I had always heard that trust was fragile, but for the first time, I knew how betrayal felt.

I thought Lucien was my friend, someone who would always be on my side, but I was wrong.

I was walking out of the college building when a familiar face appeared, waiting for me near the exit.

He opened his mouth to say something, but I walked past him without glancing in his direction.

"Celeste...." I heard Lucien's voice, but it was not the same, he seemed tired.

I chose to ignore him.

He didn't

  • Marked by the Moon   44. Something was happening around me

My mind was a mess. My thoughts were scattered. I couldn't stop thinking about the woman I saw in the lake. Who was she? Why did the lake show me her image? The thoughts had been haunting me, no matter how much I tried to get rid of them. I knew one thing, all my questions would be answered at one place only. But how could I go there?Would it be wrong? The questions were testing my patience and sanity. I stood in front of my window, staring at the forest in front of me. For some reason, a part of me wanted to run into the forest and search for my answers but another part of me knew, my answers were somehwere else. "Fuck this," I yelled the words loudly, before storming out of my bedroom. I took the car keys, I didn't like to drive but my focus was on something else. The sky remained clear blue over my head, there were no clouds, unlike the situation inside my head. Kai had been checking up on me constantly, but how could I share all of my issues with him when he didn't know

  • Marked by the Moon   43. A missing part of my life

My world had flipped upside down after learning the truth. Of course, I was grateful to be a part of this family. But a small part of me wanted to know more about my other parents. What happened to them? How did they die? How did I survive the fire? But no matter how much I wanted to know the truth, I had no way of knowing about it. I asked my mother in the morning about the place where she found me or where my parents died, but she said it would be best if I stopped running behind the answers that would just make me more curious...and eventually hurt me.Because, according to her, no matter what, I found the answer would not be in my favour. Running behind shadows could only lead to a path of darkness. But it was a missing part of my life. And, when I asked her if anyone else had survived the fire, her response was even more brutal. The fire wiped out the entire neighborhood. There were no survivors.... except for me.A heaviness settled in my heart. My phone started ringing

  • Marked by the Moon   42. I will do anything to protect my family

Kai went home without uttering a word about what he had witnessed. For someone who just survived getting murdered, he was behaving pretty chill. I was done being in the dark, if I wanted answers, I had to start finding them on my own. I was on the call with Kai. Strangely, he was the one reassuring me and saying it would be fine and we could talk about everything later. But it was my Kai, unpredictable. Once I was sure he was fine, I had another thing to take care of.And I knew from where I should start. "Mom," I called her. She put the tea cup on the table and looked at me through her reading glasses, "Yes, dear."Mom would always sit near the window after dinner and enjoy a cup of her favourite tea while reading a book.I hesitated. "Are you alright?" she asked when I didn't respond. "Can I talk to you?" "Of course, come sit with me," she closed the book that was in her hands and removed her glasses. I sat down next to her. I was not the only one who had been acting weird

  • Marked by the Moon   41. You are my Watson

"Are we going to talk about what happened?"It was the first sentence he had said that was directed towards me. Ever since we came back from college, he had been walking inside the room continuously while blabbering words that no human could understand. But what was I supposed to tell him? There were no words that could comfort the storm brewing inside his head. "I think it's best if you just forget about it," I tried, even though I knew those were the worst possible words I could have said. Kai stopped walking and turned to face me.There was no humour on his face. He looked like a lost puppy, and I knew how he felt because I had been feeling the same lately. We came to my house after returning from the campus, my parents were in a meeting with Kai's parents and a few others from the neighborhood. "This is not a horror movie, I can't just forget about it," he argued. "Would you at least stop walking, you are making me dizzy," I asked as he started walking again. "Pardon me

  • Marked by the Moon   40. Tell me, I didn't see that

My mind was a mess. I felt like I didn't know anything. I couldn't trust my shadow. The burning sensation in my mark was back as well. From the past, I knew it was not a good sign. I held the mark tightly with my other hand and closed my eyes. I was sitting alone in the library. The 2 other people who were studying earlier left almost 30 minutes ago. There was silence, a deafening silence. I focused on the sound of the large, ancient-looking clock hanging on the wall. Then, the ticking of the clock started getting quieter. I didn't pay much attention to it and kept my eyes closed. Soon, the whispers returned. Just like before, it started with many voices until only her voice was left among them. "Find the truth."The red-eyed girl was staring at me. She was carrying the same distressed emotions. She opened her mouth to say something else, but I opened my eyes. I looked around, and I was still alone, but 15 minutes had passed. I grabbed my stuff and walked out of the li

  • Marked by the Moon   39. What made him walk away?

Ever since Kai made the recent discovery, I couldn't help but be more paranoid. And to make it worse, I was not able to find any new spot to start training again. "What's going on with you?""What?" I asked Kai. We were walking towards his car after having coffee in the evening."You've been staring at your phone for the last 5 minutes.""I was...texting," I lied. "Technology is not that advanced yet," he raised his brow, and stopped almost 2 steps away from the car.I stopped as well and looked at the black screen of my phone. I opened my mouth to say something, but froze when I felt something different around me. "Celeste," a cold voice called my name. I gasped, and a similar reaction came from Kai. Seraphine was standing behind Kai. He turned around, holding his heart. "Where did you come from?" he asked.Seraphine looked at me with the same bored expression she always carried, "I want to talk.""You know her?" Kai questioned again. I didn't respond immediately."I don't k

  • Marked by the Moon   26. What are you?

I woke up with an empty feeling. I scanned the room and realised I was now alone. There was no sign of Lucien. Lazily, I got out of bed and started walking towards the bathroom but froze the minute my hand touched the cold door knob, the memories kept rushing back. Inhaling a deep breath and pr

  • Marked by the Moon   23. Fear makes it worse

I couldn't sleep. Not because of nightmares or whispers or burning sensation on my mark. How was I supposed to control something I didn't understand? Kai didn't leave me alone, although our conversations were not flowing like they used to. My eyes kept searching for a pair of black eyes the ent

  • Marked by the Moon   22. You always have a choice

With the blink of an eye, Lucien was standing in front of me. I stood up as well, maintaining some distance from the woman. Her eyes held a different type of spark, she moved her gaze lazily from the water towards me. “Earlier than expected.”"Don't," Lucien warned, hiding me half behind himself

  • Marked by the Moon   21. You're safe here

"You don't want to answer this? Fine, tell me what just happened?" Kai pointed towards the fountain. I pushed some hair behind my ear, "I don't know, old pipes burst like that all the time."Kai let out a laugh, but it was not a real one, "No, they don't explode like that."We were near the main g
