The next morning, Saint was already dressed and waiting by the car when Nicolas emerged from the penthouse with a grim expression.

"You told me everything last night," Nicolas said, sliding into the driver's seat. "So where exactly are we headed first?"

"Newton road."

"Okay, great. We would need to pick someone up on the way then." Nicolas said, fastening his seatbelt.

"Who?"

"Just a random dude. His car I assigned to him developed a fault this morning so I would prefer to jus

Simon could barely remember how they got to the hospital. One moment, he was on the ground with Mike in his arms, desperately trying to stop the blood flowing from his body. The next, he was behind the wheel, driving as fast as he could while repeatedly glancing at the passenger seat. Mike was barely conscious. His head rested against the seat, his breathing shallow and uneven. Blood stained his clothes, his hands and the seat beneath him. Simon had pressed a piece of fabric against one of the wounds, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to convince himself that he was doing anything useful at all. "Mike?"There was still no response. "Mike, stay with me. We are almost at the hospital."He tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his eyes darting towards the young man beside him multiple times. Mike's eyelids fluttered, but he did not speak. Simon swallowed hard. His hands were trembling so badly that he had to force himself to keep them steady. He had called Rebecca

For several seconds, Mike didn't know what to say. He licked his lips briefly and then held Simon's hand. "I am sorry you had to go through that experience."Simon nodded, accepting the words. "For years, I blamed myself. I knew I was just a child, but I couldn't stop thinking that my mother would still be alive if she hadn't gone back for me. I used to wonder whether my father would have survived too if he hadn't followed her." His lips tightened briefly. "Rebecca was all I had left. I had to grow up quickly because there was nobody else to take care of us. I couldn't afford to fall apart, so I just kept going. I think that's why I have always been so protective of Rebecca. She's my only immediate family left, and I don't think I could handle losing her too." Mike nodded slowly. "And vice versa. I don't think she also wants to lose you. How did you get into the police department?" "I saw the call for it randomly. I had to drop out of school and apply for the academy.

Mike arrived at the restaurant a few minutes before the time Simon had given him. He had spent an unreasonable amount of time deciding what to wear, eventually settling for a fitted black shirt, dark trousers and a wristwatch Nicolas had bought him some months ago. He checked his reflection on his phone screen for the third time before looking towards the entrance. When Simon eventually walked in, Mike's face brightened. "I thought you might have changed your mind." Mike said. "Can I?" Simon replied jokingly, pointing at the entrance as if insinuating that he was going back. Mike quickly grabbed him while smiling. "Don't be cruel to me, Inspector. Besides, you look good tonight but..." he moved himself closer and whispered into his ears. "...you look even better with no clothes on."Simon shook his head. "You are impossible." Mike pulled the chair out and Simon took his seat first, laughing. The evening slowly unfolded. They ordered their meals, exchanged stories about th

The prison corridor smelled of damp concrete, disinfectant and stale air. Mike followed the officer assigned to escort him, his hands tucked into the pockets of his trousers as they approached the visitation area. He had not been particularly eager to make this visit. In fact, he had spent several days debating whether it was worth seeing his father at all. But he was bothered about leaving things unsaid between the both of them. He wanted to look the man in the eyes and tell him exactly what he thought. The officer stopped in front of a small visitation room and opened the door. "He is waiting."Mike nodded and stepped inside. When he did, he could barely recognise the man sitting on the other side of the table. Gideon looked considerably older than Mike remembered. His hair was unkempt, his beard had grown into a rough, uneven mess, and his prison clothes hung loosely around his frame. His eyes moved restlessly around the room, as though he were constantly searching for somet

The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, gradually illuminating the modest bedroom. Outside, the neighbourhood was beginning to stir with the distant sounds of vehicles and early morning activities. Saint was already awake. He lay on his back, staring blankly at the ceiling. He had barely slept through the night, and even when exhaustion eventually pulled him under, his rest had been interrupted by memories he so desperately wanted to escape. Nicolas's face. His voice. The hurt in his eyes. Saint shut his eyes tightly and exhaled. It had been several days since he left the penthouse, yet the distance had done very little to ease the ache in his chest. If anything, it had given him more time to think, and thinking was becoming an increasingly unpleasant experience. He eventually pushed himself upright and rubbed his face with both hands. His eyes were bloodshot, his features visibly tired. The usual sharpness that accompanied his appearance seemed to have disappeare

A few minutes later, Simon stood outside the commander's door and knocked. "Come in."He entered to find Reyes seated behind his desk, looking through a collection of documents. The commander glanced up, his expression changing slightly when he recognised his visitor. "Inspector Simon, what can I do for you?" "I need Arthur Vance's phone."Reyes leaned back in his chair. "His phone?" "Yes sir. He told me it was with you. We need to examine his recent calls, messages and contacts. It could provide information about the people he's been communicating with." Reyes regarded him for a moment before reaching towards a drawer. "Right. I believe I have it here."He opened the drawer, retrieved a smartphone and placed it on the desk. "Here you go."Simon was stunned, seeing that the man gave it out willingly. He looked at the device before reaching for it. "Thank you, sir." "Make sure you handle it properly. We don't want any mistakes with evidence." Reyes said,
