weight of her expression stayed with me, the sense that whatever she needed to say was not small. My chest felt tight. I forced my breathing to stay even and kept moving.

On the bus I checked the time again. Later than expected. My fingers tightened around the phone until the edge pressed white against my skin. I forced them open and stared at the passing streets, counting the remaining minutes, the teacher’s unfinished request sitting unresolved in the back of my mind alongside the clock.

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 20-A GHOST FROM THE PAST

Anna's POV The next morning, I walked Amyra to the school gate and waited until she disappeared inside with the other children. Teacher Lin was already standing near the entrance, folder in hand. She caught my eye and stepped closer.“Ms. Li. Thank you for making time.”I nodded once, fingers tightening around the strap of my bag. I could already guess what she wanted to talk to me about. “You wanted to speak about Amyra”, I asked calmly.Teacher Lin’s voice stayed low. “She’s been participating well, but I’ve noticed she always more rest after longer activities. The interschool singing competition is in three weeks and she wants to join. I think it’s good for her, but I'm afraid rehearsal stretches would be too stressful for her to handle. I wanted you to know so you can decide.”My chest tightened. I kept my face steady and swallowed once before answering. “If she wants to join the competition, then please let her. I'll speak with her and make sure she's careful. You can keep the

Anna's POV It was already after nine when I got home. The living room light was still on. Mama sat on the sofa with a folded scarf in her lap. Papa looked up from the small table where he had been sorting pharmacy receipts.“You’re late again,” Mama said, but her voice held no sharp edge.“The work ran long.” I set my bag down and loosened the top button of my blouse. “Everything is fine. The project is moving.”Papa nodded once. “Good. We’re proud of you.”Mama’s hands stilled on the scarf. “As long as you’re eating and sleeping a little.”“I am.” I gave them both a small smile that felt thinner than I intended. “I’m going to check on Amyra.”They did not stop me.I pushed her door open carefully. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of the night-light she still needed. Amyra lay on her side, one arm tucked under the pillow, the other resting lightly over her chest the way she always slept. Her curls had spilled across the pillow. The yellow dress from the morning was folded

Anna's POV The messages kept arriving.I finished the wind-load notes and sent the revised model back to Jun with three clear instructions. Before the reply came, Mei appeared at my door with a cost summary from Finance. The material substitution they proposed would save money on the east tower cladding but changed the thermal performance enough to affect the environmental targets. I compared the two reports side by side, marked the conflicting lines, and called the Procurement desk.A woman named Helen answered. Her voice was brisk, already mid-calculation on another project. I explained the conflict without raising my tone. She listened, asked for the exact specification numbers, and promised a revised quote by mid-afternoon. I thanked her and ended the call, then forwarded the marked pages to the Environmental team with a short note requesting their assessment of the performance drop.Emily returned with a tablet full of coordination requests. We sat at the side table and worked t

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 17-THE RULE EVERYONE FEARED

Anna's POV I stepped through the glass doors of Mo Ting Global twelve minutes past the hour. My pulse sat high in my throat. The company’s rules on punctuality were not suggestions. Mr. Kim had made that clear on the first day, and every floor still moved as if those rules were written into the walls. I expected someone to stop me…a note, a look or a quiet summons. Instead the lobby continued its usual flow of people with passes and purpose. I kept my head level and walked toward the elevators, fingers tight around the strap of my bag. On the fifty-eighth floor, the Planning & Development Division was already working. People's working screens glowed, conversations stayed low. I moved through the open area toward the cluster of workstations that belonged to the Eco-City team and into the small office assigned to me as Assistant Architectural Director. The door closed behind me with a soft click. I set my bag down, sat, and opened the laptop before my hands could start to shake.

  • MY ONE-NIGHT STAND BOSS   CHAPTER 15- THE FIRST CRACK

Anna's POV The document room door closed behind me with a soft click.I set the recovered plots on the counter and pressed both palms flat against the cool surface. The brief contact of his hand on my arm still registered, warmth, pressure, the automatic strength of it. I drew one slow breath, then another, until the tightness in my chest eased enough to move.I sorted the sheets by number, stacked them neatly, and returned to my desk. The open floor continued its quiet rhythm. No one commented on the collision. I opened the West Ridge file and forced my attention onto the revised lighting calculations. An hour later a message appeared on my screen.“Conference Room B. West Ridge coordination. Now”.I gathered the latest prints and walked the short corridor. Andreas was already seated at the head of the table with two structural engineers and one project manager. He glanced up once when I entered, then returned his eyes to the tablet in front of him.I took the remaining chair and la
