Chapter 31

In His House.

Lyla Atelo.

In all the senseless decisions I have ever made, this was the stupidest one. I pumped hard on my accelerator, begging my car to move faster as it tried its best to get me home.

"You're back." Michael smiled at me once I opened the door.

He was seated in the living room, watching the news on the screen. I almost paid no attention to him, giving him a flippant answer as I rushed to the kitchen immediately, washing my hands under the sink.

It wasn't long before I started chopping the vegetables that would give me a thick soup when added together. This was going to help with the cold. Not once did I pause to think... to ask myself if what I was doing was right.

"Are you okay? You seem a little... I don't know? Off? Out of breath?" Michael stood at the doorway as I towelled myself after showering.

I could only force a smile as I hurriedly threw some clothes on.

"I'm fine. I'm just heading out for a bit."

I was able to get the coordinates from one of the students in school; I didn't ask outright though. They said he lives alone. The drive to his house was about an hour's ride, and my mouth fell open. How could one person live in a house so big. No, scratch that! This was a mansion.

"Do you have an appointment with Mr. Dominic?" The guards asked me.

I shook my head. "No. Not really. Um... Can I speak to Mr. Taylor?"

There was no way I would lie that I had an appointment with Sage. What if they had a list of visitors? I shuddered at the humiliation that would follow. Using Mr. Taylor was the right excuse.

"What's your name? Let me call him."

"Lyla... Lyla Atelo." I said after a while, hoping that Taylor remembered who I was.

After a while of tapping on my steering wheel, the guard opened the gate for me to drive in. Once I parked in front of the entrance of the georgian-styled house, made with red bricks and rectangular windows... but I could tell it was equipped with modern technology. The security cameras said that much.

The door was opened, and I jumped in shock when I saw Taylor opening the car for me to step out.

"Lyla... It's a pleasure to have you." He said politely as I stepped out of the car, clutching the flask of food tightly.

"Mr. Taylor, hello. I didn't see you when I drove in." I tried to smoothen my voice.

"Don't mind me. I was taking a walk in the maze, that's why. I assume you're here to see the master." His eyes met mine, and I searched for any form of judgement in them, but there was none. There was a neutral expression on his face.

"Yes." My voice lowered. From the corner of my eyes, I saw the windows of one of the rooms parting. Even though I couldn't see clearly since it was evening, I could tell that I was being watched. By him... "I heard he fell sick. And since it's my fault, I came here to.. um..."

To what? What was I even doing here?

"It's fine. Come with me." He told me, turning around and walking ahead of me to the white door in front.

I confirmed my beliefs about the house being equipped with technology because there was an elevator to my right.

"Just step into the elevator and it will take you right up. I believe the master is already aware of your presence."

Yeah, no doubt about that.

There was an uneasy bubbling in my chest at the short ride of the elevator. Once it opened, I spotted Sage instantly. He sat in a dimly lit room behind a desk, puffing out smoke from his lungs with a cigarette lodged between his slender fingers. My throat tightened, and I could feel a surge in my core.

He sat lazily, his features illuminated by the amber light coming from the desk lamp. He was bare bodied. I gulped.

This was the first time that I was seeing him shirtless. His body was well defined... His abs down to the vee line was... entrancing...

"Sage... Hey." I tried to speak, but it came out strained. My body hummed at the sight of him. "I...uh...was told you fell sick after you helped save me."

He tapped off the ash of the cigarette into the ashtray beside him. "Who told you that?"

His voice was deep.

Dark.

Controlled.

Nothing like the Sage I knew. This person in front of me was... detached... in every sense of the word. I didn't know how to answer him. I didn't want to put his best friend in trouble if this was supposed to be a secret.

"Um... That's what everyone in school speculates." I tried to frame the words.

He was looking at me. His eyes searching mine intensely. His Adam's apple bopped as he took the last drag of cigarette in his fingers. He placed the cigarette into the ashtray and began tapping his fingers on the table.

"What exactly are you doing here, Lyla?" He asked, releasing the smoke from his mouth which curled into circles in the air.

"I didn't know you smoked..." I tried not to sound awkward as I neared the table. "I brought you some soup to help with the cold."

"Is that really why you're here? In my house? By this time?" He cocked his head to the side, and there was a glint in his eyes.

My breath hitched at the dangerous but sensual lips that curled into something I couldn't understand... Something that sent my heart palpitating in pleasure.

"I... I... only came to br...bring you food." I stuttered as I spoke. "Nothing more. I felt guilty for being the reason why you fell sick...after you didn't show up in school. And..." The words stuck in my throat. "I mean... I called your phones and you weren't answering. And I got really worried."

"Worried?" He dragged out the words as if it meant a lot to him. "Don't you know that coming here is dangerous?"

He slowly stood up, rising to his full height. The sight made my throat constrict. He was really tall... Sexy...

"Dangerous?" I whispered, my heart racing. "I... I just came..." I took a step back as he took a step forward.

My throat dried up instantly and I couldn't make out any words until I was pressed against the wall with Sage's hot breath washing over my face.

His fingers traced my face as he stared deeply into my eyes, sucking me into those depths of his.

