Chapter 2

작가: Lyra
After a night curled up on the foldout couch, I woke with a stiff back and aching shoulders.

The kitchen was already busy.

Mom was frying broccoli. Connor sat at the table on his phone, while Jasmine fixed her hair in the full-length living room mirror.

I’d barely got up from the couch when Mom spoke without turning around.

“There’s cereal and milk in the fridge. Get yourself something if you’re hungry.”

There were only four breakfasts on the table.

Buttered toast for Dad, an omelet for Connor, a chicken sandwich for Jasmine, and a blueberry tart for Mom. Everyone’s favorite.

Nothing for me.

I opened my mouth to tell her the foldout couch was uncomfortable.

Then I looked at those four plates and changed my mind.

What was the point? She hadn’t even thought to make me breakfast. Why would she care how I’d slept?

“Mom, are there any eggs left?”

“In the fridge. Cook some yourself. I’m busy.”

Connor glanced up between bites of his omelet.

“Abby, how much longer are you staying?”

“Jasmine needs the living room to practice. Your couch is in the way.”

I stared at him in shock.

“But I just got here.”

He looked back at his phone.

“I’m just asking. I’m not kicking you out. Why are you looking at me like that?”

Mom brought over the broccoli and gave him a light pat on the head.

“Enough. Eat your breakfast. Abby just got home. Leave her alone.”

Then she turned to me.

“But Jasmine does have another dance competition coming up. She needs room to practice. Clear your things out of the living room today so she can use it.”

“Where am I supposed to sleep?”

“Move a few things in the storage room. There’s enough space for the foldout couch. You can sleep in there.”

I’d been starving a moment ago. Now I had no appetite at all.

After breakfast, Dad picked up his jacket. He stopped by the table on his way out.

“Your mom said you wanted to talk to us last night. What about?”

I set down my cup.

“I wanted to tell you I’m going to Silverfrost Pack……”

“We can’t hear you. Tell us later. Your dad has patrol.”

Mom cut me off and handed him his lunch bag.

I froze. Only then did I notice how loud everything was.

Connor was playing a game on his phone with the sound turned up. Beside him, Jasmine kept asking Dad to watch her new dance steps.

There was noise everywhere. No one was listening to me.

Dad gave Jasmine some attention before turning back to me.

“We’ll talk when I get home.”

That morning, I sorted my clothes in the living room while Mom talked to our neighbor, Mrs. Hollis, on the porch.

They’d left the door partly open. I could hear every word.

“Abby had her awakening yesterday, didn’t she? How did it go?”

“Fine, I suppose. She hasn’t mentioned any problems.”

“What’s she planning to do? Join the patrol?”

“I don’t know. Things have been so busy, I haven’t had a chance to ask. She never tells us anything.”

Mrs. Hollis lowered her voice.

“Well, she’s an adult now. She ought to find something to do. Otherwise, let me tell you—”

“Oh, she won’t sit around. She’s always been like that. Never liked being at home.”

For a moment, I wanted to open the door and tell Mom the truth.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like being home. There had never been a place for me here.

I was the extra person no one noticed.

Then Mom’s phone rang, cutting through my thoughts.

She usually took calls on speaker, and I could make out Connor’s teacher on the other end.

After just a few words, she rushed inside for her bag.

She remembered to speak to me as she passed.

“Connor got into a fight. I have to go sort it out.”

“Have yesterday’s chicken for lunch. And wash Jasmine’s dress. She spilled juice on it this morning.”

Before I could answer, she slammed the door behind her.

Opened shopping bags littered Jasmine’s floor. Clothes she’d tried on covered half the bed.

The dress lay across the back of a chair. Its tag was still attached.

I picked it up and checked the price. It cost twice my monthly allowance.

The orange juice on the skirt was still wet. It left my hand sticky.

My phone buzzed as I put the dress in the washer.

Someone had posted a video in the new warrior group chat.

Several warriors were practicing hand-to-hand combat on Silverfrost Pack’s training grounds. Beyond them stretched a pine forest. The border patrol had just changed shifts.

A she-wolf named Greer sent me a private message.

“I’ll show you around when you get here. I’ve already picked up your training gear. Just need your boot size.”

I sent her the size, then played the video again.

For years, I’d gone to the training grounds before sunrise. I’d wanted to become a warrior and protect my pack ever since I was little.

Now I’d awakened such a powerful wolf. I finally had the strength to follow that dream.

I replied to Greer.

“Thank you. I’m leaving the day after tomorrow.”

