Chapter 2

2 weeks earlier

Sophie Pov

The sound of the door opening woke me up. I sit up on my bed, yawning. I walk to my bedroom door, opening it. It was my sister, Anna. She looked at me with a scorn. I don’t know why she can never look at me like a proper human being.

“Yes, how can I help you?” I asked.

“Mum and dad want to speak to us. Go dress up and come to the office in 10 minutes’’ she said, not waiting for my response. After closing my door, I ran to my bathroom. I do not want to get in trouble with my parents, it will end badly for me. I wonder what they want to talk about, that includes me. They do a lot of meetings without me. It’s not like they care about me or are actually nice enough to include me in their conversations.

I am the outcast of the family, the abandoned sister. While Anna is the lovely daughter. After brushing my teeth, I took a bath. Entering my closet I wore a blue trouser and a white shirt. I know my parents don’t like me like they love Anna and they don’t care about me or my dreams. Anna always gets the best things. Best clothes, shoes, dull houses, rooms. Everything she wanted, they gave her, no question asked. I was not happy growing up knowing my parents will always prefer her more, but now I am comfortable with it, cause after all what can I do? I can only focus on myself only.

After wearing my clothes, I ran to dad’s office. If mom was to see me running, she would freak. She is the type that loves wearing dresses and stilettos; she loves being classy and never to be caught looking rough or dirty. Maybe that’s why she and Anna are literally best friends because they have the exact same character. They are both bitchy and annoying. I have always been a messy child, we all know that, but mother always calls me out on it. She never gets tired of calling me out of my bad habits. I knocked on the door.

“Come in” that was father. I entered and closed the door. Dad was sitting on his chair, in front of the table, while mom and Anna sat together on the couch.

“Good morning,” I said, sitting on a single chair. Anna scoffs. What is her problem now? I thought, rolling my eyes.

“Sophie, can’t you at least wear a dress?” Mom said, looking at my clothes in disgust. She always has problems with my choice of clothing. I like wearing things that make me comfortable. We all know that but she always complain about my dressing, not that I ever listen to her, but she keeps on complaining. I don’t know if she wants me to be like her and Anna that always wear dresses. I bet they wear them to sleep.

“No mom, this is quite comfortable” I said, making the both of them scoff. I rolled my eyes.

“I have good news,” dad said, removing his glasses. I turned to him, curious.

“One of you is getting married,” he said. I looked at him confused. How is that good news? And who is getting married? I don’t get it.

“Dad, what do you mean by one of you is getting married?” Anna asks, equally confused.

“Well, we all know that the Lee company is 2% away from going bankrupt. We do not have the funds to keep it standing, so I went to the Anderson Corp to make a deal. But the old Anderson, Patrick, suggested a deal. He said he is looking for a wife for his grandson Everett and he would like to propose the idea to me. He will help with the funds of the Lee company as far as one of my daughters can marry his grandson. Now I do not know how he knows about Sophie, but he is coming here tomorrow to choose one of you for his grandson. I want you two to go shopping and buy beautiful dresses to impress the old man. One of you must marry Everett, ‘’ he said sternly. I gasp shocked, why will he do that? Well, I can’t get married to a stranger.

“Everett, like Everett Anderson,” Anna asked, looking at dad anxiously.

“Yes, Everett Anderson” he said. Anna gasps happily. Oh, it’s her crush. She is totally in love with Everett. He is her crush, she has posters of him in her bedroom, her wallpaper is his picture. She is totally obsessed with him, a very unhealthy obsession, she literally stalks him. I hear her and mother talking about him and mother always supports her to stalk him. They are both crazy, I tell you.

“Umm dad, we all know Anna loves Everett. Why doesn’t she just marry him?” I said. Mother and Anna nod along with what I said.

“The old Anderson wants to see my daughters first before picking. We have no say,” dad said.

“You can’t talk to him?” mother asked.

“No, I can’t,” he replied. Mother looked disappointed. Anna suddenly squeals, standing up in happiness. “Mother, let’s go for shopping right away,” she said, dragging mother by her arm. They both left the office.

“Aren’t you going to go shopping?” dad asked, looking at me curiously.

“No, I don’t need to shop. I have clothes I can wear, it’s just a waste of money,” I said. I don’t know if dad smiled or what not but I saw something like a smile, but I just ignored it.

“Okay nice, if you need anything I’m right here,” he said. That was weird. He never asked me if I need something. But there was nothing I need.

“Okay” I said. He nod his head and went back to whatever he was doing before. I sigh, resting on the chair. Whatever happens tomorrow, I pray the old man doesn’t pick me. I don’t need any man in my life right now. But oh, how wrong was I.
