Chapter 6: Birthday

"I-I'm sorry, Dianna." He stopped and faced me. My forehead furrowed as he stepped closer to me.

"Sorry?"

"Dianna, please don't make it a big deal." I felt the weight of my feelings.

"Don't make it a big deal? Lucas, it is a big deal! I can't believe you, for the first time you didn't remember my birthday." I wiped the tears from my cheeks.

"Excuse me, will I be too dramatic if I say that I am in pain today because my husband just forgot that one of the days that is important to me?" He put down the bag and then came closer to me, then he held and gently caressed my hands.

"I'm sorry alright? I just lost my mind because of the amount of work I do at work." My lips trembled, even if I wanted to accept his reason right away, I couldn't because he had already hurt me.

"Is it really just your job, huh, Lucas?" I noticed that he was stunned, but now he touched both of my cheeks.

"O-Of course, Dianna. I just forgot now, didn't I? And I regret that I forgot your birthday. I really do." I met his gaze.

"Hush..."

"I'm sorry, okay? Please?"

"Shit! I can't believe that I forgot it. Go ahead, slap me for forgetting. Please do it, honey." I wiped my cheek.

"Just go, Lucas. Don't you have something important to do at work?"

"But—"

"I'm fine. Go ahead." I diverted my gaze from him.

"Alright then, promise I'll be back." I closed my eyes when he touched me with a kiss on my left cheek and proceeded to leave.

Opening my eyes tears welled up again, but I stopped them by biting my lip.

I just thought that he'll make up for this, but he didn't. Instead, he still goes out for his works, not realizing that I want him to be with me because today's my birthday. I want to spend it with him like before. But I guess it's the first saddest gift I got on my birthday. In an instant, everything I had hoped for this day seemed to have vanished in the wind.

"What, he forgot?!" Chelsea, who has been standing next to me in shock, exclaimed when she saw the state of my face.

"Maybe he's just that busy."

"Huh? What kind of reason is that, Dianna. Come to think of it, he didn't even greet you a simple 'happy birthday'."

"He totally forgot it. And it seems that your husband is insensitive to that part! He actually continued his work, knowing that he made you cry."

"Yeah, but maybe I'm just really making it a big deal, Chelsea. And besides he promised that he will make things right after he fixed all about his work." She laughed so I stared at her.

"And what's funny?"

"Don't you notice your husband, Dianna. He really doesn't have time for you anymore, even the simple important things that are really important in your life, he is no longer aware."

"I'm sure there are others who are concerned about that." I stopped what I was writing.

"Chelsea, that's not true!" The tone of my voice rose slightly.

"Lucas can't do that. I'm fine. I was just carried away by my emotions earlier, but now I understand why he didn't prepare a surprise for me." She took a deep breath.

"Oh, I don't know anymore, Dianna! Take care of that. By the way, happy birthday! I'll just leave my present here." She gave me her gift and went out of my office.

I stared blankly as I was the only one left inside my office again. I still couldn't really accept that I wasn't with Lucas until I thought about it.

I was aware of his recent workload, and it makes me think that going out to celebrate with him seems to be impossible. So, I thought that it would be the perfect chance to have some time with him on her special day and prepared a plan to surprise him at his workplace. It's been a long time since I last went to see him at their company because I also have my own job in one of the branches of my family's businesses.

With a smile on my face, I got out of my car and grabbed the cake and some food that I bought before heading straight here. I imagined how Lucas could be happy by my visit and the effort I had made just to make the day great not only for myself but for both of us.

I walked inside the company, and some staff there greeted me with a smile as I passed them by. We all knew each other, although I noticed most of the people here were new to the firm. Although they still greeted me warmly, especially since I am the wife of their boss, some whispers did not escape my hearing.

"Omg! Maybe Madam already knows."

"Don't make a noise there, maybe we'll get better." I also didn't understand what they meant and if it was for me, that's why I didn't pay attention to it.

I walked inside the company, and some staff there greeted me with a smile as I passed them by. We all knew each other, although most of the people here were new to the firm.

On the hallway, I unintentionally ran into a well-dressed man as I continued looking for my husband's office. I quickly knelt down in order to gather all of the documents that had fallen onto the floor. Once I was done, I picked them up and looked up at him.

"I'm sorry, I didn't notice you," I said and handed him some papers I picked up.

"Oh..."

"No worries, beautiful lady," he said and smiled at me. And I just couldn't deny how good he looked. His blonde hair, tanned skin, and sparkling dark brown eyes made him look nice. He even had a suit that fit him perfectly. Even so, nothing can match how handsome Lucas is to me.