Greer stayed beside me while the healer stitched my wound and applied herbs.I reached for the water on the table. She handed it to me and put in a straw.“The captain stopped by,” she said. “We caught two of them. The others escaped. There are more warriors on the border now.”“What about the injured families?”“They’ve all been treated. The little boy with the toy asked if you could visit him tomorrow.”I nodded and sucked in a breath as the movement pulled at my shoulder.Greer quickly propped a pillow behind me.Mom came in carrying a bowl of soup. Dad followed with a bag of fruit.“The healer said you can eat something now.” Her eyes were red as she carefully set the bowl on the table.“Thank you.”She picked up the spoon, blew on it, and brought it toward my mouth.I took it from her.“I can do it.”Mom sat by the bed, watching Greer adjust the lamp. She reached over to help and touched the bandage on my wound.“Don’t press there,” Greer said gently.Mom pulled her hand back at o

It was dark by the time the convoy reached the border. The last family lived deep in the woods. The father was injured, and his wife waited outside with their child in her arms.I helped load their medicine and clothes into the car, but the little boy clung to a toy wolf and refused to get in.“Dad hasn’t got my blanket yet.”Greer went inside to get it and wrapped both the boy and his toy in it.The convoy turned around and headed back.Near the wooden bridge, I caught an unfamiliar scent. The grass by the road had been flattened, and fresh paw prints marked the mud.I pressed the button on my radio.“Stop. There might be rogues ahead.”A tree that had been sawed through fell across the road. The first car braked hard. Several rogues burst out of the woods and charged the truck at the back. The captain led the warriors toward them. Greer and I opened the car doors and told the families to get out and follow the ditch away from the road.“Take them to the old patrol station,” I told Gr

When I came out of the supply room on Saturday afternoon, Mom and Dad were already there. They sat on a bench outside the visitors’ office. A fruit basket rested at Mom’s feet, and Dad held a bag of new training gear.Mom stood as soon as she saw me.“Abby, you... you’ve lost so much weight.”She reached for my face. I stepped aside and handed the paperwork to the guard at the door.“I have a mission this afternoon. Let’s go inside.”In the meeting room, Mom arranged containers of blueberries, strawberries, and cut pineapple on the table. She pushed the pineapple toward me.“You loved this when you were little.”“That’s Jasmine’s favorite.”Mom’s hand stopped. Looking embarrassed, she lowered her head.I took an apple from the basket and washed it under the tap.Dad set the bag of gear beside me.“I asked a friend on the patrol to pick this out. He said it was good.”I opened it. The arm guards were the size I’d worn three years ago. The straps were too short.Dad noticed too. He looke

On my third day, I joined Greer on a border patrol. Before we left, the captain spread a map across the hood of a car. The wooden bridge to the north was being repaired, so the food trucks were taking the road through the woods.“There have been rogues in the area. If you see anything, alert the other teams first.”Greer and I were assigned to check the southern stretch of road. The convoy stopped to check the route ahead. A breeze blew out from under a truck, carrying a sharp smell.I went around the back and crouched down. Dark red powder clung to the inside of the frame.I leaned closer. It was the same smell I’d just caught.Greer rubbed some between her fingers. Her face changed.“Tracking powder. Once it’s on a vehicle, the scent sticks around for days.”The driver gripped the door.“Someone put that on the trucks? So they can follow our scent wherever we go?”I checked the other vehicles and found the same powder on another truck’s tire. When the captain heard, he ordered the co

While I slept, the lights were still on at home, thousands of miles away. My whole family sat around the table in silence.Mom put down her phone, looking worried.“Abby still isn’t answering. Jasmine, did she tell you where she was going to work?”Jasmine shook her head.“Connor said she was going somewhere far away. That’s all I know.”Dad paced around the room. Then he picked up his phone and called my instructor at boarding school.“Abby said she was leaving for work. Do you know where she is?”The instructor paused before answering.“Silverfrost Pack. She accepted a position as a warrior recruit. Her transfer has already been arranged.”Dad stopped in his tracks.“How is that possible? She only just awakened. How did Silverfrost choose her so quickly?”The instructor sounded surprised.“You don’t know? Abby awakened the strongest wolf in her group. She’s always done very well in training, too.”Mom leaned toward the phone, her voice anxious.“But she hurt her knee a while ago. Can

The bus journey north took about twenty-ish hours.I leaned against the window as messages from home came in.Mom posted a photo of dinner in the family chat. There was roast salmon in the middle of the table, with Jasmine’s medal beside it.“Got there too late. They only had frozen left. I’ll go earlier next time.”Connor replied, “Still tastes pretty good.”Jasmine sent a heart.Dad said nothing. No one asked where I was, whether I’d eaten, or when I would arrive. At three in the morning, I got off in a small town at the foot of the mountains.Only a few lights were on in the parking lot. The other passengers were soon picked up by their families.I pulled my suitcase toward the waiting room.A woman in a dark jacket stood by the door, holding a whiteboard.Abby Merrick. The letters were large enough to read from a distance.“Abby?”I nodded.“I’m Greer, from Silverfrost Pack. How was the trip?”“Fine, thanks.”She took my suitcase and glanced down at it.“Just this one?”“Yes.”She
