Briony's POV

Kieran came back near midnight, boots caked in mud from the border trail, jaw tight enough that I knew before he said a word that whatever he found out there hadn't settled anything.

"Well?" I stood up from the chair I'd been waiting in, too keyed up to have actually slept.

"Multiple sets of tracks. Days' worth, maybe longer." He dropped into the chair across from me, rubbing a hand over his face. "Whoever came through that window last night wasn't the first one scouting that stretch of wall. They've been watching us for a while."

"And Halric? What did he say before you got pulled away?"

Something shifted in his expression, careful now. "He wrote the treaty clause himself. Forty years back. Pushed the council to leave it open to any Thistlewood daughter instead of naming one specifically."

My stomach dropped. "He knew. About the bloodline."

"Suspected. That's the word he used." Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Said he'd been watching your family for decades, waiting to see if it surfaced again. Then he started talking about a woman. Somebody from before my father's time. Said he knew things about her family nobody else in the pack ever learned, and that he kept it to himself for forty years because he didn't think it was his secret to give away."

"What kind of things?"

"I don't know. That's when the tracker interrupted, right as he was about to say it." Frustration bled into his voice. "He had the whole thing sitting right there. I watched him decide to say it. And then it was gone."

I sat back down slowly, mind racing through everything we knew, trying to find the shape underneath it the way I try to find the source of an infection under skin that looked fine on the surface. "So it's not just about the bloodline existing. It's personal for him somehow."

"Sounds that way."

"A woman he knew, from before your father's time." I turned it over out loud, thinking as I spoke. "That's old, Kieran. Older than the last time Blackfen and Ashvale had any real trouble, from what I understand the pack's history."

"You think it connects to Blackfen?"

"I think it's a strange coincidence if it doesn't. Halric wrote a clause forty years ago protecting a bloodline he suspects might carry something rare. Now Blackfen's sending armed men through my window to take me." I met his eyes. "That's not two separate stories. That's one story we're only getting half of."

Kieran was quiet for a moment, turning something over behind his eyes. "There's another piece that doesn't fit right either. Petra."

"What about her?"

"How would a pack warrior with no connections outside Ashvale end up passing notes to Blackfen soldiers in the first place? That's not something you stumble into. Somebody had to reach her first. Recruit her. Which means whoever's running this had eyes inside my pack long before last week."

The thought settled cold in my chest. "You think Halric's secret and Petra's betrayal are connected too."

"I don't know what I think anymore." He scrubbed a hand through his hair, frustration written plain across his face. "I've run this pack for six years and in the last two weeks I've learned there's a woman from Halric's past nobody ever mentioned, a bloodline the elders quietly tracked for decades, and a warrior selling secrets to the exact pack that bloodline apparently matters to. None of it's random. It's all one thread, and I can't see where it starts."

"Maybe it starts with whoever Halric was talking about."

"Maybe." He looked at me then, something steadier in his face despite everything. "You're good at this, you know. Pulling pieces together like a puzzle instead of panicking over each one separately."

"Comes from years of diagnosing wounds nobody else could figure out. Same instinct, different subject." I almost smiled. "Symptoms don't lie even when people do."

"I should bring you into more of this. Council matters, not just what directly touches you." He said it like it cost him something to admit, old habits of keeping things locked down clashing with whatever this was between us now. "You see angles I miss."

"I'd like that." I meant it more than the simple words let on.

For a moment the room felt almost easy, the two of us leaning toward whatever this next step was going to be, tired but working the same problem side by side instead of around each other.

A knock cut through it, quick and urgent.

"Alpha." A scout's voice, out of breath, through the door. "Sorry, you'll want to hear this straight away."

Kieran was up and across the room before I finished standing. He pulled the door open, and the scout nearly stumbled through it, chest heaving like he'd run the whole way from the border without stopping.

"What is it?" Kieran's voice had gone hard, braced for the worst.

"Marisol." The scout swallowed, forcing the words out between breaths. "She's alive, Alpha. One of the watch spotted her, clear as day, at the Blackfen border crossing. Walking. Unescorted. Nobody dragging her, nobody holding her."

The room went silent around me. I heard my own heartbeat before I heard anything else.

"She's alive," I repeated, the words not quite landing right in my chest. "And she's at the Blackfen border. On her own."

