Chapter Five

Lucas’s P.O.V.

“Calm down Lucas.”  My wolf, Jace, yelled at me. “We just need to regroup and re-strategize, not everything is lost.”  He was always my conscience, much like Jiminy Cricket.  He always knew how to reason with me and calm me down, without him I’d be lost.

“How can I be calm, I wasn’t supposed to find her here, I wasn’t supposed to have a mate!” I run my fingers through my head as I pace back and forth through the gardens at the Cranston Estate, the home of the Beta and his family.  I was invited to dinner tonight as a guest after our meeting had ended.  Having the respect of both the Beta and the Alpha will make my plan go a lot smoother, at least this will mean that neither of them will suspect anything and my plan will play out.  Right now, it is very important to play my cards right, bend down to them and give them what they ask for.  Even if it is dinner with the enemy.

My plan. Eric had my parents killed when I was eight years old.  If my mother didn’t hide me away so I could escape, I would have been dead too. I spent my life as a rogue, learning all I could to survive.  I had learned of a newer pack that had formed.  The Red Moon Pack.  Their Alpha, Ryan Blackstock, had a son around my age.  No one had ever seen his son. When I learned that Eric had sent for a meeting with the new Alpha, I quickly intercepted the message and decided to pose as the new Alpha’s son, Bryce, here to speak to the Alpha on my father’s behalf..  My goal is to get close to Eric, convince him to be our ally and once I have gained his trust, destroy him and his family the way he destroyed mine.  Everything was going according to plan.  That was until I met her.

“Everyone has a mate.”  I rolled my eyes at Jace, as if he could see me.  I knew he could feel it though.  That was the bond between a person and their wolf.  They feel what the other feels and can hear what the others think.

I pace back and forth as I ran my hands through my hair, “I told her my real name Jace! How could I be so stupid? I probably just compromised the whole mission!”

I really don’t understand how Jace is being so calm.  How can our plan to destroy Eric Ravenport, and Michael Cranston too if needed, play out when my mind is messed up over some girl, and not just any girl, a Sigma

My nose went up at that thought, “hey you should give her a chance, she might not be bad.”

I laughed at Jace’s comment, “how do you figure?  She is a Sigma, Jace, you know what that means, she is wolfless and unmatable.  How can the Goddess do this to us?  I didn’t even want a mate, so instead she mates us with a Sigma?”

Jace laughed at me which just made me angrier than I already was.  “Lucas,  everyone has a mate.  I know how you felt when you looked at her, I feel what you feel, remember?  You wanted her.”  He was right.  I did want her.  Her smell alone drove me wild.  She smelled of honeysuckle and lilac.  It  was the most beautiful thing I had ever smelled and it took everything I had not to mark her and mate her right there.

“There’s something else too, she has a wolf, even if she doesn’t know it yet.”  That stopped me in my thoughts.  “I can feel her wolf waiting to come out, Lucas.”

His words repeated over and over in my head ‘she has a wolf.’ She can’t be a Sigma if she has a wolf.

I sat down on the edge of the marble fountain that sat in the middle of the garden and tried to collect my thoughts when I was interrupted by a female voice.

“Hi Lucas, didn’t expect to run into you here.”

I glanced up and cringed,  Sarah Cranston.  Since we were introduced earlier today, I have been having a hard time finding an escape from her.  I rolled my eyes, I guess a smile and a handshake automatically means I want her.

“Yeah, imagine that,” I responded nonchalantly.  Her eyes were bright blue and shined with lust as she sat down next to me and placed her hand on my leg.

“If you want a listening ear, I am here.” She smiled and leaned over to kiss my cheek as she whispered in my ear,”I am a very good listener.”  I pulled away and removed her hand from my leg.

“Thank you, but I would rather be left alone to collect my thoughts.”

I guess my words didn’t seem to sink in because as I tried to stand, Sarah jumped in my lap, straddling me, keeping me from moving.  Before I could even contemplate what was happening, her lips connected with mine.  They were soft and moist, but it didn’t sit right with me.  In fact, I found it quite disgusting.  Anyone who throws themselves at men is no better than hookers in my book.

I quickly jumped up.  As I did, Sarah slid off my lap and lost her balance; she tumbled right into the fountain.

“What do you think you are doing?” I asked angrily.  This woman feels that she can do what she wants and anyone will bow to her.  That may be so around here, but that does not work on me.

Sarah fought to stand in the fountain, her dress and hair, that I am sure she spent hours on, are completely drenched, and her makeup was running down her face. She looked like something out of a horror movie.

I offered my hand to help her up.  I pulled her to her feet and allowed her to remove herself from the fountain.  I could see her eyes were puffy and red as tears streamed from them merging with the water dripping down her face.

“I am sorry, but I am here on business, not to have a fling with the Beta’s daughter.” I looked her up and down, “I’m sure dinner will be ready soon, you may want to change before then.”

I turned and walked away, leaving her standing there speechless.
