Elena

The rest of the afternoon dissolved into a blur of black fabric and hollow condolences.

Word of Adrian’s “accident” spread fast—faster than it had in my past life, since this time I wasn’t locked away sobbing in my room for three days before anyone thought to inform the extended family.

By six o’clock, the house was crawling with distant relatives, business associates, and the kind of acquaintances who only appear when there’s a will to be read.

I sat curled on the parlor sofa, an untouched cup of tea gone cold in my hands, playing the role I knew better than anyone in this house: the devastated, devoted wife.

“You poor thing,” an aunt I barely recognized cooed, patting my knee. “Married only five years, and already a widow.”

Five years. She said it so casually, with no idea what those five words actually meant—five years of “vitamins,” five years of a marriage built entirely on my inheritance and my blindness. I smiled weakly at her, letting my lower lip tremble on cue.

“Thank you for coming,” I whispered, my voice cracking exactly where it needed to.

Across the room, my mother-in-law held court like a queen accepting condolences, dabbing at dry eyes with a lace handkerchief that had never once touched actual tears. Every few minutes, her gaze flicked toward me—checking, measuring, making sure I was still playing my part correctly.

I gave her nothing but grief.

Inside, though, something colder was working. While the aunt moved on to my father-in-law, I let my eyes drift around the room, cataloguing.

This house had been my father’s before it was ever “ours.” Every wall, every room, funded almost entirely by the inheritance he left me—and somehow, through paperwork I never thought to question, Adrian’s name was the only one on the deed.

I remembered, vaguely, the way Adrian used to disappear into his study for hours, always locking the door behind him. I never asked why. I was too busy being grateful he trusted me enough to have a “space of his own.”

My mother-in-law’s desk, where she used to disappear with her “medical paperwork,” always waving me off if I offered to help organize it. I’d never questioned that either. Now, knowing what I knew about the rest of them, I wondered how much of that illness had been real at all.

The framed photo on the mantel of Adrian and me on our wedding day, which Vivian was currently standing beside, pretending to admire it with the appropriate amount of sorrow.

She thought she’d already won. That was going to be useful.

“Elena.” Lucas appeared at my side, crouching down to press a glass of amber liquid into my hand. “Drink this. It’ll help settle your nerves.”

My fingers closed around the glass out of pure reflex before my mind caught up. I looked down at the liquid, my pulse spiking.

Whiskey, not milk. Not tonight, then. But the pattern was already starting—the concerned brother-in-law, the helpful drink, the practiced gentleness in his voice. My past life had taught me exactly how this story ended if I let it keep writing itself the same way.

“Thank you, Lucas,” I said sweetly, setting the glass down on the side table without drinking. “I don’t think alcohol will help me think straight tonight. I want to remember everything about today clearly.”

Something flickered behind his eyes—surprise, maybe, that I’d declined. He recovered quickly, flashing me that same warm, trustworthy smile that had fooled me for years.

“Of course,” he said. “Whatever you need.”

Whatever I need. If only he knew.

Roxy, stationed like a bodyguard at the edge of the room, caught my eye from across the crowd. She hadn’t left my side once since we walked through the door, glaring daggers at anyone who got too close, especially Lucas. I gave her the faintest shake of my head—not yet—and she reluctantly stayed put.

As the last of the distant relatives said their goodbyes, Roxy pulled me aside, her grip firm on my arm.

“I don’t like leaving you here,” she muttered, glancing warily toward my mother-in-law. “Say the word and I’m staying the night.”

“I’ll be fine,” I said, squeezing her hand. “I need you rested for tomorrow more than I need you standing guard tonight.”

She didn’t look convinced, but she nodded, pressing a kiss to my cheek before heading for the door. “Call me the second anything feels wrong. I mean it.”

My mother-in-law finally dropped the performance the moment the last car pulled out of the driveway, her sorrowful expression sliding off like a mask she’d grown tired of wearing.

“Well,” she said, stretching her neck with an audible crack. “That’s done. Elena, go rest. We have arrangements to discuss tomorrow.”

Arrangements. The funeral, the will, the paperwork Adrian had no doubt already forged in preparation for his disappearing act.

“Of course, Mother,” I murmured, rising slowly from the sofa. I let my gaze sweep once more across the room—Vivian, still lingering by the mantel, still touching that photograph like she was already planning to replace it.

My father-in-law, checking his watch, impatient to be done grieving for a son who wasn’t even dead. Lucas, watching me with quiet, patient interest.

A slow warmth spread through my chest, entirely different from the grief I’d been performing all evening.

Let them think tonight belonged to them. Tomorrow, and every day after, would belong to me.

“Goodnight, everyone,” I said softly, and walked out of the room without looking back.

I closed my bedroom door behind me and leaned against it, finally letting the grief-stricken mask slip from my face.

Adrian was supposedly dead.

His phone had supposedly burned with him in the crash.

But as I stared down at my own phone, a thought suddenly struck me.

What if it hadn’t?

What if Adrian’s phone was still somewhere in this house?

My fingers tightened around my phone.

There was only one way to find out.

I was going to call my dead husband.

