Abby did not have an idea of how long she passed out or how did she even manage to reach the riverbank in the first place, knowing that she did not know how to swim.
The rain had long gone now but the grasses, as well as the soil below her, were still moist. A black trench coat was wrapped around her body to protect her from the cold night draft.
Checking herself for any casualties, Abby heaved a sigh of relief when she found none. She thought that she would really die for good back then but thanks heaven, that she did not.
Or did she????
When that thought crossed Abby's mind, she immediately checked herself again. This time, however, she deliberately stopped herself from breathing for a minute or two. Only when she felt that her lungs were still desperately craving for oxygen did she confirmed to herself that she was still alive and kicking.
Abby was just about to knock on the door when she saw something at the corner of her eyes."MADE FOR HIRE"She read the words written on the placard that was hung at the wooden door."Ohh??? Was it not an act called serendipity??? I am currently in search of a place to stay and this opportunity presented itself to me. Maybe this is the turning point of my life. I should have to give this one a try."'EHEM'Abby deliberately cleared her throat first as soon as she reached the entrance of the old mansion. Then after that, she knocked softly against its wooden door to announce her presence."Excuse me, is there anybody home? I wish to return something from a guy named Eugene and it was said in his ID card that th
"Stay right there."The same man commanded with so much authority in his voice to the point that even the panic-stricken Abby was made to comply. She heard footsteps and based on its sound, the other party was already getting near her, yet she remained frozen on the spot. She could not even move a finger at the moment, let alone her head to look at the direction of the man who was approaching her.For some unknown reason, Abby was scared stiff as a stone."Who are you and who brought you here???"The manly voice once again echoed within the darkness. His voice sounded psychedelic yet at the same time, it also had its own sense of appeal that could convince one to listen to his voice over and over again.Even Abby found it hard to deny that if she would ever be given a chance to listen to the other party's voice, she would gladly do so.
Obviously, the other party was no other than, Eugene himself. The same warlock, who together with his pet cat, Jorah, chose to live amongst the non-magic human. He wondered how the other party managed to track him down and what more was that she even managed to read those inscriptions written in ancient Marcellian calligraphy. The other party surely caught his attention this time, and since he was also currently in need of an assistant, he decided to give Abby a chance.However..."Get away from me! You freak!!!"Abby shoved him away as soon as she regained her footing but because of her abrupt action, she fell on her feet."What a clumsy, young lady."
Abby ran around the place like a headless chicken and Eugene did not stop her, he just let her did as she pleased since she would not get far from him anyway. There was no way she could escape him, the room was surrounded with nothing but walls and without his enchantment, no one would be able to leave the place.Meanwhile, Abby desperately felt in the dark. She convinced herself that the exit was somewhere within those walls."HEEEEEELLLLLPPP!"She screamed until her voice already turned coarse. But obviously no one would be able to hear her.Tears started to strea
"What about him?"Abby asked while looking at Jorah's direction. The cat sure was cute but the fact that it possessed a human voice and could actually speak was what bothered Abby the most. There was no way an ordinary cat could talk!"My name is Jorah. I am a cat, obviously?"Jorah replied to Abby while at the same time rubbing his body affectionately against his master's leg.Meanwhile, seeing the disbelief in Abby's eyes, Eugene picked up his cat and then explained at Abby afterward."Jorah used to be an ordinary tomcat, just like the others, but since he was now my pet, I gave him an upgrade. After all, what is my magic for?"Eugene said with a shrug."And you are???"Abby asked because the other party already introduced his cat but not him
"Look... It was not that I did not want to accept the job. To be honest with you, I actually badly need one. But, is there really a need for me to sign this blood contract???"Abby's face subconsciously twitched when she mentioned the word blood."Of course??? Because that is what would bind us. I don't trust words alone. Especially if it was uttered by a mere mortal. I've seen a lot of people who did not honor their words and break their oaths in the past.""But-----"Abby hesitated but Eugene finished her sentence off."But you are thinking you could be actually signing a death sentence.""Err... Quite close to that."Abby admitted, then she reasoned out."Who knows if this contract was actually about me selling my soul or something to the demon?"
Abby was just about to heave a sigh of relief when she suddenly heard Eugene issued a command."Jorah, the dagger.""Wait?! What was the dagger for? I thought---"Abby asked with a quivering voice as dread started to cloud her features. She eyed the cat warily as it handed Eugene a dagger.Meanwhile, seeing her reaction, Eugene only flashed her a smirk."Relax.""Relax you say? Go and try hearing that from a complete stranger holding a dagger before your eyes and tell me if you could calm down despite that."That was what Abby wanted to say but she no longer had the courage to do so. Instead, she backed up at the corner and watched what was about to happen next.Eugene, on the other hand, chose not to speak anymore and with
"So.. what about now? I mean, now that I am done signing the contract, what would be the next?"Abby probed. It was not that she was excited or anything else but she just wanted for all of it to be over."Just wait and see."
