Chapter 4

작가: Lyra
Jasmine’s finals were the day before I left.

Mom got up early to curl her hair and choose her earrings.

For once, Dad took half a day off. He said he’d drive her to Silver Moon Pack himself.

Connor was still asleep, but Mom hadn’t forgotten him.

She’d left an egg sandwich and milk in the kitchen with a note bearing his name.

By the time I folded my blanket in the storage room, she was ready to leave.

“Keep an eye on Connor. Make him something for lunch. Don’t let him fill up on chips again.”

I went over and stopped her by the door.

“Mom, I need to tell you and Dad something.”

She kept rummaging through her bag for the car keys. She wasn’t listening.

“Where’s your dad? Does he have the keys?”

“Tomorrow, I—”

“Did you find the keys?” she called past me.

Dad came down the hall and held them up.

“Come on. We’ll hit traffic if we leave any later.”

I stood between them and swallowed the rest of my sentence.

Jasmine came over with her costume bag and dance shoes. Her skirt brushed my hand.

“Bye, Abby.”

I paused, smoothed her hair, and said only, “Good luck.”

The three of them went out.

As the door closed, I could still hear Mom reminding Dad.

“Did you put the water and fruit in the car? Jasmine forgets to eat when she’s nervous.”

I sat quietly on the couch and looked at the clutter on the table.

Jasmine’s open shoebox. Connor’s game controller. A patrol schedule Dad had left there.

Nothing belonged to me.

Connor finally got up at twelve.

He opened the fridge and looked around.

“Where’s my chicken? There was some left.”

“Mom told me to have it for lunch.”

He turned to me, his face darkening.

“That was mine.”

I didn’t answer. I took his sandwich out of the oven and put it in front of him.

He lifted the bread and looked at the egg inside.

“I don’t want this. Make me a burger.”

“Go buy one yourself.”

“I’ve spent my allowance.”

I stared at him for a moment.

He was fifteen and already several inches taller than me. Mom packed him two lunches every day because she worried training would wear him out.

Yet he wouldn’t even sort out one meal for himself.

“Then eat what’s on the table.”

“Seriously? How much does a burger cost?”

I ignored him and went back into the living room to finish packing.

I put in my charger, toiletries, and the last pair of shoes, then zipped the suitcase shut.

Connor came over with his milk. He stopped when he saw the case.

“You’re leaving? Where are you going?”

“To work.”

He looked slightly surprised. “Where?”

I gave a small smile instead of answering directly.

“Somewhere far away.”

“Oh.”

He lost interest and took his milk back to his room to play games.

Mom and Dad returned with Jasmine at five.

She’d only placed seventh, but Mom was still delighted.

She took a coat from a shopping bag and held it up against Jasmine.

“Do you like it? You worked so hard at the competition. This is your reward.”

Jasmine clung to Mom’s arm.

“Thanks, Mom.”

Connor poked his head out of his room.

“What about me?”

“Oh, stop. This is Jasmine’s reward.”

They laughed and talked by the door. Shopping bags covered half the couch.

I picked up my suitcase to make room for them.

The whole time, it was as though I wasn’t there.

By eleven, everyone had gone to bed.

My suitcase stood by the front door. Still, no one noticed.

I sat on the couch through the night without sleeping. At four, the car I’d booked pulled up outside.

I closed the door quietly behind me and carried my suitcase down the steps.

At six, I was sitting in the bus station when Mom texted.

“You’ve gone out? Pick up some salmon on your way back. We’re celebrating Jasmine tonight, and Connor wants some too.”

I hesitated, then left it unanswered.

Ten minutes later, Jasmine sent me a private message.

“Connor says you’re going somewhere far away for work. Are you upset?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell Mom and Dad?”

The driver opened the luggage compartment and began calling for passengers to board.

I picked up my backpack and typed my reply.

“I never got the chance.”

“Tell them for me, okay?”

I put my phone away, handed my suitcase to the driver, and got on the bus.

Just then, Greer from Silverfrost Pack sent a message.

“Abby, I’ll pick you up. Wait inside the station when you arrive. Don’t try walking up the mountain on your own.”

