Teeth in the Dark

last update publish date: 2026-05-05 15:33:24

Lyra woke choking on silver light. It poured out of her skin like blood from a fresh wound. The canopy bed shook hard enough to crack the wooden posts. Her nightdress stuck to her body soaked through with sweat. Heart hammering so loud it drowned the last of the rain against the windows.

She sat up fast. Chest heaving. The power did not listen. It whipped around the room in wild spirals. Shattered pieces of the vase from last night lifted off the floor and spun like angry hornets. One sliced her arm. Blood welled hot and immediate.

Kael was already there. He had not slept. Dark circles under those silver eyes but his body stayed coiled tight. Ready.

“Control it,” he barked. Voice rough from the long night.

“I am trying.” The words came out a snarl. Her wolf lunged against her ribs like it wanted to tear free and run wild through the palace.

A chair flipped over. Curtains ripped at the edges. The mirror on the far wall cracked straight down the middle with a sound like breaking bone.

Kael crossed the room in three strides. He grabbed her face with both hands. Thumbs pressing hard into her jaw. “Look at me. Not the power. Me.”

Their eyes locked. His silver against her storm. For one heartbeat the chaos paused. Then it slammed back harder. The light wrapped around both of them. Burning. Pulling. Her wolf howled inside her head and his answered. Deep. Low. Dangerous.

Lyra gasped. The pull felt like hands sliding under her skin. Intimate. Wrong. Perfect. She hated how her body arched toward him. How her lips parted without permission.

“Get out,” she whispered. But her hands fisted in his shirt. Pulling him closer instead.

Kael’s breath hit her mouth. Hot. “You do not want me out.”

He was right. The truth tasted like ash and honey. She shoved him anyway. Power exploded between them and threw him back against the wall. Plaster cracked. He slid down but stayed on his feet. A thin line of blood ran from his nose.

Lyra scrambled off the bed. Legs weak. Head spinning. “I am sorry. I did not mean.”

“Yes you did.” He wiped the blood with the back of his hand. Smiled slow and sharp. “Good. Hit harder next time. Weak power gets you killed.”

Anger flared fresh. She wanted to scream at him. Wanted to kiss him. Wanted to run until her feet bled again. The mix made her dizzy.

A loud knock hammered the outer door.

“My king.” The sharp woman from yesterday. Voice tight. “Council is waiting. They heard the noise. Rumors are spreading through the barracks already.”

Kael did not take his eyes off Lyra. “Tell them I will be there when I am ready.”

“They demand.”

“Then let them choke on it.”

Boots retreated fast. Smart woman.

Lyra pressed her bleeding arm to her stomach. “They hate me already.”

“They fear you.” Kael stepped close again. Tore a strip from the ruined curtain and wrapped it tight around her cut. His fingers brushed her skin too long. Heat pooled low in her belly. Traitor body.

She stepped back. “I need air. Real air. Not this cage.”

“You get the training yard. With me.” He turned for the door. “Dress. We leave in five minutes. Try not to bring the roof down on the way out.”

Lyra wanted to refuse. Instead she moved. The new clothes felt too soft. Too royal. Dark blue tunic. Silver threaded pants that moved like water when she walked. Boots that fit perfect. She hated how right they felt.

They walked the corridors together. Guards fell in behind them but kept distance. Whispers followed like smoke. Eyes watched from every shadow. Her wolf stayed close to the surface. Teeth bared at every stare.

The training yard was mud and blood and steel. Warriors stopped mid fight when they entered. Sweat. Iron. Growls thick in the air. Kael stripped off his outer tunic. Muscles moved under scarred skin. Old wounds. Fresh power burns from her. He looked like war made flesh.

“Attack me,” he said. Simple.

Lyra blinked. “What?”

“Attack. Or the power attacks you instead. Choose.”

Rage and fear twisted together. She lunged. No grace. Just claws and teeth and hurt. Her fist connected with his shoulder. Silver light burst on impact. He took it. Grabbed her wrist and spun her. Back slammed against his chest. Arm locked around her throat. Not choking. Holding.

“Again,” he growled against her ear. Breath hot.

She stomped his foot. Elbowed back. Power flared wild. Ground cracked under them. A nearby weapons rack toppled with a crash. Warriors scattered.

Kael laughed low. Real sound. It vibrated through her spine. “There she is.”

They fought dirty. No rules. She bit his arm when he grabbed her. Drew blood. He pinned her in the mud. Heavy body covering hers. For a second everything stopped. Just their ragged breathing. Mud. Blood. Rain starting again from the gray sky.

Her wolf wanted to roll over. Submit. Claim. Bite back. The chaos inside her loved the weight of him.

Lyra bucked hard. Knees up. Nearly caught him. They rolled. She ended on top. Straddling his hips. Silver light glowing between them like a living rope tying their chests together.

Kael stared up at her. Eyes dark now. Hungry. “You feel it.”

“Shut up.” Her voice cracked.

His hands settled on her thighs. Firm. Possessive. “This is what they are afraid of. Not just the blood. What it wakes up between us.”

She leaned down before she could stop herself. Lips almost brushing his. Then she shoved off. Stood on shaky legs. Mud caked her new clothes. Good.

A horn blasted from the walls. Urgent. Not practice.

Kael rose. Face hard again. “Scouts.”

They ran to the battlements. Wind whipped cold. From the ridge she saw it. Dust on the horizon. Banners. Wolves moving fast.

Her old pack colors mixed with northern silver.

Rowan. Selene. Coming for her.

Kael stood beside her. Shoulder touching hers. “They moved quicker than I thought.”

Lyra’s stomach dropped. Power stirred again. Violent. Ready. “What now?”

He looked at her. No mask. “Now you decide if you still belong to the past. Or if you burn it down with me.”

Her cut arm throbbed. Lips still remembered how close she came to kissing the enemy king. Her wolf howled for blood and choice and chaos.

Down below the army prepared. Steel sang. Drums beat.

War had arrived at the gates.

And Lyra stood in the middle. Marked. Claimed. And starving for what came next.

Silver light bled from her fingertips and left puddles that hissed against the floor. The palace felt alive now. Angry. Hungry. Just like her.Kael kept one arm locked around her waist. His body heat burned through her thin robe. He had not bothered dressing fully after dragging her back from the yard. Bare chest pressed to her back. Fresh claw marks from her nails still leaking blood down his sides.“You ended him.” His voice rumbled against her ear. Proud. Dark.“I did not kill him.” The words tasted like ash. “He still breathes. I felt it.”Outside the broken doors Selene’s forces dragged Rowan away under heavy cover. Their howls rose weak and furious. Defeated for now but not finished. Never finished.Power surged again without warning. It ripped through Lyra’s spine and exploded outward. The remaining hall windows blew out in a shower of
