I turned as soon as I sensed something behind me.

But when I looked back there was nothing in sight. Just the shrubs and bushes closest to the stream.

My eyes narrowed at one bush in particular. I thought I had seen it shake slightly.

Had the invocates found me?

When I had come to the stream, I made sure to cover my tracks and there was no way they had my scent after so long. Even still I had ways of masking my scent.

The invocates had been tracking me for days now. Although they would have gone back to the church by now usually, I knew I was a high priority target so they weren’t going to let me go so easily.

Still I was almost completely sure that it would have been impossible for any of them to sneak up on me. Even three stars wouldn’t be able to pull it off with all my precautions.

By all rights I should have relaxed and gone back to bathing.

But by Sol, I had learned to trust my instincts a long time ago. And no matter how ridiculous they may be, I wasn’t going to ignore them.

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 213: ROWENA

“So is this the place?” I asked the guard. He nodded. “Yes… my lady.” He said.It was obvious that he was confused about how to address me. And I had a good idea of why that was the case.I simply smiled at him as I held both my brother and Roman in front of me.“Thank you, we’ll go in and check the place.” I said. The guard nodded. Then he took one last look at us. After that he walked away as if he couldn’t wait to get away from us.“Alright, let’s go in then.” I said as I let go of the boys.“You didn’t have to tell me that.” Oisin said. He seemed a little annoyed. “Why did you try so hard to get us to stay here anyway?” Oisin asked. He was already looking around the settlement, most likely for interesting things to explore. His question reminded me of Morning and Phoenix.Right this moment, they should be having some much needed alone time together.I smiled to myself. “Wouldn’t you want to see an interesting thing develop?” I asked.Oisin rolled his eyes. “What are you

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 212: MORNING

“Yes, I promise.” Phoenix replied immediately without any hesitation. That was enough to reassure me. It wasn’t like I didn’t still have my fears of why I didn’t want to tell him anything, but I was able to draw courage and strength from him. I felt a warmth from where his hands touched mine and it comforted me and made me feel better.I was still deathly scared of his reaction. After all I didn’t want him to go no matter what. That wasn’t even something that I really knew until the moment that it looked like it might happen.Phoenix had almost died in front of me before, and he did all that to save my life. I was devastated back then, but this somehow felt worse. I was that scared of him leaving me. That also brought other feelings like shame into the fore front. But I still had to push past that. Phoenix had made all the effort to reassure me so of course I had to deliver. It was simply best if I didn’t think of what his reaction might end up being.I took a deep breath before

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 211: PHOENIX

I noticed when Morning’s mind started spiraling into itself. Her gaze became distant and her face was grave. She was thinking of dark thoughts.I knew because I had dark thoughts of my own. Dark thoughts that I had never really shared with anyone. It even made me feel like somewhat of a hypocrite because I asked Morning to share her thoughts with me.But then again, it was all because I wasn’t good enough. If I was then who knows how many deaths I could have prevented. Even now, who knew how many the church killed in cold blood. We had saved one pack yes, but what about the others? The church definitely had enough power to attack more than one at a time. So I decided that I didn’t want that for Morning. I just couldn’t stand by and watch while I was well aware that her mind was killing her slowly. So I called Morning. It seemed to actually work, but then she started thinking of something else. It was a little off because the momentum of our constant talking had been broken. But h

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 210: MORNING

“I’m a monster Phoenix.” I quickly said the truth. But Phoenix’s face was only furrowed in confusion. But I couldn’t blame him. A moment ago, I had been talking about how I came to care for Liam within that short amount of time. It wasn’t something I had allowed myself to even think about in awhile, so I was only thinking out loud. But all that was just delay tactics. Because I had gotten to the really horrific part of my story. And I quickly realized something as I stared into Phoenix’s confused face.I was terrified of what his reaction would be.Phoenix was undoubtedly a good man. But he didn’t tolerate evil. I had seen that clearly. How else could he abandon his own people, his own father and even the people he grew up with? He did that all just because he felt what they were doing was wrong. I once thought that he was defending humans when he told me that I shouldn’t hate every single one of them because of what some of them did. But despite that he didn’t show any merc

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 209: PHOENIX

I made sure to talk as little as possible as I listened to Morning talk. This was exactly what I wanted for a long time now, and I was so happy that it was finally happening. Of course, I only showed that by kissing Morning. When I was with her on the bed, I realized just how important this woman was to me. How I was willing to risk my life to save hers, and she was willing to do the same for me. But the feelings went beyond that somehow. When I kissed her this time I felt a sensation that was very difficult to describe or understand. It was like a yearning for her coming from deep within me.But I didn’t want anything to distract or discourage Morning from telling me her story. It was very important to me that she decided to share this with me all on her own.So I listened while remaining as quiet as possible. I made sure to only drop a comment here and there. Sometimes when Morning seemed to be getting to deep in her negative emotions I said a word of two about it. But I still

  • MY SECOND-CHANCE MATE IS A WOLF HUNTER   CHAPTER 208: MORNING

I turned to Phoenix after I said my last words. I half expected him to tell me that I shouldn’t hate humans. About how he was technically also a human and a hunter at that. But instead, Phoenix didn’t react to my words. He silently fidgeted with my injured hand instead.I wondered if he had heard me, but I dismissed the thought. He must have understood me instead of trying to preach.I decided to move on from that topic. He already knew that I hated humans anyway so there was no real reason to dwell on that. That wasn’t even the part of the story that I wanted us to focus on. I cleared my throat as I continued talking.“My father’s heart was broken that day. He had actually been able to rebuff the hunter attack, but the pack had paid a huge price for that. And the price that he paid personally seemed to be even bigger.”“He became something of a recluse since that day, and he actually got a lot more physically weak. It might have been injuries from the fight, but it was just m
