Chapter Seven

Lindsay’s P.O.V

This is it.  I knew as a Sigma, my life would probably be short, but for it to end this early at a mere 23 years old? Eh, I guess I lived enough.  The police threw us into the back of the car, they weren’t very gentle at all, but what could be expected of them? We were Sigmas.

We almost got away with it too, it would have been epic.  Steal all the food to feed our own? But it is what it is.  I couldn’t blame Emily for moving.  Though I am still unsure what had gotten into her.  She seemed really bothered by Sarah and this Bryce character.  I know she hated Sarah, that would be reason enough, but it was if she was almost jealous.

I glanced over at Emily, she was sitting with her head down and her eyes closed.  “Hey chick, it will be okay, and even if it’s not, at least we will go out with a bang.”  I gave her a smile as she glanced over at me.

“You always try to make light even out of the worst situations.” she laughed slightly.  “The truth is Lindsay, I’ve seen my father kill for less.  I don’t know what he will do to us.”  She turned and glared out the window.

I sighed.  She is right.  I have never actually met the Alpha in person,  I have only been working at the Beta’s house since Emily became a Sigma and he would never come there while she was there.  But I have heard the rumors of his ruthlessness.  He won’t take kindly to stealing food.  Maybe he will take pity on Emily though, being his flesh and blood. I glanced over at her again, her head was against the window.  Through the reflection of the glass, I could see the fear in her eyes as tears slowly began to roll down her cheek.

“ Hey, I promise Em, one way or another, we will make it out of this.”

She tilted her head on the glass until I saw her eyes on mine.  She gave me the faintest of smiles before turning back to the window.

After a little bit of driving, we pulled up to the edge of the woods.  This was the entrance to the mating ground.  The last time I was here was when I came out to search for my mate,  and discovered I was a Sigma.  That was almost five years ago now.  They also used it for trials and pack meetings.  The officers parked the vehicle and yanked us out of the car, marching us into the woods to the grounds.

The Alpha must have been called along the way because he was already waiting for us in the center, as the rest of the pack gathered around us, Sigmas included.  Sigmas always came to

the trial of another Sigma, it was the Alpha’s way of letting them know what would happen if one of us ever went against their rules.

The crowd parted as the police pushed both of us to the center and down to our knees.  I glanced at Emily, her head was bowed down, and tears were running down her face.  At that moment, I knew exactly what had to be done.  I had to make sure she would get out of this alive, one way or another.

The Alpha stood in the middle of the surrounding pack and began to speak.

“Tonight, we are all gathered here to bear witness to a crime that had been committed,” the Alpha began.  “Crime of any sort is punishable, but crime from a Sigma?  That is punishable by death!”  I heard gasps from the Sigmas in the back as the rest of the pack cheered on.  If I was going to say anything, now would be the time to do it.  I lifted my head and spoke with courage.

“Alpha, it was me who stole the food, not Emily.  It was my satchel the food was found in.  I take full responsibility.”  Emily glanced over at me in shock.  I turned to meet her eyes and saw her mouth the words ‘what are you doing?’  “The only thing that Emily is guilty of is being in the wrong place at the wrong time, she even tried to convince me that it was a bad idea.”

“No Alpha! Do not listen to her, we both had part in it!”  What was Emily doing? Here I am trying to save her life and she keeps crucifing herself even further.

The Alpha looked between Emily and me.

“We will get to the bottom of this.”  The Alpha signals for someone to come forward.  As I look up I see Sarah Cranston approach the center.  I glare hatefully at her as she stands next to the Alpha.  She smirked at me.  I knew she was going to do everything in her power to make Emily suffer.

“Sarah Cranston, daughter of Beta Michael Cranston, you were the one who caught the thieves in action.  Please tell us what you saw.”

Sarah stood up before the pack and spoke loud.

“I entered the kitchen because I had seen Bryce Blackstock, our guest, enter to make a snack for himself.  As we were talking, we heard a noise in the corner of the room.  The baskets that were neatly stacked fell and I saw the two of them cowering in the corner,” she pointed at me, “that one had a satchel.  I grabbed the satchel and looked inside to find food from our kitchen in it.  I instantly called the police.”

Gasps arose from the surrounding crowd.  Some people were even shouting “thief” and “they deserve what they get.”

The Alpha nodded,  “thank you dear, you may join your family.”  Sarah left to merge back into the crowd, not before glancing at Emily with a hateful smile on her face. The Alpha turned back to the rest of the pack.  “As we all know, stealing is strictly prohibited, these two Sigmas will pay for what they did.  First to pay for their crime will be the one who was actually caught red handed.  Lindsay Mackelroy please step forward.”

The handcuffs had been removed when we arrived, but we were still restrained by the police.  They yanked me up and I walked forward toward the Alpha. “You understand what you did was wrong, and unforgivable among the pack.”  I nod.

“I do Alpha, but please, Emily didn’t do anything, I was the one who took the food, Emily said it was a bad idea.”  The Alpha nodded.

“Very well.”

Before I could even blink, the Alpha had partially transformed into his wolf.  He stood tall, towering above me.  I kept my head held high.  If I was going to die, I was going to die with respect.  I felt his claws come down and grab my head on both sides.  I heard Emily scream as everything went black.

Emily’s P.O.V.

“NO!!” I screamed as I saw my snap Lindsay’s neck.  Her lifeless body fell to the ground.  At that moment I felt anger take over my body.  Anger I had never felt before.  Fury and rage were controlling me now.

I didn’t realize my own strength as I ripped myself free from the officers that were holding me.  Both of them fell to the ground from my force.  When I realized I was freed from them, I turned toward my father.  Shock took over his face as I moved toward him.  “You killed her for no reason, all she wanted was something to eat and you killed her!”

“Ahhh!!!” I screamed as I felt shooting pain begin streaming through my body.  At that moment I felt my bones crack and break.  The pain was so unbearable, I collapsed to the ground.  Everyone around me stood motionless and watched in shock as my body twisted and morphed out of control.
