Chapter 4

작가: Demure Sparrow
I felt my heart stirring in my chest.

I had longed to see the aurora borealis since my first visit to the ice springs, but every time we came, our visit never aligned with the days the aurora appeared. And since I hadn't fully recovered, I couldn't stay in the northern pole for long.

So, Ryan, Kael, and Earl made a pact with me. They said that they would accompany me to the northern pole and wait until the aurora finally revealed itself once I was completely healthy and recovered.

Earl and Kael leaned in, chiming, "This time, we'll build an igloo there and stay with you for as long as you want!"

I remained silent, my thoughts drifting to the very last dose of my specialized suppressant.

If I took it tomorrow night, I would have enough strength to make it to the northern pole and arrive just in time for the final day the ice springs were open to the public. Perhaps, if things turned out well, I wouldn't have to go to the sanatorium after all.

Maybe, then, I would be able to return to those good old days we once shared together.

Just then, Maya leaned closer and said, "What a pity I'm just not lucky enough to travel so far and see the world."

"Why don't you come along with us? It'll be more fun with more people around. The more the merrier!" Ryan said decisively, leaving me no room to refuse.

Noticing my silence, Kael reassured me gently, "Don't worry. This is a special trip just for the four of us. You'll be the center of our attention then."

Still, I gnawed on my lip, unsure whether I should believe him.

For the rest of the journey, the three of them went on and on, describing the splendor of the aurora to Maya, until Ryan let something slip amidst his excitement.

"We can even have a snowball fight with Maya when we're there! We won't have to spend the whole night stuck in an igloo watching over Evelyn and be bored to our deaths!"

As the words left his lips, a heavy silence fell over the campfire.

Ryan's expression stiffened the moment he realized what he just said, and he scrambled to explain himself.

"I-I was just joking…"

"No need to explain. I understand exactly what you meant," I said, quietly folding the map on which I'd been making notes.

Earl stepped in, trying to smooth things over. "We can all have a snowball fight together once Evelyn has recovered."

I simply retorted, "Have you all forgotten? If I exerted myself right after soaking in the ice springs, my heat toxin would just flare up again."

For the past nine years, whenever I emerged from the ice spring, they wouldn't even let me lift a finger for fear of triggering my symptoms again. If I wanted something done, I just had to tell them about it, and they'd have it done for me in no time.

But this time, Kael's expression darkened as he chided me.

"Must you always be such a killjoy?"

Maya stepped in to break up the argument, handing me a skewer of grilled meat with a bright smile on her face.

"Oh, come on! Isn't it enough that I'll be there to join in the snowball fight? Let's eat first!"

I took the skewer from her and saw that the meat was completely raw and still streaked with blood. Since consuming raw food would only accelerate the onset of the heat toxin, I handed the skewer back.

"You all go ahead and enjoy dinner."

Maya scratched her head with a sheepish look on her face. "Sorry, my bad. I've always just made do like this my whole life. I didn't realize you were so fragile and delicate, unlike me."

Kael chuckled disdainfully and said, "Just leave her be. She's just throwing a tantrum, trying to make things difficult for you on purpose."

The four of them walked off toward the other side of the campfire, leaving me behind by myself.

Before bed, I began packing my things for my departure the next day. Suddenly, Ryan, Kael, and Earl appeared before me rather awkwardly and hesitantly to apologize to me.

"Sorry for being so harsh with you tonight. We'll head to the ice springs first thing tomorrow morning."

"Is Maya coming too?" I asked.

They all fell silent, eyes cast downward.

As soon as they left, I took my last dose of suppressant. Then, I sent my coordinates to the Royal City Sanatorium, instructing them to come and pick me up immediately.

However, this time, the effects of the specialized medicine wore off unusually fast. By daybreak, the heat toxin had completely flared up, and a metallic, sweet taste surged in my throat. I began coughing up blood.

I cried out for help, but there was only the sound of the howling wind outside the tent.

I managed to pull myself into a sitting position and spotted a note lying on the table. It read, "The red fox that Maya wounded just showed up again. It won't get far since it's about to die, so we're going to go and catch it. We'll be back soon."

These were the same people who apologized to me last night and promised to bring me to the ice springs as soon as possible. And yet, they were also the ones who left me all alone at the campsite.

As I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth, a commotion stirred outside the tent.

It was the vehicle from the Royal City Sanatorium, coming to pick me up. So, I hurriedly gathered a few items of clothing and departed the wilderness with them.

…

At noon, Ryan, Kael, Earl, and Maya finally returned to the campsite, full of excitement.

Ryan burst into my tent, carrying a live red fox with its limbs all bound up. He exclaimed, "Evelyn! We caught a little fox to keep you company on the way so you won't get bored—"

However, his joyful voice cut off abruptly.

The tent was empty, the bedding had long since grown cold, and all my belongings were gone. Only a stark, dried, and blackened pool of blood remained on the rug in the center of the tent.