ElenaI woke up feeling completely refreshed.Months had passed since that fateful day of retribution, and my new life had officially begun. I got out of bed, took a warm bath, and dressed in a sharp, tailored suit fitting for the Chairwoman I now was. As I picked up my handbag, my phone screen lit up with a notification:【Good morning! How are you feeling today?】I smiled warmly as I read Roxy’s text. Ever since everything went down, she had made sure to send me a message like this every single morning.【I’m doing wonderful, thank you. Have a great day!】 I typed back before slipping my phone into my purse.I walked down the grand marble staircase, where my new housekeeper greeted me with a polite bow.“Good morning, Chairwoman. Your breakfast is prepared.”“Thank you,” I replied, enjoying a quick, quiet meal before stepping out to my car.It was my original luxury car—the one Adrian thought he had hidden away in his friend’s garage. Kane made sure every single piece of property stole

Elena“I’m sorry! Elena, I’m so sorry!” Adrian suddenly sobbed, reaching out to grab the hem of my dress. He pointed a trembling, bloody finger at Vivian. “It was her! That bitch forced me into this! You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved!”I stared at him with complete disdain. That wasn’t what he said when he stood over my deathbed.“How dare you, Adrian?!” Vivian shrieked, snapping her head toward him. “You were the one who crawled back to me after I divorced my ex! You begged me to take you back! You told me you hated Elena and wanted her dead! You planned all of this, and now you’re blaming me?!”I stood back with my arms crossed, watching the two lovers tear each other to shreds.Idiots.“Lucas!” I called out suddenly. The entire room froze. Adrian, Eleanor, and Vivian all whipped their heads toward the front entrance in panic. After a long silence, I let out a soft laugh. “Oh. He’s not coming. I was the one who handed the evidence to the police and put him behind bars.”Eleanor

Elena“What do you mean?” Adrian stammered from the floor. “Why are you sitting next to him? Get up!”I tilted my head back and laughed. It started as a soft chuckle, then burst into full, hysterical laughter until tears welled in the corners of my eyes. I clutched my stomach, savoring every second of their complete bewilderment.“What the hell is so funny?!” Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking. “You bitch!”My laughter died instantly. I turned a gaze colder than ice onto her. “Bitch? You’re referring to yourself, right?”“How dare you!” she screamed, taking a step back.“Mother,” I called out, my tone dripping with bitter irony. “Didn’t you tell me Vivian was just your distant cousin? How on earth did she end up as Adrian’s mistress?”“I am not a mistress!” Vivian cut in sharply, clutching Adrian’s arm. “I am his wife!”“Then what does that make me?” I asked smoothly.“The unloved one is always the mistress,” she spat back.“I suppose you’re right,” I said casually, inspecting my fin

ElenaBefore Adrian could take another step toward the door, the front entrance was kicked open with a deafening crash.Kane strolled into the foyer, flanked by a dozen burly men armed with iron bars and handguns. The shock on Adrian’s face was pure poetry.“Well, well,” Kane’s low voice echoed off the high ceilings. “Isn’t that Adrian Blackwood? I thought dead men were supposed to stay buried.”Adrian froze, his face draining of color as he instinctively shoved Vivian behind his back. “M-Mr. Kane...”From the shadows near the stairs, a surge of dark triumph rushed through me. Roxy hadn’t failed me after all—she had sent Kane directly to the house to intercept Adrian before he could flee!My phone vibrated silently in my palm. A text from Roxy appeared:【Sorry to keep you waiting! My dad had a sudden emergency, but Kane and his men should be arriving right now. Is he there?】I quickly typed back:【Yes. He just walked in. Thank you for everything—I’ll take it from here.】“Why are you h

Elena“Mother,” Vivian said nervously. “What are you talking about?”Eleanor snapped her head around, glaring at Vivian with cold, vicious hatred. It was the first time Eleanor had ever looked at her like that, and Vivian instinctively took a step back.“Don’t you dare call me mother!” Eleanor hissed. “My son is sitting in a prison cell, and you think I’m going to let you and Adrian live happily ever after?”“I am so sick of this!” Adrian shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. He ripped off his cap and ran a hand through his hair—a habit he always had when he was pushed to the edge.“I told you last time!” Adrian yelled, glaring at Eleanor. “I gave you money to pay off his mess before. I told you if he screwed up again, I wouldn’t lift a finger to help him! You dragged me back here because of that useless loser!”“That ‘loser’ is your brother!” Eleanor cried, her voice cracking. “Your younger brother!”“So what? I can’t do anything for him!” Adrian snapped. “He was caught red-hand

ElenaI sat by my bedroom window long past midnight, watching the driveway for headlights that never came. Adrian didn’t return that night.By the time exhaustion finally dragged me into a shallow, restless sleep, the sky had begun turning gray. I woke a few hours later to the smell of toasted bread and fresh tea drifting up through my door.I dressed slowly and made my way downstairs. Eleanor was waiting at the bottom of the staircase, an apron tied neatly around her waist, a warm smile plastered across her face as if the night before had never happened.“There you are, sweet girl,” she cooed, taking my hands in hers. “I made you breakfast. Come, sit.”She guided me to the table, where a full spread waited—eggs, fresh bread, fruit, a steaming cup of tea.She pulled out my chair herself, fussing over the placement of my napkin like a woman auditioning for the role of a doting mother.“Mother,” I said carefully, sitting down. “Is everything alright?”“I owe you an apology,” she said, l