Greer stayed beside me while the healer stitched my wound and applied herbs.I reached for the water on the table. She handed it to me and put in a straw.“The captain stopped by,” she said. “We caught two of them. The others escaped. There are more warriors on the border now.”“What about the injured families?”“They’ve all been treated. The little boy with the toy asked if you could visit him tomorrow.”I nodded and sucked in a breath as the movement pulled at my shoulder.Greer quickly propped a pillow behind me.Mom came in carrying a bowl of soup. Dad followed with a bag of fruit.“The healer said you can eat something now.” Her eyes were red as she carefully set the bowl on the table.“Thank you.”She picked up the spoon, blew on it, and brought it toward my mouth.I took it from her.“I can do it.”Mom sat by the bed, watching Greer adjust the lamp. She reached over to help and touched the bandage on my wound.“Don’t press there,” Greer said gently.Mom pulled her hand back at o

It was dark by the time the convoy reached the border. The last family lived deep in the woods. The father was injured, and his wife waited outside with their child in her arms.I helped load their medicine and clothes into the car, but the little boy clung to a toy wolf and refused to get in.“Dad hasn’t got my blanket yet.”Greer went inside to get it and wrapped both the boy and his toy in it.The convoy turned around and headed back.Near the wooden bridge, I caught an unfamiliar scent. The grass by the road had been flattened, and fresh paw prints marked the mud.I pressed the button on my radio.“Stop. There might be rogues ahead.”A tree that had been sawed through fell across the road. The first car braked hard. Several rogues burst out of the woods and charged the truck at the back. The captain led the warriors toward them. Greer and I opened the car doors and told the families to get out and follow the ditch away from the road.“Take them to the old patrol station,” I told Gr

When I came out of the supply room on Saturday afternoon, Mom and Dad were already there. They sat on a bench outside the visitors’ office. A fruit basket rested at Mom’s feet, and Dad held a bag of new training gear.Mom stood as soon as she saw me.“Abby, you... you’ve lost so much weight.”She reached for my face. I stepped aside and handed the paperwork to the guard at the door.“I have a mission this afternoon. Let’s go inside.”In the meeting room, Mom arranged containers of blueberries, strawberries, and cut pineapple on the table. She pushed the pineapple toward me.“You loved this when you were little.”“That’s Jasmine’s favorite.”Mom’s hand stopped. Looking embarrassed, she lowered her head.I took an apple from the basket and washed it under the tap.Dad set the bag of gear beside me.“I asked a friend on the patrol to pick this out. He said it was good.”I opened it. The arm guards were the size I’d worn three years ago. The straps were too short.Dad noticed too. He looke

On my third day, I joined Greer on a border patrol. Before we left, the captain spread a map across the hood of a car. The wooden bridge to the north was being repaired, so the food trucks were taking the road through the woods.“There have been rogues in the area. If you see anything, alert the other teams first.”Greer and I were assigned to check the southern stretch of road. The convoy stopped to check the route ahead. A breeze blew out from under a truck, carrying a sharp smell.I went around the back and crouched down. Dark red powder clung to the inside of the frame.I leaned closer. It was the same smell I’d just caught.Greer rubbed some between her fingers. Her face changed.“Tracking powder. Once it’s on a vehicle, the scent sticks around for days.”The driver gripped the door.“Someone put that on the trucks? So they can follow our scent wherever we go?”I checked the other vehicles and found the same powder on another truck’s tire. When the captain heard, he ordered the co

While I slept, the lights were still on at home, thousands of miles away. My whole family sat around the table in silence.Mom put down her phone, looking worried.“Abby still isn’t answering. Jasmine, did she tell you where she was going to work?”Jasmine shook her head.“Connor said she was going somewhere far away. That’s all I know.”Dad paced around the room. Then he picked up his phone and called my instructor at boarding school.“Abby said she was leaving for work. Do you know where she is?”The instructor paused before answering.“Silverfrost Pack. She accepted a position as a warrior recruit. Her transfer has already been arranged.”Dad stopped in his tracks.“How is that possible? She only just awakened. How did Silverfrost choose her so quickly?”The instructor sounded surprised.“You don’t know? Abby awakened the strongest wolf in her group. She’s always done very well in training, too.”Mom leaned toward the phone, her voice anxious.“But she hurt her knee a while ago. Can

The bus journey north took about twenty-ish hours.I leaned against the window as messages from home came in.Mom posted a photo of dinner in the family chat. There was roast salmon in the middle of the table, with Jasmine’s medal beside it.“Got there too late. They only had frozen left. I’ll go earlier next time.”Connor replied, “Still tastes pretty good.”Jasmine sent a heart.Dad said nothing. No one asked where I was, whether I’d eaten, or when I would arrive. At three in the morning, I got off in a small town at the foot of the mountains.Only a few lights were on in the parking lot. The other passengers were soon picked up by their families.I pulled my suitcase toward the waiting room.A woman in a dark jacket stood by the door, holding a whiteboard.Abby Merrick. The letters were large enough to read from a distance.“Abby?”I nodded.“I’m Greer, from Silverfrost Pack. How was the trip?”“Fine, thanks.”She took my suitcase and glanced down at it.“Just this one?”“Yes.”She
