Chapter 2

작가: Demure Sparrow
Ryan was struck with horror the moment he entered the tent. He held me up firmly by the waist with one arm and gripped the reins with the other, racing through the gathering dusk.

"I'm heading out first! Kael, Earl, you both follow with the supplies."

After a long, arduous journey, he brought us to a halt beneath the lee side of a cliff to rest. As he lifted me from the mount and removed my protective gear, he caught sight of my joints that were raw, chafed, and bleeding.

Ryan sucked in a sharp breath and immediately stripped off his own fur-lined outer garment to wrap around my wounds.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn. I shouldn't have dismissed your pleas for help as whining."

I asked in a calm voice, "If I hadn't fainted, you'd still have thought I was just being unreasonable, wouldn't you?"

He lowered his head, unable to meet my eyes. He then said, "I would have ridden as fast as I could to make sure you suffered less."

I drifted in and out of unconsciousness, but Ryan never left my side. Every 15 minutes or so, he would offer me a sip of water and readjust my cloak.

By midday, the medicine finally took effect, suppressing the surging, feverish toxins in my blood.

Ryan let out a long, heavy sigh of relief. He plucked a wildflower from nearby and tucked it behind my ear, trying to soothe me.

"Do you remember the first time I carried you on my back to the ice springs when we were still little pups?"

I brushed the petals lightly.

"I remember. You got lost and couldn't even tell which direction to go. We nearly died out there on the snowfields. And when Kael finally found us, you were crying so hard you nearly wet your pants."

I couldn't help but chuckle as I recalled the past. I felt my heart stir, just a little, even though I'd long since steeled it against any further expectations from Ryan and the others.

But just then, a piercing scream from Maya erupted from the woods behind us.

Ryan sprang to his feet instantly, knocking over the cup and spilling water all over my tunic. But he didn't notice a thing. He shot me an anxious look and said, "Wait here for me. I'll go take a look and be right back."

I grabbed his sleeve. "You'll come back, won't you?"

He patted my hand and pulled his sleeve away. "Of course."

With that, he turned and ran toward the woods, vanishing as swiftly as a gust of wind.

I sat in the path of the wind, waiting for him, watching the scorching sun climb higher and higher. It felt as though every drop of moisture in my body was being baked away, and yet, I could hear loud laughter and chatter drifting toward me from the direction of the woods.

It turned out Maya had merely been bitten by a small insect in the grass.

The moment he realized it was a false alarm, Ryan smacked her sharply on the shoulder. "You scared the life out of me!"

I assumed he would return the moment he confirmed Maya was safe, but she just laughed and punched him back, and the two began chasing each other and roughhousing.

Kael and Earl rushed over to break it up, only to be pulled into the fray by Maya, until all of them ended up rolling around on the ground together.

The boisterous noise rang out, filling the air and pouring into my ears.

I wanted to call for help, but I didn't even have the strength to lift a finger.

It wasn't until the sun hung high at its zenith, and Maya mentioned that the waterskin was empty and she needed to fetch more, that the laughter in the woods finally came to an abrupt halt.

Ryan, Kael, and Earl suddenly cried out in unison.

"Evelyn!"

Ryan was the first to dash over, scooping me into his arms.

I had long since curled up in a corner, unable to even open my eyes.

"She's suffering from heatstroke!"

Kael hurriedly shoved some medicine into my mouth while Earl scrambled to fetch water for a cold compress.

After resting for a long while, I finally regained enough strength to ask, "Are we still going to the ice springs?"

This was the last shred of hope I held for them.

"Yes! We're leaving right now!" all three of them answered at once.

I let out a long, relieved breath and began to pull myself up onto my feet.

Just then, Maya pushed aside the branches and stepped out, exclaiming, "I just spotted a red fox! I wounded its tail with a shot. Could you wait a few more minutes? I'll be able to catch it in no time."

