I sat upright on my bed with the ghost of Kaelenâs scent still clinging to my skin and the weight of last nightâs decisions pressing on my chest. The cave, the storm, the way his body had felt so close to mine under that thin blanket... it all replayed in my mind like a fever dream. I touched my pendant, still warm, and sighed. I had to warn him. The hunters were coming for him at dusk. But first, I had to survive breakfast. * The market in the nearby town was busy as usual. Pa had sent me to pick up supplies since the compound was running low. Last time, I had an ugly experience at the market which made me return to the pack empty handed. I moved through the stalls, basket in hand, trying to focus on the list. That was when I saw her. My vision sharpened suddenly..... almost like it zoomed in without warning. A girl my age, with sharp features, fiery orange-red hair streaked with black, and clever amber eyes, was stealthily slipping goods into her cloak from one of the tradersâ stalls. She moved like liquid shadow. No one else seemed to notice. I blinked hard, rubbing my eyes. What is happening to me? She finished and melted into the crowd without a sound. I sighed and continued my own shopping, paying quickly before heading back toward the compound. Halfway down the forest path, I froze. The same girl stepped out from behind a tree, blocking my way. She gave me an unfriendly, assessing look and began circling me slowly. âYou smell⊠different,â she said, voice light but edged with suspicion. I cleared my throat. âWhat are you talking about?â She stopped, keeping a safe distance, and pointed at me. âYou saw me in the market, didnât you?â I didnât answer, surprised she had noticed me. âAre you going to report me?â she asked, tilting her head. I sighed and started walking past her. âIf I wanted to, I wouldâve told on you the moment I saw you.â âItâs rude to walk out on someone while theyâre talking to you,â she called, folding her arms. âMy bad,â I replied, heavy with sarcasm. âI have far more important things to do.â I kept walking. In a flash, my basket was snatched from my arm. Before I could react, she was already darting away through the trees with my foodstuffs. âHey!â I snapped, breaking into a run. âGet back here! You little thief!â I chased her as hard as I could, but she was too fast....unnaturally fast. My lungs burned and my legs felt like lead. Eventually I crouched on the path, breathing heavily, watching her figure disappear into the distance. âNow I wish I had reported her,â I muttered bitterly. * I returned to the compound empty-handed again. The moment I stepped into the courtyard, several hunters noticed. âLexiâs back... and still with nothing,â one of them laughed. âWhat happened this time? Another mysterious thief?â I kept my head down. âYes. I was robbed on the way back.â More laughter erupted. âRobbed? Again? Girl, youâre nineteen and you canât even handle a simple supply run?â Another hunter jeered, âMaybe sheâs not cut out for this life. Always running off at night, coming back with wild stories, weak as a kittenâŠâ âRunning off last night had the whole compound searching for her, and now this?â someone else added. âWe should tie her to the kitchen if she canât be useful.â The words stung. I clenched my fists, cheeks burning with humiliation and guilt. âEnough.â Paâs deep voice cut through the mockery like a blade. Everyone fell silent. âTomas, go get the supplies again. Lexi, inside.â Tomas gave me a reassuring nod as he passed. âYou hurt?â he asked quietly. I shook my head. âNo. Iâm fine.â But the guilt gnawed at me. I had spent the night with a werewolf while my family worried. And now I couldn't even help out with the least.. * Later that midday, I snuck around the edges of the compound, staying out of sight. I needed to know the exact plans. Near the armory, I overheard Gretoniaâs smooth voice speaking with Pa and the senior hunters. ââŠthe raid on the rogue happens at dusk. Use the new silver netting... itâll drop him instantly. Enhanced wolfsbane on the blades. This oneâs been causing too much trouble.â Gretonia chuckled. âThere are rumors of special blood in these woods lately. Powerful lines. We capture him alive if possible. Could be valuable.â My stomach twisted with instinctive disgust. The thought of Kaelen being caught, tortured, or killed made me feel physically ill. My hands started trembling. I gripped a nearby metal tool for support and accidentally crushed it in my palm without even trying. I stared at the bent metal, heart racing. How did I - What's this? What's happening? I made a mental note to find Kaelen as fast as possible. But it was almost impossible....Pa had stationed extra guards to watch me closely after last night. I hadnât told them where Iâd been, and I never would. I spent the rest of the afternoon pretending to train while my mind calculated escape routes. When they rested, I strategized. * Night finally fell. The compound grew quiet. I double-checked the guardsâ positions and chose a different, riskier route. Just as I was about to slip through the shadows and run, a blood-curdling scream tore through the air. I froze. No one else seemed to stir. Were they all asleep? The scream came again... raw and desperate. I hid quickly and traced it to Gretoniaâs private caravan area. Heart pounding, I crept closer and peeked through a small window. What I saw made my blood run cold. A girl was strapped naked to a table. Wait - the same thief from the market? Had she stolen from them? Gretonia stood over her with a smirk, his men assisting as they poured a lethal-looking liquid over her skin. She screamed again, as the liquid physically burned her skin, body convulsing. Then⊠something surprising happened. Her form shimmered and twisted. Fur sprouted, ears lengthened, and in a flash of colorful light, she transformed into a fox-like creature... sleek, with vibrant reddish-orange fur and multiple swaying tails. A kitsune. A gasp escaped my lips before I could stop it. I shot away from the window, heart hammering wildly, and pressed myself against the wall. What the hell?? They were other creatures like that? I only read about them in one of the books Pa kept in his personal library. Everything I thought I knew about the world was crumbling. Werewolves.. And now, a Kitsune? One that is in trouble. Because Gretonia seemed like he was enjoying every bit of it.