Chapter 4

I woke up, feeling disjointed. My eyes were puffy and my head hurt. My body protested when I tried to move and my phone started ringing in my purse. I heard a light knocking on the door of the borrowed room I slept in.

“Yeah?” I whisper and see Mary and Mrs. White come into the room. I try to sit up but it just makes me dizzy. They both rush over to help me and leave the door open causing me to groan with the light coming through the door. Landon and Luke walk by and just stare at me through the door.

“Boys, leave!” Mrs. White snaps at them as Mary walks over and slams the door in their faces.

“You okay, Mary?” I ask as they help me sit up. Mrs. White hands me a bottle of cold water that Mary brought in.

“Men are stupid.” Mary huffs out as she sits next to me and I wrap my arms around her and lay my head on hers.

“That they are my girls, just remember, mates and friends do stupid things too.” Mrs. White says as she sits at the edge of the bed. “But breakfast is done, so clean up and let's eat. Landon brought your suitcase in and it’s over by the dresser.”

I nodded. Landon was an asshole last night, but he-, nope, don’t even think about it. Landon was off limits and a relationship with him would never amount to anything in my life. I got up and grabbed clothes from my suitcase, taking a quick shower and cleaning my four piercings. The newest one healing overnight. I dressed quickly and dried my long silky black hair and walked out of the bathroom and out of the guest room.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs everyone said good morning, Landon just grunted and kept eating. Landon was my only high school crush, graduating two years ahead of us, he had disheveled blond hair and light blue eyes, he also was a former quarterback for the Mustangs in his Junior and Senior years. He was more muscular than his brother, and if we were being honest, I still liked him in a first crush way, but that all ended last night when he had snapped out at me last night.

“Look at you all dolled up for me.” Maverick, their cousin said as he got up from his spot and gave me a bear hug.

I laughed and hugged him back, flinching when Landon growled, yes, he growled at us. Maverick laughed and pulled me with him to the far end of the large table in the dining room.

“Don’t worry, auntie told me everything, your majesty.” He said with a deep exaggerated bow. I just laughed it off.

“Maverick, you will be a handful when you meet your mate.” Mrs. White said as she came into the room, loaded with three serving platters, all filled with bacon. Pancakes, and scrambled eggs. Maverick and Luke jumped up and helped her set the plates down. Landon stood and helped by serving the food for everyone with his mom.

“Mate?” I asked as Mrs. White handed me a plate.

“That’s what we call our soul mate. Mate for short.” Mrs. White sighed. “I suppose now is a good time to explain everything. Dear, we are what you call wolf shifters. Shifters, Vampires, witches, and a few other magical creatures live on Earth. We are called supernaturals. You happen to be Fae. That means you were born in Faerie or were born from a Fae and human. Nine times out of ten they are born and raised in Faerie.”

“So you are shifters and I’m Fae? How did I get here?” I ask as I look down at my plate, forgetting to eat. Maverick grabbed my hand and held it in comfort, making Landon growl at us again. He pushed himself away from the table and stormed out of the room, making me so mad that I pushed myself away from the table also and stomped out to find him. I found him quickly and snapped. He was making out with the same girl he had been with in highschool. I gritted my teeth and walked away. I wasn’t going to make a fool of myself like I did in highschool.

I stomped back into the house and ran up the stairs, barely holding my tears in. For some reason it hurt to see him with another female that wasn’t me. I guess I never got over my crush on him. I ran into the guest room and slammed and locked the door, doing the same as I walked into the bathroom. I put my back against the door and cried, and cried, and cried. I felt like everything in me was shattering. I could feel my heart being sliced and diced every second I was in the bathroom. Then all of a sudden it stopped and I passed out on the cold floor, weeping in relief.

When I awoke, I was on the bed that I had slept on last night and I wasn’t alone. Mary and Luke were in the room, sitting at the bottom of the bed arguing about Landon.

“Mary, it’s not our responsibility to tell our best friend that. You know we can’t go against pack law. He thought that she was human and was going to wait for her to be of age to accept the change or destroy him,” Luke was saying.