  • My Life Risked for Their Passing Whim   Chapter 12

As soon as they returned to the pack, Ryan resigned from his position as Alpha, Kael relinquished his authority over the management of supplies, and Earl closed down his gear shop. The pack Elder, Eli Talbot, asked them what they intended to do. Ryan replied without hesitation, "We're going to build a sanctuary."They sold off all their possessions and poured every cent of their savings into the project. They kept nothing for themselves but a few sets of the most threadbare, worn-out clothes. Every other resource went toward building the sanctuary. The sanctuary was established specifically to take in pups suffering from toxin side effects, those who were frail or weak, and those who had no one to care for them. These pups always reminded them of me back when I was young.I hadn't been able to move about freely because I was plagued by my heat toxin condition. While other pups my age were learning to hunt, I could only huddle on my bed in my room.Whenever the three of them return

Ryan crawled toward me on his knees, reaching out to tug at the hem of my clothes, but I stepped back to avoid him."Ryan, I really thought I was going to die when I was waiting for you under the scorching sun," I said. "Back then, I told myself that if I managed to survive, I would never forgive you all again. Yet, I never seemed to learn my lesson."I lowered my head, letting out a self-deprecating chuckle."That was until fate slapped me in the face two more times. It made me realize that I would surely lose my life if I didn't leave you now."I paused. "See? I was actually foolish enough to risk my very life just for your sake."Ryan was sobbing so hard he could barely stay on his knees. He shook his head frantically, reaching out to grab at me. He apologized over and over."I'm sorry, Evelyn… I'm so sorry. I know that nothing I say now will make a difference. It's all my fault. I deserve to die…""I don't need to hear that anymore," I said, pulling out a map.It was the on

For the first time, Ryan found himself barred from entering the Royal City Sanatorium. The caregiver at the door, Edith Fangster, looked at them apologetically and said, "Ms. Barker has said that she will not see the three of you."Kael hurriedly pulled out everything he owned. "I can donate all of this to the sanatorium! I just want to see her, even if it's only once!Edith shook her head and replied, "This facility doesn't accept private donations, nor would we ever disregard a patient's wishes."Earl's voice trembled with desperation. "Then, can you tell us how she's doing?""Her condition is stable. Of course she's resting comfortably, and no one is here to harm her."Hearing this, Ryan lowered his head in shame, yet a flicker of relief crossed his face. The next moment, he dropped to his knees, and Kael and Earl followed suit.Passersby stopped in their tracks, pointing and whispering among themselves. They were once the three most respected wolves in the pack, but now, th

There were only a few lines on the letter that I wrote before I left.Deep down, I had known the answer all along. I knew that Ryan, Kael, and Earl would choose Maya without hesitation if forced to choose between me and her. I had simply been unwilling to give up and wanted to take one last gamble, hoping they'd still choose me instead. But still, just to be safe, I left this letter behind. If I lost the gamble and ended up leaving the pack, I would ask Leah to deliver this letter to the three of them."I don't blame you for choosing Maya. I only blame myself for being so foolish. Everyone else moved forward, while I stayed exactly where I was, clinging to that vow for ten years. Don't come looking for me."As Ryan finished reading the final word, the letter slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.Earl sank to his knees, picked up the paper, and pressed it against his chest."She doesn't want us anymore," he whimpered.Meanwhile, Kael closed his eyes and remained silent fo

When Ryan, Kael, and Earl rushed back to the pack, Leah was waiting for them at the coffee shop I used to frequent.Ryan pushed the door open, his voice hoarse as he asked, "Where is she?"Kael stepped forward, desperate for an answer. He demanded, "The sanatorium took her, didn't they?"Leah furrowed her brows in disgust, refusing to meet his gaze. "Yes. Someone from the Royal City Sanatorium came to pick her up."Earl's eyes turned bloodshot with agitation. "Why didn't she tell us?"Leah let out a cold, mocking laugh. She shot back, "Are you sure she didn't? She did tell you! She told all of you that she couldn't hold on much longer, that she needed the ice springs, that she needed you! But did any of you ever take her seriously?"You spent the whole time focusing on that she-wolf, Maya, instead. Why aren't you hovering around her now? "Don't you find it disgusting that you only start panicking and regretting everything when someone is on the verge of death? And now, you stil

Outside the waystation, Ryan, Kael, and Earl finally came to their senses now that they knew I wasn't dead.Ryan was the first to stand up, punching Kael in the face. He roared, "Why couldn't your medicine save Evelyn? Why is she still being tormented by the heat toxins to the point of near-death?"Aren't you supposed to be very good at preparing herbs and medications? Do you even remember that you once studied and researched herbs just to cure Evelyn? Tell me! Why are you so fucking useless!"Kael was knocked against the wall, blood trickling from his mouth. He grabbed Ryan's collar and growled back, "What right do you have to ask me that? You were the one who left Evelyn injured by the rocks and played with Maya!"Earl rushed forward, kicking Kael in the stomach. "Well, you were the one insisting that Evelyn's pleas for help were a joke the whole time!"Kael staggered from the blow, but he sneered and retaliated with a punch. "What about you? Didn't you hear Evelyn saying she fe
