Chapter 3

작가: Lyra
Jasmine’s ballet finals were coming up.

At dinner, Mom brought up the cost of competing in neighboring Silver Moon Pack.

“The entry fee and costume rental come to five hundred dollars.”

Dad kept cutting his meat without a word.

Mom turned to me as though the answer were obvious.

“Abby, you’ve been working little jobs, haven’t you? Cover it for your sister. I’ll pay you back next month.”

My fingers tightened around my fork.

“Mom, I don’t have much saved.”

“How is that possible? I’ve been sending you spending money for years.”

“I pay your tuition. The school provides your meals and a place to stay. You hardly buy any clothes. What could you possibly be spending it on?”

I looked down at my sleeve.

She was right about one thing. I’d worn this sweatshirt for three years. The cuffs were fraying, and I still couldn’t bring myself to replace it.

Mom only gave me three hundred dollars a month.

A new pair of training gloves cost thirty-five dollars. When my old pair wore through, I washed dishes in the kitchen for two weekends to buy another.

Connor’s boots, which he’d worn for all of half a day, had a three-hundred-and-eighty-dollar price tag on the box.

She knew nothing about the years I’d scraped by on odd jobs and scholarships. She’d never cared enough to ask.

“Okay, Mom. I’ll pay the five hundred.”

Her voice brightened at once.

“That’s more like it. Jasmine, thank your sister.”

Jasmine pushed the peas around her plate.

“Thanks, Abby,” she said absently.

Connor put down his fork.

“Mom, what about my ski lessons? Twelve hundred. You said I could sign up.”

“Start taking your school training seriously first.”

“Why does Jasmine get something and I don’t?”

“She’s won prizes. What have you done? You got into a fight at school today!”

He shoved his plate away and stood up.

“Then I’m not eating.”

“Connor, get back here!”

Mom called after him. Dad frowned and told him to come back.

I said nothing and finished my dinner.

No one asked how much I’d have left after paying the five hundred dollars.

No one asked what I’d been trying to tell them that morning either.

That night, I moved the foldout couch into the storage room so Jasmine would have space to practice.

Clutching my thin blanket, I squeezed past the boxes by the door and lay on the couch. It was too short for me.

Through the wall, I could hear Connor playing games. His laughter went on and on.

Unable to sleep, I opened the family group chat and scrolled back.

A week earlier, Mom had shared a video of Jasmine dancing.

“Our Jasmine just keeps getting better.”

Dad had replied with a string of clapping emojis.

In between their messages was one from me.

“Mom, could you send me a hundred dollars? I hurt my knee during training, and I can’t afford the medicine the healer prescribed.”

It might as well have been invisible.

Right after it, Connor had posted a picture of some training boots.

Mom asked what size he needed and promised to take him shopping that weekend.

My message never got a single reply.

In the end, my training instructor paid for the medicine.

I closed the chat and opened the documents from Silverfrost Pack.

Every year, they recruited young werewolves from other packs who had awakened powerful wolves. They provided meals, housing, and a training allowance. Recruits who passed the assessments would join their warriors.

The elders of both packs had approved my invitation. My transfer was arranged. All I had to do was sign when I got there.

My phone lit up with my ticket confirmation.

I would leave early in two days, change buses once, and arrive in the early hours of the following morning.

I turned off the screen and looked at my suitcase by the wall.

Over the past few days, no one had noticed the neatly folded clothes already packed inside.

No one had noticed there were no shoes of mine by the door.

They were all in the suitcase. I hadn’t left a single pair out.

Greer stayed beside me while the healer stitched my wound and applied herbs.I reached for the water on the table. She handed it to me and put in a straw.“The captain stopped by,” she said. “We caught two of them. The others escaped. There are more warriors on the border now.”“What about the injured families?”“They’ve all been treated. The little boy with the toy asked if you could visit him tomorrow.”I nodded and sucked in a breath as the movement pulled at my shoulder.Greer quickly propped a pillow behind me.Mom came in carrying a bowl of soup. Dad followed with a bag of fruit.“The healer said you can eat something now.” Her eyes were red as she carefully set the bowl on the table.“Thank you.”She picked up the spoon, blew on it, and brought it toward my mouth.I took it from her.“I can do it.”Mom sat by the bed, watching Greer adjust the lamp. She reached over to help and touched the bandage on my wound.“Don’t press there,” Greer said gently.Mom pulled her hand back at o

