Chapter 3

작가: Demure Sparrow
Ryan, Kael, and Earl followed Maya with their gazes, then turned their heads in unison to look at me.

I slowly got back on my feet with Ryan's help. I then said, "We can catch the red fox anytime. Let's head to the ice springs first."

Ryan, however, pursed his lips and urged me otherwise. "A red fox is something we might only see once in a decade. Don't you want to take a look?"

Maya let out an exaggerated sigh. "I knew that nobody would care about my wishes the moment my parents died. Whatever, just forget about it. I'm already content enough having you all come out here with me."

Earl pulled her into his arms, his heart breaking for her. After checking the remaining supplies in the medical kit, Kael made the final call.

"We have enough medicine to last. Let's go after the red fox. We'll make it quick."

I took a deep breath, suppressing the searing pain in my chest, and asked, "And what about me?"

Kael replied with absolute certainty, saying, "Your vital signs are stable right now. A little extra time won't hurt. You'll be fine.

"We've known each other for so long, and this is the first time Maya has actually asked us for something. Of course we have to make it come true."

Earl crouched down in front of me and said, "Hop on. I'll carry you. Can't have our little princess getting tired, can we?"

It was clear they had already made up their minds. I wouldn't be able to change anything, no matter how much I tried arguing with them.

So, I gave in and said, "We must head to the ice springs by this evening at the latest."

The pain in my body was intensifying, and I couldn't hold on much longer.

"Fine. Whatever you say," the three of them said at once, eager to move on.

At first, Earl walked with a steady, even pace. But Maya kept darting in front of him, taunting, "You're slower than a snail! Isn't it a drag, carrying someone on your back like that?"

Earl ignored her at first, but as her mockery grew more brazen, he found himself picking up the pace. Eventually, he dashed so quickly that the jolting intensified until my already frail body felt like it was about to fall apart.

"Slow down!" I cried out.

However, he didn't seem to hear me anymore. All he cared about was catching up to Maya, who was running faster and faster. I could only struggle as I slid downward.

"Put me down!"

It seemed like Earl only just realized that I was riding on his back then. He pursed his lips to apologize. But before he could finish his sentence, Maya laughed and pulled him away.

The group moved on with Maya at its center, while I trailed slowly at the very back.

Suddenly, a sharp, jagged stone tore through the sole of my shoe and sliced into the arch of my foot. I was overcome by a searing, intense pain, and I collapsed to the ground.

"Evelyn! Are you hurt?"

They stopped up ahead, and Kael hurried over to apply some medicine to my wound, but he froze the moment he opened his kit.

All the supplies for treating external wounds had been used up when Maya was bitten by the insect back then. Or, more accurately, they had been wasted away while they were fooling around and playfully applying them to one another.

Pressing my hand against the wound, which was still oozing blood, I looked up at Kael and said, "I hope you had a good time, at least."

He was left speechless.

Ryan sighed next to him before turning around and dashing toward a distant patch of thorny, herb-filled undergrowth. About 15 minutes later, he returned, covered in cuts and scratches and clutching a bundle of hemostatic herbs.

He gently applied the herbs to my wound.

"I'm sorry, Evelyn."

Seeing a wooden splinter embedded in one of his own cuts, I couldn't help but reach out and pull it free.

Ryan's eyes turned red in an instant.

He asked me in a soft, quiet voice, "Evelyn, do you wanna go and see the aurora borealis after you're done soaking in the ice springs?"

As soon as they returned to the pack, Ryan resigned from his position as Alpha, Kael relinquished his authority over the management of supplies, and Earl closed down his gear shop. The pack Elder, Eli Talbot, asked them what they intended to do. Ryan replied without hesitation, "We're going to build a sanctuary."They sold off all their possessions and poured every cent of their savings into the project. They kept nothing for themselves but a few sets of the most threadbare, worn-out clothes. Every other resource went toward building the sanctuary. The sanctuary was established specifically to take in pups suffering from toxin side effects, those who were frail or weak, and those who had no one to care for them. These pups always reminded them of me back when I was young.I hadn't been able to move about freely because I was plagued by my heat toxin condition. While other pups my age were learning to hunt, I could only huddle on my bed in my room.Whenever the three of them return