As soon as they returned to the pack, Ryan resigned from his position as Alpha, Kael relinquished his authority over the management of supplies, and Earl closed down his gear shop. The pack Elder, Eli Talbot, asked them what they intended to do. Ryan replied without hesitation, "We're going to build a sanctuary."They sold off all their possessions and poured every cent of their savings into the project. They kept nothing for themselves but a few sets of the most threadbare, worn-out clothes. Every other resource went toward building the sanctuary. The sanctuary was established specifically to take in pups suffering from toxin side effects, those who were frail or weak, and those who had no one to care for them. These pups always reminded them of me back when I was young.I hadn't been able to move about freely because I was plagued by my heat toxin condition. While other pups my age were learning to hunt, I could only huddle on my bed in my room.Whenever the three of them return

Ryan crawled toward me on his knees, reaching out to tug at the hem of my clothes, but I stepped back to avoid him."Ryan, I really thought I was going to die when I was waiting for you under the scorching sun," I said. "Back then, I told myself that if I managed to survive, I would never forgive you all again. Yet, I never seemed to learn my lesson."I lowered my head, letting out a self-deprecating chuckle."That was until fate slapped me in the face two more times. It made me realize that I would surely lose my life if I didn't leave you now."I paused. "See? I was actually foolish enough to risk my very life just for your sake."Ryan was sobbing so hard he could barely stay on his knees. He shook his head frantically, reaching out to grab at me. He apologized over and over."I'm sorry, Evelyn… I'm so sorry. I know that nothing I say now will make a difference. It's all my fault. I deserve to die…""I don't need to hear that anymore," I said, pulling out a map.It was the on

For the first time, Ryan found himself barred from entering the Royal City Sanatorium. The caregiver at the door, Edith Fangster, looked at them apologetically and said, "Ms. Barker has said that she will not see the three of you."Kael hurriedly pulled out everything he owned. "I can donate all of this to the sanatorium! I just want to see her, even if it's only once!Edith shook her head and replied, "This facility doesn't accept private donations, nor would we ever disregard a patient's wishes."Earl's voice trembled with desperation. "Then, can you tell us how she's doing?""Her condition is stable. Of course she's resting comfortably, and no one is here to harm her."Hearing this, Ryan lowered his head in shame, yet a flicker of relief crossed his face. The next moment, he dropped to his knees, and Kael and Earl followed suit.Passersby stopped in their tracks, pointing and whispering among themselves. They were once the three most respected wolves in the pack, but now, th

There were only a few lines on the letter that I wrote before I left.Deep down, I had known the answer all along. I knew that Ryan, Kael, and Earl would choose Maya without hesitation if forced to choose between me and her. I had simply been unwilling to give up and wanted to take one last gamble, hoping they'd still choose me instead. But still, just to be safe, I left this letter behind. If I lost the gamble and ended up leaving the pack, I would ask Leah to deliver this letter to the three of them."I don't blame you for choosing Maya. I only blame myself for being so foolish. Everyone else moved forward, while I stayed exactly where I was, clinging to that vow for ten years. Don't come looking for me."As Ryan finished reading the final word, the letter slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.Earl sank to his knees, picked up the paper, and pressed it against his chest."She doesn't want us anymore," he whimpered.Meanwhile, Kael closed his eyes and remained silent fo

When Ryan, Kael, and Earl rushed back to the pack, Leah was waiting for them at the coffee shop I used to frequent.Ryan pushed the door open, his voice hoarse as he asked, "Where is she?"Kael stepped forward, desperate for an answer. He demanded, "The sanatorium took her, didn't they?"Leah furrowed her brows in disgust, refusing to meet his gaze. "Yes. Someone from the Royal City Sanatorium came to pick her up."Earl's eyes turned bloodshot with agitation. "Why didn't she tell us?"Leah let out a cold, mocking laugh. She shot back, "Are you sure she didn't? She did tell you! She told all of you that she couldn't hold on much longer, that she needed the ice springs, that she needed you! But did any of you ever take her seriously?"You spent the whole time focusing on that she-wolf, Maya, instead. Why aren't you hovering around her now? "Don't you find it disgusting that you only start panicking and regretting everything when someone is on the verge of death? And now, you stil

Outside the waystation, Ryan, Kael, and Earl finally came to their senses now that they knew I wasn't dead.Ryan was the first to stand up, punching Kael in the face. He roared, "Why couldn't your medicine save Evelyn? Why is she still being tormented by the heat toxins to the point of near-death?"Aren't you supposed to be very good at preparing herbs and medications? Do you even remember that you once studied and researched herbs just to cure Evelyn? Tell me! Why are you so fucking useless!"Kael was knocked against the wall, blood trickling from his mouth. He grabbed Ryan's collar and growled back, "What right do you have to ask me that? You were the one who left Evelyn injured by the rocks and played with Maya!"Earl rushed forward, kicking Kael in the stomach. "Well, you were the one insisting that Evelyn's pleas for help were a joke the whole time!"Kael staggered from the blow, but he sneered and retaliated with a punch. "What about you? Didn't you hear Evelyn saying she fe
