Bernice’s POV
“I came to speak with you…”
My heart was heavy in my stomach as I remained at the top of the stairs, listening to Cora and Landry speaking in the foyer. There was a part of me that was hoping that he would dismiss her and that he would come upstairs with me.
But he didn’t.
He went into the living room with her to speak in private. I couldn’t bring myself to go down the stairs and listen to the rest of their conversation. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat and went to the bathroom and take a bath.
I tried to brush the thought of Landry with Cora out of my mind, but I couldn’t help it. I wondered what their relationship was. He had said they were old friends, but I couldn’t help but think there was more than he was saying. Even Jessie seemed uneasy to see Cora. That had to be something else going on that I wasn’t aware of.
