Chapter 6: What a Fiance Uses for

After asking Doctor Benjamin if Jillian could eat regular food, Amy waited for the nurse to bring breakfast for Jillian as meals were provided. Sadly, Jillian couldn’t eat the fast food until she truly recovered.

Jillian ate porridge a little, then complained of headache and nausea. Later, she vomited and stopped eating. Amy panicked and called the doctor again. Doctor Benjamin rushed to Jillian’s room to find she was unconscious.

Doctor Benjamin pressed a button. “I must check Jillian’s condition again through CT Scan.”

Then some hospital staff entered Jillian’s room. They asked Amy to leave the care unit first and waited in the waiting room while they moved Jillian to the CT Scan room. After a while, Doctor Benjamin approached Amy.

“Ms. Brooke, your sister’s condition needs the second surgery as there is a ruptured aneurysm—bleeding in the brain.”

Amy clenched her hands together and asked, “Why does she experience it, Doctor?”

“It can be because of the high blood pressure, but it is possible too because of stress or a strong emotion.” The doctor took a deep breath. “It will need surgery soon. The faster, the better.”

Amy sobbed, but nodded. “Yes, Doctor. Whatever it takes to save my sister, please do it.”

Doctor Benjamin bowed his head. “Ms. Johnson will give you the family agreement statement again for surgery. I will prepare for the surgery in an hour.” Then he left Amy.

Ms. Johnson, from the registration office, approached Amy and handed the similar forms she filled and signed for the first surgery. After reading the forms and information on the forms, Amy signed the form. The fee was another seven million. However, it was the last thing Amy was concerned about. Her sister’s life was the most important, and Amy would pay any price to have her sister healthy as she used to be.

After Ms. Johnson left her, Amy returned to Jillian’s room. She shed her tears and sank herself onto a couch in the waiting room. Covering her face with both hands, Amy sobbed because she was already happy to see Jillian awoke. However, the necessity for her sister to go through another surgery was more than she could handle.

That was when her phone rang. Amy ignored it for a moment. But then the phone blinked, showing an incoming message from her chat app. It’s from Jacob.

‘Amy, how is Jillian? I want to go to the hospital now. What meals do you want me to bring?’

Amy couldn’t type anything as her hands shook badly. She took a deep breath for a couple times, wiped her tears with tissue, and then went to the toilet to wash her face. The cool water calmed her wrecking nerves. After feeling better, she returned to the waiting room.

When she checked her phone, Jacob left a few messages. ‘Please call or reply as soon as you see this message.’, ‘Are you okay? Is Jillian okay?’, and the last one was, ‘I’m on my way there. Everything will be alright.’

Amy burst into tears again to read those messages. Jacob’s concern warmed her heart, but she needed him badly to be there with her in the most trying time of her life. Then, finally, with trembling fingers, she replied to Jacob’s message.

‘Jillian was conscious, but then, after eating porridge, she said she got a headache. Later, she was nauseated, vomited, and lost consciousness. The doctor had done a CT Scan. He said Jillian had a bleeding in her brain.’ Amy stopped typing as her eyes were blurry because of the tears. She sent the message first, then put the phone in her bag while hugging her knees and sobbed again.

It was too much to bear for her. Amy couldn’t imagine if the surgery couldn’t save Jillian’s life. She could only pray, though her prayer was a short one. ‘Please God, save my sister.’ Amy repeated the prayer several times.

After she could calm herself, Amy typed more. ‘Jillian will have another surgery in a few minutes to come. I’m afraid …. I don’t know what to do ….’

Jacob replied quickly. ‘I’ll be there soon. Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.’

After half an hour, Jacob came with several boxes of meals. He put the meals on the table. Without a word, Jacob hugged Amy. She whimpered in his embrace.

“Jillian … she laughed with me, asking for fast food. I thought everything will be alright. But then ….” She couldn’t continue her words. “She couldn’t feel her feet. I was already afraid. But then, knowing she has another brain bleeding, I don’t know what else I can say ....”

Jacob caressed Amy’s hair. “Let’s wait and pray. Let’s hope for the best.” Then he remembered something. “The fee, let me pay it.”

Amy shook her head. “It’s okay. I can handle it.”

“Please eat first. You need energy to wait for your sister. Don’t let yourself get sick.”

Amy nodded. “Thanks, Jacob.”

“I’ll go to the registration office first. I want to ask for any information they have regarding Jillian’s operation.” He squeezed her hand. “Eat first. I’ll accompany you later.”

Amy opened the boxes to find Chinese food she liked: stir-fried noodle, beef and broccoli, orange chicken, and wonton soup. She sighed and said, “I’ll put the wonton soup for Jillian. She may be hungry after the surgery.”

Jacob shook his head. “Eat it. I will buy more if Jillian wants it. You need more energy.”

Amy sniffed, but she bit her lower lip to prevent herself from crying again. “Thank you. If you aren’t here, I don’t know what I’d do.”

“It’s what a fiance uses for.” Jacob squeezed Amy’s hand. “Now, eat while all is still hot. I’ll accompany you soon.”

Amy ate the food. Unexpectedly, she could eat a lot. Having so many things she must deal with surely decreased her strength.

When Jacob returned, he gave Amy the receipt. “I have already paid the second surgery bill.”

“But—”

Jacob placed a finger on Amy’s lips, stopping her from protesting. “Please …. You are my fiancee. It’s the least I can do for you.”

Amy burst into tears again. Jacob hugged Amy and patted her back. That was when Jacob’s phone rang.

He clucked his tongue to see the screen. “It’s my mom again.”

“Pick it up. It may be important.”

Jacob let out a tired sigh. “With my mom, it’s always about her commands and demands. But as her only child, what can I do?”

“She loves you. That’s why she did it. I wish I could hear my mom ask me to do something.”

“Alright, I get it. I’ll talk with her now.” Then Jacob walked farther to receive the phone.

“Jacob, finally you picked up the phone. Where are you?” his mother asked.

“I’m at the hospital, Mom. Amy’s sister must go through a second surgery.”

“Hmm … it seems her sister’s situation is bad. Have you heard anything about her future?”

Jacob raised his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“Will Amy be the next CEO of Jewelry Palace? If someone else will be the CEO, you must end your relationship now.”

“Mom, please! It’s not the time to discuss it. I will hang up the phone.”

“Ja—”

He ended the call. Then Jacob’s mother called again, but he ignored it. Until finally, he received a text message.

‘How dare you to end the call?! I haven’t finished talking! What an ungrateful son!’

Jacob let out a heavy sigh. When her mother called him again, he finally picked it up, though he did it reluctantly. “Yes, Mom ….”

“Never end the call again! I didn’t raise you to be an unfilial son!”

“Yes, Mom.”

“Remember what I said. If Amy has been a burden to you, let her go. I have many potential young women you can choose as your future wife.”
