Chapter 3

Bagel
Ignoring a furious Kathy, I turned and started to leave.

I had only taken a few steps when she rushed up and grabbed my arm, her voice low. "Simon, you won't even take my money? What's that supposed to mean? Are you trying to burn this bridge for good?"

I looked at her. "Since we broke up a long time ago, we should keep our distance. I don't want my wife to get the wrong idea."

An image of my fiercely protective wife flashed through my mind. Rhea would never tolerate another woman getting this close.

But Kathy clearly misunderstood. She glanced smugly at Nate, who was standing nearby, thinking she had seen through my game of playing hard to get.

"In three days, our group's CEO is hosting a top-tier welcome banquet for the representative from the Weyland Group. I was originally planning to take you and show you what a real high-society circle looks like. But on one condition, you have to get rid of that shabby outfit. I can't be seen with you looking like that."

Before she could finish, I cut her off. "No, thank you."

Being rejected so bluntly again, Kathy's face turned ugly. The hand she had raised stiffly fell back to her side. I could almost hear her grinding her teeth.

"Simon, you've certainly grown a temper, but you still have that cheap, unrefined air about you. It's probably for the best that you don't go. I'll take Nate instead."

Nate's eyes lit up at the prospect of attending such a high-profile banquet. He took Kathy's arm, pledging his loyalty.

"Kathy, don't worry. I'll be on my best behavior. I absolutely won't embarrass you at an event like that."

I had zero interest in their third-rate soap opera. I shook her hand off and walked away, leaving them with one last sentence. "I hope you're all still smiling in three days."

Stepping out of the airport terminal and breathing in the cool, fresh air, my mood finally began to lift.

Five years ago, facing an arranged business marriage forced upon me by my family, I made one last desperate attempt.

I ran to Kathy, my girlfriend of seven years, and begged her to marry me first. As long as we were legally married, my family would be powerless.

Kathy readily agreed. But when I arrived at City Hall, full of hope, I found her standing beside her childhood friend, Nate.

"Nate's son needed legal papers. The only way was for me to marry Nate."

"As soon as the boy's situation is settled, I'll file for divorce and marry you. It will only be a month at most. It's all for the child, so don't overthink it."

Watching Kathy and Nate walk hand in hand into the registry office, my heart died completely for our relationship. That same night, I signed the marriage agreement.

A month later, I had a wedding of the century and became Rhea's husband. In our first year of marriage, we welcomed our eldest son.

Recently, my wife found out she was pregnant with our second child.

If it weren't for her wanting me to take the opportunity to visit my parents and share the good news, I would never have set foot in this city again, let alone run into Kathy and her cronies.

Three days later, I arrived at the welcome banquet alone.

Thanks to the exclusive black card Rhea had arranged for me, I breezed through security. I had cleaned myself up a bit but was still wearing a simple suit.

The moment Kathy saw me, her eyes lit up, and a satisfied smile played on her lips. "So you do want me back after all."

"But if you're trying to win me back by playing hard to get, you could have at least dressed for the occasion. This is a complete embarrassment."

I completely ignored her arrogant tirade and walked straight past her, heading towards the VIP head table at the far end of the hall.

I had only taken two steps when Kathy rushed to block my path. "Simon, did you not hear me talking to you? Our company's seats are over here. Where do you think you're going?"

I forcefully shook off her hand, my voice calm. "That's your seat. My seat is over there."

Following my gaze, Kathy looked towards the most prestigious and heavily guarded head table in the entire ballroom. Her face instantly turned incredibly pale.

Nate, who had been holding court with a glass of champagne among other rich kids, noticed the commotion and pointed at me, shouting, "Simon, how did you get in here?! Did you steal someone's invitation?! Security! And how dare you show up here wearing that fake watch and embarrass yourself?!"

His sharp voice cut through the noise, drawing everyone's attention.