The scout nodded, still catching his breath, and none of us said the thing hanging heaviest in the room, that a woman who vanished the night before her own wedding, now walking free and unguarded straight into the territory of the pack hunting Briony. Marisol wasn't running from anything at all.

She ran straight to it.

Kieran's POVHalric led me to his own quarters instead of the war room, which told me something before he even opened his mouth. He shut the door behind us and checked the hallway twice through the gap before he trusted it closed."You're making me nervous," I said."Good." He didn't sit. Paced instead, hands clasped behind his back, an old habit I have seen him do maybe three times in my life, all of them before delivering news he didn't want to deliver. "Because what I'm about to tell you should've come out a long time ago, and I've spent years telling myself it didn't matter. Last night proved me wrong.""Then tell me."He stopped pacing and looked at me straight on. "The treaty clause. The one demanding a Thistlewood daughter for the binding. I wrote that wording myself, forty years back, when I sat on the council that first drafted it."That stopped me cold. "You never mentioned that.""Because it wasn't something I was proud of admitting." His jaw worked. "The clause wasn't pack

Briony's POVBy morning I had four guards instead of one, stationed at my door, my window, and both ends of the hallway, and I hated every single one of them on principle even though none of it was their fault."This is ridiculous," I said, watching a fifth wolf get added to the rotation outside the healing house. "I can't walk to the well without an escort now.""You can't walk anywhere without an escort now." Kieran didn't look up from the notes he was reading, spread out across the war room table like they might rearrange themselves into an answer if he stared long enough. "Not after last night.""I threw a fully grown man through a window with my bare hands. I think I can handle a walk to the well.""You barely stayed on your feet doing it." He finally looked up. "You told me yourself. It didn't feel like healing. You don't know what it costs you yet, and neither do I, and I'm not betting your life on a power neither of us understands against wolves who came here specifically to t

Briony's POVI lay frozen, staring at the window, listening to that scrape work its way slower and more careful than any wind or branch could manage. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my ears. The latch gave with a soft click. The window slid open an inch, then wider, cold air pouring in around a shape pulling itself over the sill, black-clothed, face covered, moving with the kind of quiet that only comes from practice. I didn't think. I didn't have time to think. My body just reacted, rolling off the far side of the bed as his boots hit the floor."Where is she…" His voice cut off the second he spotted me crouched against the wall.He lunged.I threw my hands up, not to fight, just to stop him, some desperate animal instinct screaming got back away from me and the mark on my palm exploded to life so fast it lit the whole room gold. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't the warm pull I felt healing Faro. This was raw, ugly force, a wall of pressure slamming into him mid-lunge and th

Briony's POV"Whose scent is it?" I asked, my voice lower than I meant it to come out.Kieran straightened, still staring at the doorframe like it might give him more if he looked hard enough. "Not fresh. A few hours old, maybe more. Faint enough that if I hadn't been standing right here I would've missed it completely.""But you know whose it is."His jaw ticked. "I have a guess.""Petra.""I said a guess." He said it fast, like he wanted to hold off naming her out loud until he was sure, but I could see it in his face, he already knew. "Get inside. Bolt the door. I'll send someone to sit outside your window tonight.""I don't need a babysitter.""You need somebody who isn't asleep when the next note gets passed." He didn't wait for me to argue further, already moving down the hall, the tracker jogging to keep pace with him.I went inside like he told me to. I bolted the door like he told me to. I did not, however, plan on staying quiet about any of it, and the second I heard his boo

Briony's POVI found Kieran in the war room going over patrol maps with two of his trackers, and I didn't wait for an invitation to interrupt."Petra passed a note to a man at the border market. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like anybody I've smelled before, actually."The trackers went still. Kieran's head came up slowly."Describe him.""Tall. Dark coat, no colors on him. Kept his face turned away from the crowd most of the time." I crossed my arms. "He took the note and disappeared before I could get a good look.""And Petra?""Told me I was imagining things. Then told me to be careful who I said that to."Kieran's jaw worked once. He turned to the older tracker, rattled off three names and a stretch of border to cover before nightfall, and the two men were gone within a minute, boots already moving down the hall."You should've come straight to me instead of confronting her," he said, once they were gone."I didn't confront her. She confronted me.""Same difference, i