"You're here for something else, Lyla." His voice was husky. "Tell me what it is, sweetheart." His fingers brushed against my lips.

Chapter 50The Twist.Lyla Atelo.“I'm not…”“…wealthy enough to purchase this? Of course I know that. Sage gifted this to you, right?” Her eyes were beaming in joy. She didn't look disgusted at all about anything.“What other things did he get for you?” She peered into the box that sat in front of us, trying to rummage through it.“You know I can't accept this, right?” Right now, I needed her support for me to turn down these gifts. It was too much. I couldn't handle something this big.“Why not?” Ivy paused and lifted her head to stare at me with a frown.“It's not right, and you know that.” I tried to stress out, but Ivy didn't seem to be following. “He is… you know, he's my student. I'm his teacher. This kind of thing isn't supposed to be going on between us.”Ivy's eyebrows rose further up and she rolled her eyes. “Take it as a simple gift from a student.”“Simple? You call this simple?” I pointed to the document that still lay on the table. “It's a freaking Jewellery store. Not

Chapter 49A Brand New Owner.Lyla Atelo.Sage wasn't in school for the rest of the week, and today was Friday. I had texted him over and over again, but he never responded. I was tempted to go over to his house, but I didn't want a repeat of the last time.I was currently sitting in my office when the door was forcefully pushed open, and my least favourite person walked into the office.“Hello, Sara.” I folded my hands on my table and sat up to face her squarely. She gave me a once-over before taking in my office as if she had never been here before.“Will Sage be coming for Camp?” She asked outrightly.“Excuse me?”“You heard me right. Or are you dumb?”I choose to ignore her choice of words. “I heard you loud and clear, but what I don't understand is why you're asking me.”“Aren't you the one he's fucking?” She said calmly, not at all fazed by the vulgarity of what she was saying.“If you were remanded in court and asked to prove those allegations, would you be able to?”“Don't you

Chapter 48Naughty Little Slut.Lyla Atelo.I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed and optimistic for some unknown reason. I turned to my side, watching Michael sleep peacefully beside me. I rolled my eyes and began to prepare for school.“You're quite late today. That's so unlike you.” Dominic, one of my male colleagues, pointed out as we walked side by side down the corridor.I shrugged. “I slept late, and I woke up late.”His mouth curved into a small smile, “Your husband kept you up all night, aye?” He teased slightly, and it took all of me not wince at his words.I forced a smile on my face with a little ‘heh heh’ to avoid the question. “So, are you prepared for the camping experience?”He understood my discomfort and immediately changed the subject. “I wasn't picked. There are only two male teachers coming while the rest are females. Aren't you aware of this?” He squinted as if trying to remember something. “Seeing that you're the coordinator of the camp?”“Coordinator?” I

Chapter 47Coming To Camp?Lyla Atelo.I came home with a stupid smile on my face. Sage had made my entire evening and I was just smiling like a fool.“You're back," my husband appeared from the corner of the doorway leading to the kitchen. He wore an apron which suggested that he was cooking.I frowned slightly at the sight of that, while waiting for him to complain that I had come home late.“I'm back, yes.” I smiled a little at him.“And in high spirits as well.” He noted that part, “I hope you had a great day at work.”“I did. How about you?” I shrugged off my shoulder bag which was beginning to get heavy and set it on the table, taking in a deep breath of what he was cooking.“I made dinner. Would you like some?” He noted the actions of my nose before asking, but I shook my head immediately.I knew my husband by now. I could guess what he wanted from me, but I waited for him to say it. Michael never did any nice things for me unless he wanted something in return, and this wasn't

Chapter 46Take Me Home.Lyla Atelo.Sage did not say anything until the car came to a stop in a luxurious shopping mall where he went back to driving mode, parking the car at the exclusive parking lot. He stepped out to open the car for me, taking my arm in his."What are you doing? Where are we going? Why are we here?" I asked him even if I could guess what exactly it was that we were doing here."Shopping." He shrugged. "I saw on the internet that you should take a woman shopping when she is angry. It— ""But I'm not angry. Why would I be?"He gave me a quick look before shutting the car. "Yeah, right, you aren't. But I'm here to apologise anyway."Amidst my protests, Sage had his arms hooked around mine until we reached one of the most expensive jewellery stores in the city."Pick anything you'd like. Diamonds. Gold. Silver. Precious stones. Anything." He said as he signalled one of the sales assistants to come over. The girl gave me a once-over, and she did not hide her displeasu

Chapter 45In The Car.Lyla Atelo."Get In the car, Lyla." Sage's voice came in a little stronger this time as he looked over my shoulders. "Unless you want your colleagues to keep speculating that something is going on between us."Our eyes met when he said that, and I paused to think. Did he also have in mind the same question I had? I wanted to ask if there was actually something going on between us, but I didn't dare voice my question out. I didn't want to sound desperate, but still... something that Michelle said earlier egged me at the back of my mind."What do you think about Ivy?" I averted my gaze from his face and looked down to the tarred road. I looked everywhere else but at him. "Is it true you're into older women, and I'm just one of your conquest?"I suddenly felt the cold night wind hit my skin, and I looked up in alarm to see Sage backing away from him. He stared at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher before spinning his car key between his thumb and index finger.