Kathy's once-pretty face was now haggard and drawn.I stared at her warily. "How did you find this place? What do you want?"To have evaded the worldwide net Rhea had cast and bypassed the tight security of this top private hospital to get to my room, she had to be desperate. The image of Nate lunging at us with a fork flashed through my mind. I instantly went on guard, my muscles tensing.Kathy seemed to sense my defensiveness and took an eager step forward. "Simon, don't be afraid. I would never hurt you. I just…"I took a step back and cut her off sharply. "Get to the point.""Simon, the truth is... you're the one I've always loved. These past five years, thinking of you with another woman... it felt like my heart was being torn out!""I know you have feelings for me too. Come with me! Let's leave this place, leave the West Coast, and go somewhere no one knows us and start over, okay?"Though Kathy looked disheveled, like a fugitive who'd been hiding in the sewers for two weeks, I c

I knew Rhea's methods all too well. Nate had crossed a line she would never forgive, and he would spend the rest of his life in prison. To outsiders, Rhea was a cold-blooded queen who would do anything to achieve her goals, but I knew better than anyone that everything she did was for me.She would never allow anyone to harm me or William. I had been seriously injured this time, and I could only imagine how much she was blaming herself.Aaron might have described them as demons from hell, but I wasn't scared. I felt safe.Kathy and her cronies had brought their downfall upon themselves.I had given them a chance to walk away with dignity, but they insisted on taking the path to ruin. However, after hearing Aaron's description, a faint worry still lingered in my heart.William was only five years old. I was a little afraid that growing up under Rhea's extreme, elite-focused education might have a negative impact on his mental health.I was about to discuss child-rearing with Aaron when

Kathy never dreamed that I would humiliate her so thoroughly in front of everyone. She looked at our happy family, her eyes burning with a jealousy so intense it was maddening.Just as she lost her senses and was about to charge towards me, little William, like a brave little knight, spread his arms to block my path and glared at her fiercely. "Get away! Don't you dare look at my daddy with your dirty eyes!""Who do you think you are, telling my daddy to be your bodyguard? My daddy is the king at home. Even my mommy has to listen to him!""I know who you are. You're the woman who broke his heart. And you have a son that isn't his. My daddy only has me and my unborn brother or sister. Your child has no right to be a part of his family.""Someone like you isn't even worthy of carrying my mommy's briefcase. You're not as pretty as her, not as rich as her, and you're definitely not as good to my daddy as she is."Little William shot Kathy a look of utter disgust, scanning her from head to

Meeting their gazes, my heart immediately softened. "Alright, stop scaring the doctor. He hasn't even finished bandaging the wound."The doctor visibly relaxed upon hearing my intervention. After carefully performing a series of checks and confirming that the wound was not serious and there was no risk of infection, he reported respectfully, "Ms. Weyland, the gentleman has only sustained a superficial injury. There is no damage to the bone. Everything is fine.""I will apply the best ointment to his hand. There will be absolutely no scarring."Rhea's tense nerves finally eased a bit, and she nodded slightly. But I could feel her struggling to control her rage.As the oppressive atmosphere in the room grew heavier, the architect of it all, Kathy, swallowed hard. She could never have imagined that the man she once treated with contempt had transformed into someone she could never hope to reach in her lifetime.Watching the natural intimacy between Rhea and me, a wave of intense unwilling

The group of people who had just been fawning over Kathy and showering me with insults heard my words and broke out in a cold sweat, their faces turning ashen. They never dreamed that the man they had mocked and trampled on was the legendary husband doted on by the Weyland heiress. In that moment, fear and regret flooded their minds. But I had been wearing the famous "Heart of Eternity" watch, making my identity clear from the start. They had been blinded by their own arrogance, stupid beyond saving.I watched with cold eyes as they shrank back, trying to hide themselves in the crowd as if they could just slip away unnoticed.Just then, Nate's clueless sycophant, Luke White, suddenly shouted, "Simon, where did you find these two actors? They're actually pretty good-looking. Should I have Nate get them a recommendation to break into the entertainment industry?""You're so broke you can't afford a single nice thing. Did you spend your last dime hiring actors to put on a show?""Come on,

Among this gathering of elites, the impenetrable ice around Rhea, known for her cold and decisive nature, melted the instant she saw me.A rare, incredibly gentle smile crept onto her stunning, cool face.William toddled over on his short legs and threw himself into my arms. But when he saw the cake frosting on my clothes and the blood on my hand, his face went pale. "Daddy! Your hand is bleeding! Who hurt you?!"The moment he yelled "Daddy," the hall fell silent. Everyone turned to look, their faces filled with shock. The same high-society executives who had been sneering at me and looking at me like trash just moments ago were now staring with wide, horrified eyes, as if they had seen a ghost. This child had inherited Rhea's sharp intuition and could always sense when something was wrong with me. His open concern instantly dispelled the gloom that had settled in my chest.I wrapped my arms around his small, soft body and kissed his cheek, gently coaxing him. "Daddy's okay. It's just
