Ashton's POV

I stood by the far corner of the rooftop, one hand in my pocket, the other loosely gripping a glass of soda I hadn’t touched. My P.A., James, was saying something beside me, probably updating me on some follow-up meeting or relaying an investor's feedback. But I wasn't listening.

My eyes were on her.

Lily.

She stood near the center of the room, wearing that wine-red dress like it was made for her. Her back straight, chin high, her presence loud without saying a word. She moved through the crowd like she belonged there...and she did. Every pair of eyes followed her. Whispers floated around. Some admiration. Some envy. All of them aware that Lily Evans was someone you didn’t overlook.

She laughed at something someone said, and for a second, I forgot how to breathe.

God.

She hadn't laughed like that around me in years. Hell, maybe never. Not genuinely. Not freely. Not like she was now, with people who saw her as she deserved to be seen.

"Sir?" James's voice broke through the noise in my head.

"Hmm?"

"Mr. Langston asked if you’d give a quick word later, after Miss Evans finishes hers."

My eyes narrowed. "What do you mean by her speech?"

James gestured to the center where the small podium had been set up. A hostess was now stepping onto it, microphone in hand. "The board invited her to give a short speech on modern brand building. It was last minute."

I didn’t reply. I just kept watching.

The room quieted when the hostess called Lily up. She moved gracefully, the heels barely making a sound. She took the mic, smiled once...that smile that used to undo me in ways I couldn’t explain...and began.

"I’m not sure why anyone wants to hear me talk," she started. Laughter spread through the room. "But here goes."

I watched every second.

Her voice. Her posture. Her words.

She spoke about grit. About building something out of nothing. About being underestimated, overlooked, and counted out. About finding your space when no one was willing to give you one.

People clapped, laughed, nodded. Phones came out to record. Even the waiters paused to listen.

And all I could think was, I did this. I broke her down, and somehow, she rose from it.

That memory...of her walking out of my office that day with tears in her eyes, a small box in her hands, wearing the cardigan she kept on her desk chair...that memory had hunted me for years.

I could still hear my voice from that day. Cold. Robotic. "You're no longer needed."

What a lie.

She was all I’d ever needed.

Valerie had been a transaction. A tie-up for shareholders. A name on a contract. She was smart, yes. Pretty. But I never loved her. Not the way I loved Lily. Not with the way she made my skin ache from a distance. Not with the way her voice stayed in my head even after she left.

And now...

She hated me. I saw it in her eyes. She didn’t even try to pretend.

She thought I didn't deserve to know my own son.

I almost laughed. Not because it was funny. Because it hurt so much it made me feel stupid.

How could I blame her?

The day she told me he wasn't mine, I knew she was lying. I saw it in the way her eyes avoided mine. The way her voice tightened, like she was trying too hard to make it sound real.

But what broke me more than that?

It was hearing how much I’d hurt her. How deeply she remembered every word I said. Every move I made. The night I had her, only to pretend it meant nothing.

It wasn’t that it didn’t mean anything.

It was that it meant too much. And I didn't know how to handle that.

I felt James lean closer. "Do you want me to get the car ready?"

I shook my head. "No. Not yet."

My eyes were still on her.

She was wrapping up her speech now. People were already rising to their feet. Cheering. Applauding. Someone even whistled.

She didn’t look at me once.

Not even by accident.

I caught the glance of a woman beside me. She smiled. Probably in her late thirties. Designer heels, lips painted dark red, the kind who always found her way into rooms like this.

"Mr. Carter, isn’t it?"

I gave her a polite nod.

"I loved your last interview on TechWire," she said, angling her body toward mine. "Very impressive." Her eyes dropped to my mouth, lingering.

"Thank you," I replied coolly.

She waited for more.

I gave nothing.

Her smile faltered slightly, then she moved on.

James tried to hide his smirk. "You know she just made a whole plan in her head about having your kids, right?"

I didn’t respond.

Because the only child I cared about was the one I never got to know. A little boy with my eyes and Lily’s nose. A kid who probably liked dinosaurs and made her late to work because he didn't want to eat carrots.

My son.

"Sir," James said again, his voice lower. "Are you sure this is the time and place to handle this? Maybe we should let it breathe. She’s emotional."

"She has every right to be," I said quietly. "And I have every right to want to know my son."

James looked like he wanted to say something else, but held back.

Smart.

Lily stepped off the podium, smiling at someone, thanking a man who handed her a drink. Dana was beside her, proud like she was the one who raised her.

I stepped forward.

James followed, but I paused. "Give us a minute."

"Yes, sir."

Lily turned when I reached her. Her smile faded the second she saw me.

I saw the wall come up again.

"You did good up there," I said quietly.

"You can save the compliments, Ashton."

I nodded once. "Okay. But I meant it."

She looked away. Dana was still close, watching me like she’d throw her drink in my face if I said the wrong thing.

"Can I walk with you?" I asked.

Lily let out a tired sigh. "Do I have a choice?"

"Not really."

She didn’t respond, but she didn’t stop me either.

We moved toward the far end of the rooftop, away from the crowd.

"Lily..." I started.

"Don’t," she said, turning to face me. "Don’t ask again. The answer is no."

"He’s my son."

"And like I told you earlier,  you’ll never be his father.”