“He just needs to watch what happens, your mom, our Luna, and I both think that he is an idiot. He needs to either tell her or let her go. No amount of begging is going to save this, and he knows that. I can’t believe he would do this to her and think it’s okay. If he’s going to be the next Alpha, then he needs to man up or I’m moving to a different pack.” Mary snapped at him.

I groan, letting them know that I was waking up, so they would stop talking about that asshole. I didn’t want anything more to do with him. My stomach growled as I fully woke up and realized that it was lunch time. I looked at the clock and sighed. Dinner and Breakfast had been ruined thanks to everything that had happened in less than twenty-four hours.

“Wow, I love her hair. I’ve never seen anyone wake up beautiful!” Mary said in disbelief.

“Well that seems to be a Fae thing, beautiful no matter what situation they find themselves in.” Luke commented.

“You guys know that I’m sitting right here and you’re talking about me like I'm still asleep?” I question them as I get up and walk to the bathroom and wash my face.

Looking up into the mirror I see the new me. Long black hair and bright green eyes and pointy ears. I wanted to hate what I had become so badly, but I didn’t. This was the real me. Pointy ears and all. I felt complete. I didn’t want to go back to feeling like I didn’t belong. I accepted the new me and mourned the old me. I will figure out who and what I am. Somehow.

“Girl, let's get lunch and eat outside.” Mary said as she all but dragged me out of the bathroom and out of the guest room.

Mrs. White was waiting with a picnic basket at the front door. She waved us on as we left. Hoping to finally be able to eat, I let her drag me to a clearing in the trees where kids were playing and running around. Mary and I set up in a shaded spot, sat, and we finally ate. They were just PB&J but they tasted like heaven. I moaned as I ate my second one and a bag of chips and a bottle of water. Finally full, I lay back as Mary ate and waited for her to get done.

“So, do you have any questions for me?” Mary asked as she drank her water.

“Are you a shifter too?” I ask as I sat up and look straight at her.

“Yes. I’m a wolf shifter. I was born in the pack and when my parents passed, they were beta’s, I was taken in by my grandma and she raised me as a beta’s child should be. You know how we met in boxing class in Des Moines? Well, I stayed because of you.” She said with a large smile. “I hated taking that class but you made it fun when you were freestyling and added gymnastics into the mix. I told granny about the human who made that class even more fun. I loved it, until granny passed last year and I found out at the funeral that Luke was my mate. The men always know first at sixteen. I was only fifteen and we waited til my birthday, six months later, that he was in fact my mate.”

“Thank you for telling me, Mar. I know that you didn’t have to, but I’m glad we know each other and I’m thankful that you and Luke are my best friends.” I say as I hug her close to me.

“Well duh. I wanted to sooner, but I wasn’t allowed until you were eighteen and the elders were sure they could trust you.” Mary said as she hugged me back. “So what do you plan to do? Your birthday is in two days and I don’t know about you but I feel like you should find your parents and learn how to control your powers before they fizz out of control.”

I sighed for what was like the millionth time in less than twenty-four hours. I know I should look for my birth parents but I didn’t want to leave my friends. I wanted to celebrate it with them. Looking around the clearing I see Landon and Luke arguing, I point them out to Mary just as Luke punches his brother. I hate causing confrontation. Mary and I spring up and run over to Luke, but we were too late. Landon punched him back and jumped on top of him and started punching him over and over again.

“Landon! Stop!” I yell as we reach them. Landon looked up at me with hate filled eyes and removed himself from the situation. “I think it’s best if I leave tonight.”

“Just wait til your birthday, please?” Mary asks as we pick Luke up and take him home and explained to Mrs. White what had happened.

“I’m going to go to sleep. I’ll see everyone in the morning.” I walk to my room and see Landon standing in my doorway. “Can I help you?”

“Yeah, you can leave and never come back, you filthy Fae!” He roared at me. I felt my whole world shatter. Tears welled up and I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be gone soon enough and you won’t have to worry about a filthy Fae ruining your life,” I snapped at him and pushed him out of my way and slammed the door in his face. I quickly locked the door and held in my sobs. I wouldn’t let his words break me. Not now, not ever.
