Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
"Great news! That damn old hag I married has cervical cancer and isn't long for this world! We can finally be together, Irie!" my husband, Leonard Ziegler, exclaimed excitedly into his phone from outside the entrance.

I broke out into cold sweat from where I'd overheard him in a corner of the corridor.

I'd gotten off work early to drop by the hospital and pick up my sister-in-law Cynthia Ziegler's physical examination report.

My heart ached fiercely at the words "mid-stage cervical cancer" printed in large letters on the report.

After returning home, I hesitated to head upstairs. Instead, I squatted in a corner and sent an electronic copy of the report to a doctor from another hospital, David Williams, while sighing to myself.

The probability of curing cervical cancer was relatively high so long as it hadn't progressed to an advanced stage.

Early-stage treatment costs were also very low, but Cynthia's condition had to have already progressed to the middle stage. The surgery costs alone would be at least two to three hundred thousand dollars, not including the additional expenses for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and other treatments.

David also suggested that Cynthia return to the hospital for a second opinion.

If she were to seek treatment, we simply didn't have enough liquid capital at home to afford it. Leonard and I would have to sell off our matrimonial home.

If she were to refuse treatment, Leonard and my mother-in-law, Amanda Powell, would definitely raise objections.

Cynthia was born a posthumous child, arriving after the death of her father and my father-in-law, Graham Ziegler. Amanda had also conceived her very late in life.

Amanda always felt that Graham had been reincarnated as Cynthia, so both she and Leonard doted on Cynthia very much.

Just as I was feeling lost as to how to break the news, I received a text message from Leonard.

"I've seen the correspondence and electronic report on your computer, honey. Please don't act impulsively. I've already deleted the doctor you consulted from your contacts list. My mother has already come up with a way to extend your life!"

While I was still stunned and confused, Amanda called me as well. "Come back quickly, Vicky. Hospitals are all shady places filled with people who are just out for your money. After all, there's no cure for cancer.

"Please don't panic and waste your money on fruitless efforts. Once you come back, we'll all think of a solution together."

It was only after listening to what Amanda said that I realized she and Leonard thought I was the one with cancer.

In addition, it sounded like neither of them intended to let me seek treatment.

A second later, Leonard stepped into the corridor in high spirits with his phone. "Fortunately, you were smart and purchased a huge insurance policy for this old hag in advance, baby. This is great! Even the gods are smiling upon us!

"I don't even have to do anything myself now! Once our child is born, they'll be set for life, Irie! We'll soon be enjoying easy lives!"

Due to how quiet the corridor was, I could even hear the delicate voice of the woman on the other end of the call. "You're the best, honey! I'll definitely give birth to a plump, healthy child for you!"

I covered my mouth, feeling a chill run down my spine at what I'd heard.

I'd been married to Leonard for five years, and I'd dismissed all of my family's objections to me marrying him back then. Despite that, he'd conceived a child with another woman and had even plotted to kill me!

When Leonard, Cynthia, and Irene Ludlow heard what I said, they all froze in place, stunned.None of them expected me to swear, given that I was usually so meek and submissive.Leonard was the first to recover. He charged at me, intending to lash out at me. "You damn bitch! You lied to me! Give me back my money! I'm going to beat you to death!"In the end, he didn't manage to lay his finger on me. The bodyguards who'd been watching from outside the room the whole time rushed in and restrained him in a flash. Pinned to the floor like that, he looked no different from a pitiful stray. When Amanda, who'd just returned from picking up medicine, saw this scene, she panicked as well. She rushed over to me and pulled at my hair, shouting, "You bitch! How dare you hit my son! I'm going to rip your face apart!"At the end of the day, Amanda was used to a pampered life. Coupled with her old age, she was extremely inflexible.I turned slightly to the side, causing her to miss me. Then, i

