Chapter 14

By the time Su Jianxi returned to the Su Family, it was already seven at night.

She had only been away for three to four days, but when she returned this time, she realized that her home felt totally unfamiliar to her now.

Her favorite swing had long since disappeared from the yard, and even the lavender that Mom used to love back when she was alive had been completely obscured by the shrubs Qin Feng bought home.

Everything else in the house had also changed after Mom passed away, or that was how it felt like.

She could not find any trace of her mother in this house anymore.

“Jianxi, hurry up and come in. It’s cold outside.”

Qin Fen was wearing an apron, and she looked overjoyed to see Su Jianxi.

Su Jianxi looked at Qin Fen, who looked more like the lady of the house and nothing like the nanny. Evading Qin Fen as she tried to take Su Jianxi’s hand, the young woman quickly darted into the living room.

Su Bohai was sitting on the couch, reading a finance magazine. Shen Siming and Su Huanran were here as well.

The moment Shen Siming saw Su Jianxi, he immediately took Su Jianxi’s hand and said concernedly, “Where did you go, Jianxi? I looked for you all over the company, but I couldn’t find you anywhere.”

A faint fragrance wafted into Su Jianxi’s nose from Shen Siming’s body. It was one of Su Huanran’s favorite Dior scents.

Su Jianxi stealthily pulled her hand away from him. “I was busy, so I left first.”

“Since Jianxi is back now, let’s eat.” Su Bohai put down the magazine and stood up, walking toward the dinner table.

Naturally, everyone followed him, and the five of them sat around the table, eating dinner.

In the past, Su Jianxi felt that it was lonely when she and Su Bohai were the only ones eating.

That was why she suggested inviting Su Huanran and Qin Fen to eat with them as well. It was pretty nice to make the huge manor a little livelier.

Now, however, she felt as though she had been slapped across the face. She really was a hopeless fool back then.

As she looked at these people, who had all played her like a fiddle, she had no appetite whatsoever.

Before she put her bowl down, Su Bohai was the first to speak, asking her, “Huanran, your eyes look all red. Did something happen?”

It sounded like an innocuous question, but Su Jianxi was instantly on high alert.

Li Tingxiao was right. This was no simple dinner!

“It’s nothing, Uncle Li. Just some stuff happened at work.” Su Huanran said it was fine, but she looked really upset and depressed.

“I watched you grow up, and I can tell that this definitely isn’t nothing. Tell me, what happened?”

At Su Bohai’s words, Su Huanran finally lost control and burst into tears.

“Jianxi, you already quit showbiz, so please, could you not fight me for the role? You’re the heiress of the Su Family, and you have your dad and Shen Siming. If I don’t have that film, I won’t have anything.”

Su Huanran sounded lowly and depressed, but her tears flowed like pearls on a broken string.

“W-What’s happening here?” Su Bohai put his chopsticks down, getting agitated as well.

“Huanran, go upstairs. It isn’t every day Jianxi comes home, so how could you make a scene like this?” Qin Fen immediately looked upset and she tried to drag her daughter upstairs.

Su Huanran refused to leave, though. She yanked Su Jianxi’s clothes, begging her with tears and snot flowing freely.

In the end, Shen Siming was the one who told Su Bohai every detail about what had happened today. Once Su Bohai knew the whole story, not only did he not blame them for asking his daughter to take the fall, he even helped Su Huanran to advise Su Jianxi. “Jianxi, you’re in the wrong this time. Since you already quit showbiz, why are you trying to steal Huanran’s role? It wasn’t easy for Huanran to get where she is today.”

Su Bohai’s words were like a knife in Su Jianxi’s side. “Dad, Su Huanran was the one who kept getting bad takes. That’s why she asked me to take her place. I took the blame and publicly apologized, but now the director specifically wants me to take the role. When did I ever try to steal it from her? It isn’t easy for Su Huanran to do anything, but is it any easier for me?”