It was dark by the time the convoy reached the border. The last family lived deep in the woods. The father was injured, and his wife waited outside with their child in her arms.I helped load their medicine and clothes into the car, but the little boy clung to a toy wolf and refused to get in.“Dad hasn’t got my blanket yet.”Greer went inside to get it and wrapped both the boy and his toy in it.The convoy turned around and headed back.Near the wooden bridge, I caught an unfamiliar scent. The grass by the road had been flattened, and fresh paw prints marked the mud.I pressed the button on my radio.“Stop. There might be rogues ahead.”A tree that had been sawed through fell across the road. The first car braked hard. Several rogues burst out of the woods and charged the truck at the back. The captain led the warriors toward them. Greer and I opened the car doors and told the families to get out and follow the ditch away from the road.“Take them to the old patrol station,” I told Gr

When I came out of the supply room on Saturday afternoon, Mom and Dad were already there. They sat on a bench outside the visitors’ office. A fruit basket rested at Mom’s feet, and Dad held a bag of new training gear.Mom stood as soon as she saw me.“Abby, you... you’ve lost so much weight.”She reached for my face. I stepped aside and handed the paperwork to the guard at the door.“I have a mission this afternoon. Let’s go inside.”In the meeting room, Mom arranged containers of blueberries, strawberries, and cut pineapple on the table. She pushed the pineapple toward me.“You loved this when you were little.”“That’s Jasmine’s favorite.”Mom’s hand stopped. Looking embarrassed, she lowered her head.I took an apple from the basket and washed it under the tap.Dad set the bag of gear beside me.“I asked a friend on the patrol to pick this out. He said it was good.”I opened it. The arm guards were the size I’d worn three years ago. The straps were too short.Dad noticed too. He looke

On my third day, I joined Greer on a border patrol. Before we left, the captain spread a map across the hood of a car. The wooden bridge to the north was being repaired, so the food trucks were taking the road through the woods.“There have been rogues in the area. If you see anything, alert the other teams first.”Greer and I were assigned to check the southern stretch of road. The convoy stopped to check the route ahead. A breeze blew out from under a truck, carrying a sharp smell.I went around the back and crouched down. Dark red powder clung to the inside of the frame.I leaned closer. It was the same smell I’d just caught.Greer rubbed some between her fingers. Her face changed.“Tracking powder. Once it’s on a vehicle, the scent sticks around for days.”The driver gripped the door.“Someone put that on the trucks? So they can follow our scent wherever we go?”I checked the other vehicles and found the same powder on another truck’s tire. When the captain heard, he ordered the co

While I slept, the lights were still on at home, thousands of miles away. My whole family sat around the table in silence.Mom put down her phone, looking worried.“Abby still isn’t answering. Jasmine, did she tell you where she was going to work?”Jasmine shook her head.“Connor said she was going somewhere far away. That’s all I know.”Dad paced around the room. Then he picked up his phone and called my instructor at boarding school.“Abby said she was leaving for work. Do you know where she is?”The instructor paused before answering.“Silverfrost Pack. She accepted a position as a warrior recruit. Her transfer has already been arranged.”Dad stopped in his tracks.“How is that possible? She only just awakened. How did Silverfrost choose her so quickly?”The instructor sounded surprised.“You don’t know? Abby awakened the strongest wolf in her group. She’s always done very well in training, too.”Mom leaned toward the phone, her voice anxious.“But she hurt her knee a while ago. Can

The bus journey north took about twenty-ish hours.I leaned against the window as messages from home came in.Mom posted a photo of dinner in the family chat. There was roast salmon in the middle of the table, with Jasmine’s medal beside it.“Got there too late. They only had frozen left. I’ll go earlier next time.”Connor replied, “Still tastes pretty good.”Jasmine sent a heart.Dad said nothing. No one asked where I was, whether I’d eaten, or when I would arrive. At three in the morning, I got off in a small town at the foot of the mountains.Only a few lights were on in the parking lot. The other passengers were soon picked up by their families.I pulled my suitcase toward the waiting room.A woman in a dark jacket stood by the door, holding a whiteboard.Abby Merrick. The letters were large enough to read from a distance.“Abby?”I nodded.“I’m Greer, from Silverfrost Pack. How was the trip?”“Fine, thanks.”She took my suitcase and glanced down at it.“Just this one?”“Yes.”She