đș KAELEN đș The entire valley was awake. Rogues poured out of their cabins, weapons already in hand. Growls echoed through the settlement as warriors rushed toward the entrance. The valley had been surrounded. My first thought was simple. Varg. Or another feral raid. I shifted my grip on my sword as Ronan, Garrick and several Deltas fell into formation beside me. We crossed the clearing without a word. The moment we reached the border... I stopped. They weren't ferals. They were Dreadhowl warriors. At the front of them stood a familiar black wolf. It shifted and moments later, Vilkras Blackwood stood before us. Our eyes met and the air turned colder. Vilkras slowly looked around the valley, his lip curling with barely concealed disgust. "So..." "This is where the great Kaelen Blackwood has been hiding." I didn't rise to the bait. "State your business." I muttered. A smirk tugged at his lips. "Straight to the point." His gaze shifted past me and I followed it. A small
âąTHIRD PERSON'S POVâą The rogues continued with their murmurs. Lexi kept her head down, the little wolf pup still clinging to her hand. She could feel every stare burning into her skin. The hostility was thick and suffocating. She wouldn't blame them. She was among the people who saw to the end of their kind, even though she didn't fully participate in their hunt down. Kaelenâs jaw tightened. He stopped in the center of the clearing and turned to face the gathered rogues. His voice rang out, calm but commanding. âShe is my mate.â The valley fell silent. Then the murmurs exploded. âA human mate?â âImpossible!â âSheâs a hunter!â Kaelenâs golden eyes swept over them. âShe is under my protection. Anyone who touches her answers to me.â The rogues fell quiet, but the resentment lingered in their eyes. Kaelen took Lexiâs hand and led her away from the crowd, toward his cabin. Ronan appeared, smiling as he took the little wolf pupâs hand. âIâll take the kid to the oth
âą THIRD PERSON'S P.O.V âą A deafening roar split the forest. The trees exploded apart as a massive black wolf burst into the clearing, landing between Lexi and the feral wolves with enough force to shake the ground. Leaves and dust billowed into the air. The little wolf pup gasped. Lexi froze. She had seen Kaelen before, but never like this. He towered over every wolf present, his jet-black fur shimmering beneath the early afternoon sun. His golden eyes burned with quiet fury as a deep growl rumbled from his chest. For the very first time...Lexi understood why everyone feared him. Even the feral wolves instinctively took several steps back. Only one remained where he stood. Varg. A slow laugh escaped him. "So..." "The Banished Prince finally arrived." The enormous black wolf ignored him completely. His gaze shifted from Varg...to Lexi. She stood trembling, one hand gripping her dagger while the other shielded the frightened wolf pup behind her. Inside Kaelen's mind, Kai'
âąThird Person POVâą The entire hunters' compound was frozen. No one spoke. No one moved. Every eye was locked on Lexi. The little wolf pup hid trembling behind her legs. The agent with the wolfsbane dagger slowly lowered his weapon - not because he was afraid, but because Gretonia had silently signaled him to stop. Gretonia had already won. He didnât need the child anymore. One hunter whispered, voice shaking, âShe⊠has claws.â Another noticed her eyes â the brief flash of red that hadnât quite faded. Someone else saw her fangs. Then fear spread like wildfire. Hunters began stepping backward. Others drew weapons. Someone shouted, âSheâs one of them!â The atmosphere changed instantly. Tomas looked at Lexi. She was standing protectively in front of the child, even as the hunters turned on her. He looked at the hunters â already raising their weapons. He looked at Harlan. Then he stepped in front of Lexi. Everyone was shocked. A hunter asked, voice sharp, âWhat
âąThird Person POVâą The approaching footsteps belonged to Tomas. He burst through the trees, eyes wild with panic. The sight that greeted him stopped him cold. Lexi...his sister.. was wrapped in a dark cloak, barely conscious, slumped against the rogue, Kaelen. Tomasâs reaction was explosive. âYou!â he roared, lunging forward. âYouâre the one who took her!â He grabbed Lexiâs arm and yanked her away from Kaelen, pulling her behind him. With his free hand, he drew his dagger, the blade coated in wolfsbane, and pointed it at the rogue. âStay away from her, beast!â Lexi was barely conscious, still recovering from the heat. Her body trembled as she tried to speak. âTomas⊠wait⊠itâs notââ Her voice was too weak. The words barely left her lips. More footsteps approached.. the hunters drawn by the noise. Tomas was distracted for a split second. In that moment, Kaelen vanished into the woods like a shadow. Tomas spun around, but the rogue was already gone. He cursed u
âą THIRD PERSON'S P.O.V âą The silver she-wolf stood frozen beneath the moonlight, her chest rising and falling rapidly. She didn't understand what she had become. Every instinct screamed at her to run. A low growl rumbled deep in her throat as she fixed her eyes on the man standing several feet away. Gretonia remained perfectly calm. His cane rested lightly against the forest floor while several cloaked men stood hidden among the trees behind him. None of them moved. Neither did he. His sharp blue eyes studied the silver wolf with quiet fascination. A faint smile touched his lips. "You've finally awakened." The she-wolf bared her fangs. She took a cautious step backward. Gretonia noticed everything. The way her ears twitched at every sound. The uncertainty in her stance. The fear hidden beneath the aggression. This was her first shift. She was trying to survive. His smile deepened. "The Moon Princess..." He spoke so softly it almost sounded like he was talking to himsel
