Silence filled the room.

The massive steel door creaked open, exposing the sealed room to the world. A cold breeze rushed in, carrying with it a slight smell of dust, metal and a strange familiarity.

"No. They killed to make sure nobody would ever find out."

Victor Grant chuckled behind them.

“Catherine Ashford.”Aurora whispered. Her actual mother. The woman she had believed to be dead throughout her life. The woman who had ruined two families with her disappearance. And who was somehow linked to the night her parents died.Aurora looked at her husband.“What happened that night?”Alexander looked down at the photo in his hands.“I was sixteen. My parents had been arguing for weeks. My dad was getting strange phone calls and my mum was going missing for hours. I thought they were having issues.Later that night my dad told me he was meeting someone and that he would be back by midnight.Did he say who he was meeting? No, but I do remember him saying Catherine.Aurora gripped the seat. What happened?Alexander swallowed.“I woke up around 2am. There was smoke everywhere and my door was locked. I heard shouting coming from downstairs.Aurora grabbed his hand. When I finally got out I saw the east wing was on fire. One of our security guards was lying by the stairs. He was d

"You’re the reason my mother went missing."Aurora’s words were clear.Alexander was stunned. He stared blankly."You really said that?"Aurora nodded slowly."I should no longer trust you."Alexander’s face set into a hard mask. He wasn’t angry at Aurora but he was looking at the security monitor and saw Victor and the mysterious woman stood outside Blackwood House."She’s trying to create distance between us."Aurora nodded slowly. "Maybe. But how did she know your name? How did she know about your dad?"Alexander took a breath."I don’t know yet but I will find out."Richard made his way over."We need to get out of here now."Ethan looked over at the monitor."It’s too late. They’ve surrounded the whole estate."There was a sharp clank. Then another.Without hesitation Alexander moved in front of Aurora."Move behind me."The silence broke with the sound of gunshots. The glass from the front windows shattered.Ethan returned fire whilst taking cover behind a wooden cabinet. Aurora couldn't tear her eyes away from the screen. She would never have guessed. The words were burning into her brain.Looking back at the birth certificate she hoped she had misread something.Everything remained the same.'Richard?' she whispered.'I don't know everything.'A bitter laugh escaped her lips.'That's right.''Aurora listen to me.''I want you to listen. I have spent my whole life thinking I knew who my parents were. Then I met Catherine. Then I found out that Emily wasn't my biological mother. And now I'm being told I may not even be an Ashford?'Her voice cracked.'Who am I?'Alexander took a step closer.'You're Aurora. None of that changes who you are.'She looked up at him.'Doesn't it?''Yes.'He gently took her hands in his.'You are not defined by a name on a piece of paper or your inheritance. ‘Ask him why he agreed to raise you.’Victor’s voice boomed throughout the observation room.Aurora was frozen. She looked to the man who had held her hand on her first day of school, been there for every birthday and taught her to ride her bike. Her dad.‘Tell me he’s lying.’Richard met her gaze.‘Aurora...’‘Just tell me!’He looked down. That was all she needed.Aurora took a step back. ‘No... you’re joking.’Alexander stepped forwards but Aurora raised her hand. ‘No. I need him to answer.’Richard cleared his throat. ‘I signed the contract.’Something inside Aurora broke.‘Why?’‘Catherine was in danger.’‘So you took her child away?’‘I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.’“You had no right!”Aurora nodded. ‘I know.’‘No! You don’t!’ Her voice cracked. ‘You don’t understand how it feels to find out your whole childhood was based off of decisions made by others!’Tears welled in Richard’s eyes. ‘I never meant to hurt you.’‘You did.’He hung his head.Victor watched the

Aurora couldn’t breathe. She looked at Richard. She hoped to God that he would backtrack his words and give her that bitter laugh that meant he had only been trying to scare her away from the woman standing in the doorway. But he didn’t say anything.Neither did the woman who had just called Aurora sweetheart."Emily?"The woman took a hesitant step forwards."I swear I can explain, sweetheart.""Don’t."Aurora lifted her trembling hand."Don’t call me that."The woman’s face fell.Alexander started to move closer to Aurora. His face was confused. He looked between the woman and Richard."Richard. What the hell is going on?"Richard cleared his throat."This is Emily Whitmore. She brought Aurora up but she isn’t her biological mother."Aurora shook her head."So she isn’t my mother?""No. She isn’t your biological mother.""Then who is?"Richard nodded towards the photo on the table."Catherine Ashford."Aurora closed her eyes.It was a name she recognised but still didn’t know."Why

I've built an empire over the last 25 years. An empire that exists in every place you would trust. Your people won't even know where to start."Ethan fiddled with his ear piece."We've got the top floors secure, but we have interference. Whoever is in charge has access to the internal network."Victor smirked."Of course."Aurora pulled her hand away fro