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   018: Threat From Desperate Ex

ASHTON'S POVI was knee-deep in quarterly reports when the call came in. Tabs open across my laptop, documents printed out and scattered across the bed like a paper battlefield. My phone buzzed once, and when I saw her name flash across the screen...Lily Evans...my heart skipped.I didn't even hesitate. I hit accept."Lily."She exploded.I barely got her name out before she was already yelling. Loud, sharp, like fire cracking through ice. She wasn't just angry. She was hurt. Her voice shook with something more than rage."Who the hell do you think you are?!"And I took it.Every word. Every insult. Every bit of venom she threw at me. I sat there on my bed, the glow from the bedside lamp hitting the corner of my laptop screen, and listened to her tear me apart. It was the kind of yelling that would leave anyone else speechless, humiliated. But not me.I deserved it.So I didn’t interrupt. I didn’t fight back. I let her scream, even when my name came out like a curse."You dress up in

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   017: The Call

Lily's POV. I paced. The living room was a mess...toys scattered, cushions lopsided, Nathan’s drawing book still open on the coffee table, that green dinosaur with a cape staring back at me like it knew what I was about to do.I couldn’t think straight.Nathan had gone to bed an hour ago. After his story, two glasses of water, a very serious negotiation about whether he needed socks to sleep in, and one more hug. He finally curled under his blanket, stuffed T-Rex in one arm, the other hand holding mine until he drifted off.And the entire time, I was pretending.Pretending like my world hadn’t just been flipped.Pretending like my son hadn’t come home and told me he met his father...my ex-boss...the man who fired me four years ago when I was pregnant with his child. A man who had shown up at my son’s school in a goddamn dinosaur suit and told him the truth before I could.I wanted to scream.Instead, I opened my laptop. There was only one person I could reach out to. Someone who’d st

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   016: The Day Everything Changed

Lily's POVI kicked off my heels the second the door clicked shut behind me. The relief was instant. My arches were screaming. My toes felt like they’d been slammed into bricks all day. My dress was crumpled from hours of sitting, standing, walking, repeating. My makeup had surrendered somewhere between the mayor's speech and the endless photos. And my head? My head was a balloon. Full, aching, and ready to pop."Nathan?" I called, dragging myself down the hallway. My voice came out rougher than I intended. I cleared my throat. "Munchkin? I'm home."A beat passed. Then..."Mommy!"That little voice could’ve knocked down walls.I smiled, muscles relaxing in a way they hadn’t all day. That sound always did it. No matter how chaotic, how burnt out, how drained I felt...Nathan's voice cut through all of it.I followed the sound into the living room. There he was. Curled up in his favorite spot, dressed in his bright green dino hoodie...his favorite. He was clutching his T-Rex plush, the o

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   015: Truth Revealed

Ashton’s POVNathan dragged me toward the sandpit with surprising strength for a four-year-old. My dinosaur tail swayed behind me like it had a mind of its own. I still had the full costume on, minus the oversized head. I probably looked ridiculous...a CEO in a sweaty green costume, waddling after a toddler. But honestly, I didn’t care."This is where we build volcanoes," Nathan announced, pointing to a messy, slightly lopsided mound of sand. "And we bury treasure. But don’t step on that side." He pointed to the left. "That’s lava. You’ll melt."I crouched beside him and nodded seriously. "Got it. No lava. Volcanoes only. Noted, sir."He grinned, his front tooth slightly crooked, and plopped down. The sand puffed around him.He picked up a red plastic shovel and handed me a blue bucket. "You make the mountain. I’ll make the treasure.""Deal," I said, kneeling into the sand. The costume was already sticky with sweat, but I powered through. If Nathan wanted volcanoes, he’d get a damn mo

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   014: Through The Eyes Of A Child

Ashton's POVI don't know what part of me agreed to this. Maybe the part that hadn’t stopped thinking about him since I saw his face. Maybe the part of me that remembered Lily’s eyes that day when she said, "You don’t deserve him."Maybe she was right. But it didn’t stop me.It had been two days since the brunch, and every hour that passed without seeing Nathan made something in me ache. The kind of ache that felt heavy in the chest. James and I had gone through every ridiculous idea imaginable. I couldn't call. Lily would've blocked me. Showing up at her house would lead to security turning me away. I considered a custody case. That alone made me sick. I didn’t want to fight her.I just wanted to meet him.So here I was. Standing in the faculty restroom of Ridgewell Preparatory Academy, sweating inside a full-body dinosaur costume. A green one with bulging eyes, a soft tail, and gloves that made gripping anything nearly impossible."Sir," James said from outside the door. "You really

  • Mr. CEO Wants Me Back   013: Coffee, Croissant, And Unexpected Company

Lily's POV. I was running on fumes. The kind of tired that seeps into your bones and makes your brain feel static. It had been back-to-back meetings since 8 a.m. My heels were killing me. My phone wouldn’t stop buzzing. And Dana had warned me this charity meet-and-greet would be quick. Just an hour, she said.It had already been two and a half.I stood near the back of the community center's event hall, clutching a folder of sponsorship documents for our Maison Evana x FutureBloom Foundation collab. All around me, smiles were being exchanged over glasses of juice and branded water bottles. Cameras flashed. Volunteers laughed. Local press hovered near the mayor like moths."Breathe," Dana said under her breath, stepping beside me. "You look like you’re about to collapse.""I feel like I already did," I mumbled.Dana offered a sympathetic smile and took the folder from me. "Go get some air. Or sit. Or fake a phone call and vanish for ten minutes. I’ll handle these last sign-offs."I di
