Adrain's POV

By evening the house had a different feel.

My mother was more energetic than that morning. She demanded putting on one of her dinner gowns instead of a comfortable dress. She even had the stylist come up to her and make her hair.

“You do not have to impress anybody,” I said to her and adjusted my cufflinks.

“I am not impressing anybody,“ she replied. "I am trying to make a good impression on my future in laws.”

I didn't argue.

“You are making too big a fuss of it,” I said, observing the staff put the gift boxes into the car.

“It is good manners,” I replied. "We are discussing marriage. These things matter."

The ride to the Whitmore house was a thirty-minute one. Their home was in an aged and affluent area of the city. Large gates. Long driveway. Perfectly trimmed hedges.

Upon arrival, the door was opened by a staff in the house.

Margaret Whitmore came to us smiling broadly.

“Eleanor,” my mother to her,"You look wonderful."

"So do you," my mother replied.

Margaret turned to me. "Adrian, it's been too long."

"Mrs. Whitmore," I said politely, as I took her hand and placed a kiss on it.

"Please, call me Margaret. Come in.” She said, leading the way.

We moved into the living room. Traditional furniture. The wall has framed family photographs.

A few minutes later Cassandra descended the stairs.

She looked composed. Calm. That same soft smile.

"Adrian," she said.

"Cassandra."

Our parents at once began to talk.

Margaret listened attentively whilst my mother started her speech.

“You know,” my mother said with a smile, “Margaret and I have been friends more than thirty years.”

The smile on Cassandra grew tight. I kept my expression neutral.

Margaret added, "We used to jokingly say that we were going to be family.”

“Now we think the moment has come,” my mother went on.

She did not wait further to add that this union would not only make us happy as individuals but also make the businesses of our families stronger.

There it was. The practical side.

Margaret nodded. “Our companies would be able to help one another. It would stabilize some of the projects.”

I noticed Cassandra attentively.

She looked relaxed. Too relaxed.

My mother looked satisfied.

A few additional minutes of pleasant talk saw Margaret give a slight clap. “Why not leave them speak a little alone?”

My mother assented at once.

Cassandra pointed to a smaller sitting area which was close to the window. I followed her.

There was a heavy silence between us.

“You look good,” she said at length.

"So do you."

Another silence.

“You’re bi?” She asked.

“Yes,” I replied calmly even though the question caught me off guard.

“Hm.” She said and we went into another round of silence.

I studied her face carefully. She didn't look nervous. Neither did she look excited.

She looked... detached.

My eyes went to her hand, it was still there.

“It is a pretty ring,” I said carelessly.

Her face looked extremely pale, like she had been caught doing something wrong. “A gift.”

She didn't elaborate. I didn't push.

“My stepbrother will be coming to dine with us,” she said, changing the topic . "He just got back into town."

“I was not aware that you had a stepbrother.” I replied.

"He's not around much." Came her short reply.

There was another embarrassing silence between us.

This was unbearable.

"We should head inside," I said. "No need to keep them waiting."

She smiled and nodded almost in relief. "Yes, let's."

Together, we walked into the living room.

“Done already?” My mother asked and Cassandra replied.

"Thats good, Julian will be back soon.” Margaret said. “Let’s head to the dinning room, he will meet us there.”

Julian.

I was struck oddly by the name, but I disregarded it.

I held my mom’s hand as we walked to the dinning room.

There were footsteps along the corridor behind us.

“Future uncle coming through,” said a voice and immediately I heard Cassandra groan.

I felt my chest tightening against the sound of it.

I turned slowly.

And then I saw him.

Messy black hair. Grey eyes. The very same face that was there in the hotel room a few hours back.

Julian.

The young man I had left in bed that morning.

Looking directly at me.

That was when I realized--

The stranger which I had a one-night stand with...

Was her stepbrother.

Adrain’s POV“You!” I exclaimed.“You two know each other?” Cassandra asked.“Yeah,” Julian nonchalantly replied. “We met at a bar.” I clenched my jaw, desperately praying he stops talking.“I had no idea you go to bars.” My mother chided.“I-“ just then the sound of my phone buzzing dragged me out of the memory lane.I opened my phone and it was my mother spamming me photos. Wedding venues. Grand ballrooms. Private estates. Beachfront properties. She had also sent tuxedo designs of three designers. She had been extra naggy after that awkward dinner at Cassandra’s six weeks ago."Pick one," she had texted. "We need to confirm bookings."The wedding was in a few weeks.Everything was going too quick.I browsed another image of a white marble hall with crystal chandeliers. I could visualize myself standing there with Cassandra and the flashing cameras and investors gawking and the headlines telling the world about the merging of two strong families.I felt nothing. My stomach twisted

  • Married to the lie, Pregnant with the truth    The ring

Adrain's POV I awoke with a splitting headache that made me wish I had avoided all the drinks of the previous night. For a few seconds, I didn't move. I looked at the new ceiling and tried to recall where I was. Memory came back too fast. The bar. The teasing. His hand in mine. The hotel room. Julian. I turned my head slightly. He slept, with one arm across the bed, his hair and his pillow being in a mess. When he was not smirking he looked younger. I got on my elbow with as little disturbance as possible. My garments were lying about the floor. I had a few unread notifications on the phone lying on the bedside table. I rubbed my forehead. What did I do? I had accepted marriage to Cassandra a few hours ago. Then I turned around and slept with a stranger. I looked at Julian again. He turned a little, but did not wake up. I did not wish to be here when he wakes up . I didn't want explanations. I did not want him to ask me to give him my number or attempt to make it more tha

  • Married to the lie, Pregnant with the truth    The Night I stopped thinking

Adrain's POVAt that exact second, Dr Rowan walked in.“Mrs Vale must have a rest,” he said, holding up an injection. My mother smiled as he injected her. The little sting nothing compared to the joy of having her life long wish getting granted. “I will come back tomorrow morning,” I said to her, placing a kiss on bed forehead. She gave me a bright smile. "Don't be late.""I won't."I moved aside as the nurse changed her IV. I stood and watched them work for some time. She fell asleep shortly after. “Care of her,” I said to Dr. Rowan."We will."I nodded once and left. I didn't go back to the office. Rather I went to my own apartment downtown. It was quiet there. No staff. No board members. No family pictures looking out at me on the walls. But the door was opened when I got there. My best friend Lucas was there. He had a key. He was the only one who did. He was sitting on the couch with a loose tie and rolled up sleeves. He looked exhausted.“You look like hell,” he said the seco

  • Married to the lie, Pregnant with the truth    The Promise

Adrain's POV “What is it!” I mumbled under my breath, as my phone vibrated in my pocket for the third time in the last few minutes. I usually ensure that I silence all calls when in meetings, and only a few people were able to bypass the DND feature on my phone.“Excuse me.” I said as I brought my phone out of my pocket. It was Doctor Rowan, my mother's doctor. I frowned at the screen. That morning, my mother had gone for her check up. I had dropped her at the hospital to ensure she does not come up with an excuse to avoid it.“I have to take this,” I remarked, and stood up.The directors nodded their heads. I walked out of the meeting room and responded. “Hello, doctor Rowan, what happened? How is my mother?”“Good day Mr Adrian. “I hate to inform you but your mother has been admitted. “ Doctor Rowan said. My stomach tightened. "Admitted? She was there for a checkup. Whats wrong with her?”There was a short pause. “It would be better to talk about it in person.” Doctor Rowan rep
