War at the Gates

Drums pounded across the valley like fists on cracked ribs. Lyra stood on the battlements with wind tearing at her mud stained clothes. The army below moved like a black river. Her old pack banners snapped beside northern silver. Rowan rode at the front. Shoulders straight. Face carved from stone. Selene rode beside him. Pale hair whipping like a warning.

Power boiled under Lyra’s skin. It wanted out. It wanted blood. She gripped the stone wall until her knuckles bled white. Silver light flickered across her fingers without permission. A chunk of battlement crumbled under her palm and fell into the void.

Kael stood solid next to her. Armor back on. Sword at his hip. He looked every inch the king who burned kingdoms for breakfast. But his hand brushed her lower back. Once. Brief. Like he knew she might explode and wanted to anchor her.

“They sent the full strength,” he said. Voice low. “Not just rescue. They mean to take this city.”

Lyra swallowed hard. “Rowan does not know how to quit.”

“Neither do I.” Kael turned her to face him. Silver eyes burned. “You still have time to run to him. Last chance.”

The offer hit like a slap. She searched his face for the trap. Found none. Only raw truth. Her wolf snarled at the idea. It did not want the safe mate anymore. It wanted the storm standing in front of her.

“I am not running.” Her voice came out rough. “Not anymore.”

A horn blasted from the approaching lines. Rowan’s voice carried on the wind. Amplified by pack magic. “Give her back Draven. Or we paint your walls red.”

Soldiers around them growled. Weapons drawn. The air stank of coming violence.

Kael stepped to the edge. Voice rolling out deep and calm. “She stays because she chose. Turn back now and I let you live.”

Laughter answered from the valley. Selene’s voice cut sharp. “The rejected whore already spreads her legs for the enemy? Pathetic.”

Rage detonated inside Lyra. Silver light exploded outward. It slammed into the ground below the walls and carved a trench through the dirt. Horses reared. Men shouted. Her knees buckled but Kael caught her before she dropped.

“Easy,” he muttered against her hair. “Save it for when it matters.”

She shoved him off. Chest heaving. “I am not pathetic. I am not theirs.”

The words felt good. True. But the power did not care. It kept leaking. Cracks spidered through the stone at her feet. Guards backed away fast.

Down below Rowan rode closer. Alone. White flag raised but his eyes screamed wolf. “Lyra. Look at me. This is not you.”

She leaned over the wall. Wind stung her face. “You made sure it was not me when you threw me away. Do not come here pretending to save me now.”

Pain flashed across his face. Real. Deep. “I was wrong. I know about the blood. I thought I could protect the pack from what you are. But I see it now. Come home. We will face it together.”

For one heartbeat the old pull tugged at her chest. The memory of his hands teaching her to fight. The almost bond. The safety that almost was.

Then Kael’s presence pressed against her back. Solid. Hot. Dangerous. Her wolf chose. Hard.

“No.” The word fell like an axe. “I am staying. Leave before more wolves die for your guilt.”

Rowan’s face twisted. He looked at Kael. “You touched her and I will rip your throat out.”

Kael smiled. Cold. “Try it.”

Chaos broke.

Arrows flew from both sides. Magic cracked the air. Northern wolves shifted mid charge. Howls split the sky. Lyra’s power lashed out uncontrolled. It caught a group of attackers and flung them backward like leaves in a gale. Some did not get up.

She screamed. Not from fear. From the horror of how good it felt.

Kael roared orders. His soldiers poured from the gates. Steel met fur and fang. Blood sprayed across the ground near the walls. The training yard fight felt like a child’s game now. This was real. This was death singing.

A northern wolf leaped high. Claws aimed at Lyra’s throat from below. She thrust her hands out. Silver light tore from her palms and ripped the wolf apart mid air. Meat and bone rained down.

Lyra dropped to her knees. Vomiting. Shaking. “I did not mean to. Gods I did not mean to.”

Kael hauled her up. Blood on his cheek that was not his. “You did what you had to. Now fight or get inside.”

She chose fight. They stood together on the wall while the battle roared below. Every time her power surged wild Kael took some of it. Let it burn into him. His eyes glowed brighter. His strikes from the wall landed harder. Like they fed each other.

