Chapter 4

Author: Juno
Silence fell over the room like a tomb. My heart died in that very second.

On the day my father died—the day Julian claimed he was on a "classified mission" and Chloe claimed she was bedridden with a "severe flu"—they had been in the same bed all along. My desperate cries for help over the phone had been nothing more than background music for their sex. Julian hadn’t even shown his face at my father’s funeral.

Afterward, as I was tortured day and night by the grief of losing him, Julian had held me in his arms, whispering sweet lies. "It’s okay, Elara. Your father has become the brightest star in the sky, watching over you. I’ll take his place and protect you forever."

The truth was this filthy.

A flash of panic crossed Julian’s face. He reached out to me. "I’m sorry, Elara. I..." "I was just worked up. I didn't mean it."

I bit my lip so hard the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. Like a woman possessed, I began smashing everything in the room—including our framed wedding photos.

"Get out!"

Glass shattered everywhere, creating a jagged, bloody boundary between us. Chloe tried to step toward me, but I hurled a jewelry box that struck her right in the forehead.

"Ah!" she screamed, clutching her face.

The last shred of guilt in Julian’s eyes vanished. He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist and wrenching the object from my hand, throwing it to the floor. The photo album burst open, scattering pictures across the hardwood.

There was the photo of the day Julian proposed, kneeling and swearing to give me the best life possible. There was the day I first introduced him to Chloe, the day the three of us officially became a trio. And there was my last birthday, where they sat on either side of me, smiling as I made a wish.

"Elara, what did you wish for?" "I wish for the three of us to stay together forever and never be apart."

Julian stared at those photos, his grip on my wrist loosening slightly. He opened his mouth to speak, but Chloe beat him to it.

"Julian, my head... it hurts so much. Blood! I’m bleeding!"

Julian looked up, stepped right over our memories—literally trampling the photos—and rushed to Chloe’s side. Her forehead was gashed, blood seeping through her fingers. Julian swept her up into his arms and headed for the door without a second thought. At the threshold, he paused for a split second, but he never looked back.

"Regardless of what happened, she was your best friend. You shouldn't have hurt her like this. She’s already suffered enough for this relationship."

With that, he vanished from my sight.

Suffered?

We grew up together. I knew her family was poor, so I shared everything with her. The best cuts of meat, the new dresses my father bought me—I even gave her half my allowance. And now, was I supposed to just hand over the man I’d loved for eight years, too?

I collapsed onto the floor, my tears finally run dry, staring blankly at the broken glass.

Late that night, Chloe called. Her voice was slurred with alcohol. "Elara, I really didn't mean for this to happen. Can you please forgive me? I don't want to lose you as a friend... We grew up together. I don't want a man to come between us." She was sobbing hysterically on the other end.

Then, a bartender took the phone. "Ma'am, we’re closing. If you don't come get her, I’m going to have to toss this drunk out on the sidewalk."

I sat in silence for a long time before finally grabbing my coat. Before her parents died, I had promised them I would look after her. I would fulfill that promise one last time.

When I reached the alleyway behind the bar, I saw Chloe pinned against the wall by Julian. He was kissing her with a desperate, raw intensity.

"Chloe, how many more times are you going to push me away?" Julian’s voice was low and gravelly. "You know damn well you’re the one I love. Why do you keep rejecting me for her?"

Chloe pushed him back, her eyes red. "But Elara is my best friend! I can't steal her happiness!"

"What about your happiness?" Julian gripped her shoulders, questioning her with agonizing frustration.

In that moment, their long-suppressed passion finally exploded. Chloe threw herself into Julian’s arms, clinging to him. "I love you too, Julian... but what about Elara? What do we do..."

Through her sobbing gasps, I witnessed Julian’s choice. "If she won't give us her blessing, I’ll take you away. We’ll leave this Pack behind."

Hidden behind a stone pillar, I let out a cold, hollow laugh. Through my blurred vision, I remembered how Chloe once spent three months' salary to take me to a spa. I remembered Julian cutting up fruit to feed me. I remembered how they used to compete to see who could be kinder to me.

A second later, those memories turned to ash. That love, and those two people, belonged only in the past.

I pulled out my phone and found the job offer that had been sitting in my inbox for months. Julian, I once gave up the chance to be the Lead Healer for the Silver City Pack just to stay by your side.

But now, I was choosing to leave.