Ryan crawled toward me on his knees, reaching out to tug at the hem of my clothes, but I stepped back to avoid him."Ryan, I really thought I was going to die when I was waiting for you under the scorching sun," I said. "Back then, I told myself that if I managed to survive, I would never forgive you all again. Yet, I never seemed to learn my lesson."I lowered my head, letting out a self-deprecating chuckle."That was until fate slapped me in the face two more times. It made me realize that I would surely lose my life if I didn't leave you now."I paused. "See? I was actually foolish enough to risk my very life just for your sake."Ryan was sobbing so hard he could barely stay on his knees. He shook his head frantically, reaching out to grab at me. He apologized over and over."I'm sorry, Evelyn… I'm so sorry. I know that nothing I say now will make a difference. It's all my fault. I deserve to die…""I don't need to hear that anymore," I said, pulling out a map.It was the on

For the first time, Ryan found himself barred from entering the Royal City Sanatorium. The caregiver at the door, Edith Fangster, looked at them apologetically and said, "Ms. Barker has said that she will not see the three of you."Kael hurriedly pulled out everything he owned. "I can donate all of this to the sanatorium! I just want to see her, even if it's only once!Edith shook her head and replied, "This facility doesn't accept private donations, nor would we ever disregard a patient's wishes."Earl's voice trembled with desperation. "Then, can you tell us how she's doing?""Her condition is stable. Of course she's resting comfortably, and no one is here to harm her."Hearing this, Ryan lowered his head in shame, yet a flicker of relief crossed his face. The next moment, he dropped to his knees, and Kael and Earl followed suit.Passersby stopped in their tracks, pointing and whispering among themselves. They were once the three most respected wolves in the pack, but now, th

There were only a few lines on the letter that I wrote before I left.Deep down, I had known the answer all along. I knew that Ryan, Kael, and Earl would choose Maya without hesitation if forced to choose between me and her. I had simply been unwilling to give up and wanted to take one last gamble, hoping they'd still choose me instead. But still, just to be safe, I left this letter behind. If I lost the gamble and ended up leaving the pack, I would ask Leah to deliver this letter to the three of them."I don't blame you for choosing Maya. I only blame myself for being so foolish. Everyone else moved forward, while I stayed exactly where I was, clinging to that vow for ten years. Don't come looking for me."As Ryan finished reading the final word, the letter slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.Earl sank to his knees, picked up the paper, and pressed it against his chest."She doesn't want us anymore," he whimpered.Meanwhile, Kael closed his eyes and remained silent fo

When Ryan, Kael, and Earl rushed back to the pack, Leah was waiting for them at the coffee shop I used to frequent.Ryan pushed the door open, his voice hoarse as he asked, "Where is she?"Kael stepped forward, desperate for an answer. He demanded, "The sanatorium took her, didn't they?"Leah furrowed her brows in disgust, refusing to meet his gaze. "Yes. Someone from the Royal City Sanatorium came to pick her up."Earl's eyes turned bloodshot with agitation. "Why didn't she tell us?"Leah let out a cold, mocking laugh. She shot back, "Are you sure she didn't? She did tell you! She told all of you that she couldn't hold on much longer, that she needed the ice springs, that she needed you! But did any of you ever take her seriously?"You spent the whole time focusing on that she-wolf, Maya, instead. Why aren't you hovering around her now? "Don't you find it disgusting that you only start panicking and regretting everything when someone is on the verge of death? And now, you stil

Outside the waystation, Ryan, Kael, and Earl finally came to their senses now that they knew I wasn't dead.Ryan was the first to stand up, punching Kael in the face. He roared, "Why couldn't your medicine save Evelyn? Why is she still being tormented by the heat toxins to the point of near-death?"Aren't you supposed to be very good at preparing herbs and medications? Do you even remember that you once studied and researched herbs just to cure Evelyn? Tell me! Why are you so fucking useless!"Kael was knocked against the wall, blood trickling from his mouth. He grabbed Ryan's collar and growled back, "What right do you have to ask me that? You were the one who left Evelyn injured by the rocks and played with Maya!"Earl rushed forward, kicking Kael in the stomach. "Well, you were the one insisting that Evelyn's pleas for help were a joke the whole time!"Kael staggered from the blow, but he sneered and retaliated with a punch. "What about you? Didn't you hear Evelyn saying she fe