Rowan fought like a demon in the mud. Eyes locked on her the whole time. Selene directed from the rear. Cold. Calculating.

A stray blast of Lyra’s power hit the ground near Rowan. It knocked him off his feet. He rose slower. Staring up at her with something broken in his eyes.

Guilt tore through her chest. But the thing inside her purred. Stronger. Hungrier.

Night fell fast over the slaughter. Horns sounded retreat from the attackers. They pulled back bloody and fewer. Leaving bodies in the dirt.

Kael turned to her. Breathing hard. “You held the line.”

Lyra looked at her hands. Covered in blood and silver glow that would not fade. “I killed them.”

“You lived.” He pulled her close right there on the battlement. Bodies still warm below. His mouth crashed against hers. Hard. Claiming. No permission asked.

She bit his lip. Tasted blood. Kissed him back fiercer. Power flared between them so bright soldiers shielded their eyes. Her wolf howled victory inside her ribs.

When they broke apart she was shaking. “This is madness.”

Kael rested his forehead on hers. “Welcome to my world.”

Far below in the dark Rowan’s howl rose. Lonely. Furious. Promising more pain.

Lyra pressed her face into Kael’s chest. Heart slamming. The enemy king’s arms locked around her like iron and fire.

War had only begun. And the blood in her veins sang for every brutal second of it.

Lyra burned. Not metaphor. Not poetry. Real flames of silver fire licked across her skin without consuming her. The poison from yesterday still lingered in her blood and the Lunar thing punished her for the weakness by tearing her apart from the inside.Kael grabbed her before she could level the entire chamber. He slammed her down on the long black table and shoved her legs open. No patience. No words. He drove into her with one brutal thrust while silver flames crawled over both their bodies. The wood beneath her back blackened and split. She screamed and clawed his chest open. Blood ran hot down her fingers and the power drank it like wine.Every thrust fed the fire. He gripped her ass hard enough to bruise and thrust up to meet her. The broken floor beneath them split wider. Chunks of ceiling crashed down but she did not stop. The throne room still stank of smoke and spilled blood wine. Lyra remained sprawled across Kael’s lap on the obsidian seat. Her thighs straddled him. His cock still buried deep inside her while the last cheers from the hall faded into drunken growls. Silver light pulsed between their joined bodies. Every small shift of her hips sent fresh sparks cracking across the black stone floor. She felt full. Used. Alive. The Lunar blood sang loud in her veins now. No longer fighting her. It wanted this. • Marked by the Alpha, Claimed by the Enemy King    Queen Of Ruin

Lyra stood in the ruined great hall with Rowan’s blood still smoking on the cracked stone where he had landed. Her hands would not stop shaking. Silver light bled from her fingertips and left puddles that hissed against the floor. The palace felt alive now. Angry. Hungry. Just like her.Kael kept one arm locked around her waist. His body heat burned through her thin robe. He had not bothered dressing fully after dragging her back from the yard. Bare chest pressed to her back. Fresh claw marks from her nails still leaking blood down his sides.“You ended him.” His voice rumbled against her ear. Proud. Dark.“I did not kill him.” The words tasted like ash. “He still breathes. I felt it.”Outside the broken doors Selene’s forces dragged Rowan away under heavy cover. Their howls rose weak and furious. Defeated for now but not finished. Never finished.Power surged again without warning. It ripped through Lyra’s spine and exploded outward. The remaining hall windows blew out in a shower of

Lyra could not sleep. The palace felt too small for what raged inside her. Silver light pulsed through her body in waves that matched her heartbeat. Every pulse cracked another tile in the floor. Every breath sent sparks dancing across the ceiling. Kael lay beside her breathing deep but she knew he was awake. His hand rested heavy on her bare stomach like he could hold the chaos down by touch alone.Outside the walls the enemy camp grew louder. More fires. More howls. Rowan refused to leave. Selene fed his rage with whispers Lyra could almost taste on the wind. Her old life calling her back while the new one burned her from the inside. She sat up. Sweat slick on her skin. The sheets stuck to her thighs where Kael had taken her again only hours ago. Marks from his mouth still throbbed on her breasts. Between her legs she felt swollen and used and starving for more. The Lunar blood loved the mess. It drank the guilt and the pleasure and asked for seconds.Kael’s arm tightened. “Stay.”“