Julian ran through every cemetery in the region like a man possessed. He asked at every gate and searched every row until, finally, at the edge of the territory in a graveyard overgrown with white roses, he found my mother’s name. Her headstone was new, and her photo showed her smiling, just as she used to look at him.He remembered her holding his hand, her eyes shining with hope. "Julian, I’m entrusting Elara to you. Love her well and make her the happiest female in the Pack." When he fell to his knees, they slammed against the stone with a dull thud, but he felt nothing."Ma'am..." his voice was a ragged whisper. What could he possibly say? Could he tell her that while a rogue’s silver claws were ripping my back open, he was busy icing Chloe’s bruises? Could he admit that while I knelt alone in a hospital hallway praying for her life, he was cradling Chloe to sleep? He remained there, kneeling from afternoon until the sky turned black. When the groundskeeper came to close the gat

Julian couldn’t stop his mind from spiraling back to the exact moment Elara’s mother suffered her fatal attack. The scene played on a loop in his head: he had burst into the room to find Elara’s mother frail and gasping on the bed, while Elara herself was screaming, her hands locked onto Chloe’s arms. At the time, he was convinced Elara was the aggressor—that she was the one "making a scene."But the brutal truth had finally surfaced. It was Chloe. Chloe had provoked a dying woman until her heart gave out.And Julian? He had stood on the wrong side. He had stood against the woman he claimed to love, ruthlessly shoving her away. He hadn't even glanced at the jagged wound on Elara's back before walking out with her tormentor. The last of his strength evaporated. Julian collapsed onto the floor, his hand shaking so violently he could barely hold his phone."I’m sorry, Elara... I was wrong. It’s all my fault.""Please... just pick up the phone."He dialed her number again and again, like a

The next morning, the sun’s glare jolted Julian awake. He reached up to shield his eyes, only to find Chloe sleeping naked against his arm. They had spent the night tangled together. But as he looked at her, a hollow ache gnawed at his chest. Not a single text from Elara. Not one.In the past, she would have bombarded his phone with frantic, hysterical questions. Now, the silence of his phone was more terrifying than any confrontation. He couldn't shake the image of Elara from the previous day—collapsed on the floor, blood soaking through the back of her shirt, dragging herself toward the door while screaming for a Healer. In that moment, a sharp pang had pierced his heart. He had instinctively wanted to rush to her, to scoop her up and hold her.But then he had seen her coldness toward Chloe. He had suppressed his protective instinct, telling himself she needed to be taught a lesson. Now, that arrogance was being replaced by a crawling sense of dread. He pulled his arm away, startling

I went to the Pack pharmacy to pick up the last few herbal prescriptions for my mother. When I returned to her hospital room, the sound of violent screaming echoed from inside.I rushed into the room to find Chloe kneeling by my mother’s bedside, her face drenched in tears."I’m so sorry, ma'am. I’m the one who hurt Elara. I’m the one who tore them apart," she sobbed. "I’m shameless! I seduced Julian! Please, just hit me! I’ll leave the Pack for good! I’ll give Elara back her happiness!"My mother’s frail body couldn't handle the shock. Trembling with fury, she pointed a finger at Chloe and forced herself to stand up from the bed."Shut up !" my mother rasped. "I will never let my daughter be mated to a piece of trash who’s been sleeping with you!"As she took a single step, she collapsed heavily onto the floor, clutching her chest and gasping for air."Ma'am! What’s happening ?" Chloe reached out to help her, but I lunged forward and shoved her hands away."What the hell are you doing

  • Mated to a Liar   Chapter 3

After finishing the admission paperwork for my mother, I returned to the place we called "home". The walls were still covered in those piercing red decorations. I wasn't tall enough to reach, so Julian had lifted me up, letting me press them into place with my own hands. I remembered leaning against his shoulder, the scent of pine clinging to him, feeling like the luckiest woman in the world. Even the red bedding had been something we picked out together. The happiness we had built brick by brick was shattered in a single day.I had just opened my suitcase when Julian walked in. He headed straight for the bedroom, likely assuming I was just throwing a tantrum."The house is yours. You don’t have to move; I’ll be the one to leave," he said, his tone chillingly calm. "You don't need to pay back any of the money I gave you; consider it a settlement. Just stop making trouble for Chloe. She hasn't had it easy"That last sentence made me snap."She hasn't had it easy? What about me, Julian?"