Leonard and I filed for divorce five days later. The Zieglers lived in an old house left behind by Graham, which I neither wanted nor cared for. However, the money was rightfully mine, so I had to come up with a valid reason to get it into an account under my name as soon as possible.I soon found a perfect method for transferring our marital assets.I contacted a friend who made cakes in advance and bought some desserts at an exorbitant price, then had them delivered to Cynthia in the Ziegler residence as takeout.Cynthia happily hid in her room and ate the desserts on the sly, afraid that Amanda and Leonard would find out about them.In just a few days, her face was covered with acne, and she'd gained a dozen pounds. Her memory was also deteriorating, and she would sometimes forget to flush after using the toilet. I noticed an abnormal amount of bleeding in her urine and knew that she didn't have long left to live.…The day finally came for Leonard and me to receive our divo

In addition to cervical cancer, Cynthia also had severe bulimia and alcohol addiction. Her father, Graham, had a fondness for drinking and eating meat, so Amanda and Leonard saw Cynthia as his reincarnation. They insisted she eat rich, meat-heavy meals from childhood, which led to her developing a host of unhealthy eating habits. She'd only seen a bit of relief after I married into the Ziegler family and started consciously managing her eating habits. However, after Amanda realized Cynthia could no longer eat as much as before I joined the family, she began spreading rumors that I was bad luck. She made it so that I was unable to face our neighbors properly.I'd certainly like to see who exactly brought the bad luck now! After dinner, Amanda and I discussed the situation for a while.I offered to sell our house and car to scrounge up a bit of money to buy Uncle Andrew a Patek Philippe watch. Leonard's head shook vigorously in disagreement when he heard this. "That won't do! I

Amanda elaborated, "Here, Vicky. Take this. This bank card contains some funeral expenses I saved up for you—as much as 50,000 dollars. The password is written down on this piece of paper."Since we urgently need this money right now, take it and buy your uncle some nice things with the money at the shopping mall next door, Vicky."Funeral expenses that Amanda had saved up?I almost laughed out loud at that. The Zieglers were really taking me for a fool. This money came from monetary gifts given by my friends back when Leonard and I got married. Amanda had taken it all for herself, only to now present it as funeral expenses. Was this my cue to praise her as an all-knowing prophet and the best mother-in-law in the world? She was dreaming if she thought this meager sum was enough to win Uncle Andrew's favor! She was better off using this money to buy Cynthia a couple more of the latest accessories so the latter could die a little happier.I calmed myself down and cleared my throa

I suppressed my disgust and continued to lead the conversation on. "Having a statue made and a shrine built would be very expensive, though. Where would we get so much money?"Amanda was no slouch either. She had even more petty, dirty tricks up her sleeve than Cynthia did. Sure enough, she immediately pulled me down to sit next to her and feigned an air of mystery. "I heard that after your parents died, it was your uncle on your mother's side who raised you, right? He was a company president or something, wasn't he? I heard his company will be going public soon!"I also heard that he treated you very well back then. He made sure you had the best food, clothing, and education available. I even remember you mentioning just now that he's still unmarried and has nobody to take care of him in his old age."Although I didn't know where Amanda had heard all that information from, she was certainly correct. After my parents died, I'd been raised by my wealthy uncle, Andrew Lowry.Uncle A

"You know, Victoria, there's an old saying that goes, 'The sooner one dies, the sooner one is freed from the pain of living. Death is the true blessing," Cynthia said sagely. She wasn't a very learned person, but she'd certainly picked up a great deal of preposterous logic from Amanda.Seeing my lack of reaction, Amanda added, "That's right. Leo simply doesn't want to be apart from you, which is why he lost his temper out of frustration and helplessness. We're all family, so there's no such thing as one of us being a burden on the rest!"I argued bluntly, "Since death is such a good thing, then you should let Leonard die with me. We can be a couple in death and not suffer in the world of the living anymore!""How dare you curse me, you damn bitch?" bellowed Leonard.I'd set him off again.Just as he was going to charge at me with a slipper to beat me with, Amanda surprisingly slapped him in the face."You useless fool! I've raised you in vain all these years! You can't hit your
