Chapter Six

Emily’s P.O.V

The dinner went smoothly, until I saw him at the table.  I fought everything I had to keep my cool and do my job.  Serving a family that was once my equal, or better yet, below my status, is humiliating in its own right.  But, to have my mate see me at these low standards is just plain out torture.  Goddess only knows what he is thinking of me right now, especially with how he ran out of the room earlier this afternoon.

I struggled to keep my need for him down.  My face felt heated, I had a hard time concentrating on anything but him.  That’s when I noticed what had just happened. As the desserts were being brought out, I was pouring the tea when I heard a scream.  Before I had a chance to notice what happened, I heard her voice.

“You bitch!”  When my focus came back, I noticed that while I was in my own thoughts I had completely missed the tea cup and had poured the tea on Sarah’s lap.  I sighed, this won’t end well for me.  I glanced over at Lindsay and could see her snickering, trying hard to hide her laugh.

“I am so sorry Lady Sarah, please allow me to help you clean that!” I quickly grab a dry fabric napkin and pat at her skirt.

“Eww, don’t touch me!”  she yelled as she got up, “daddy please do something about her!”  She whined as she ran out of the room.

I glanced up at Beta Michael as a look of anger grew in his eyes.  “Margo, please see to it that Emily here does not receive dinner before heading back to the camp.”  Margo, the older Sigma who supervised Lindsay and me, nodded.  “As for you Emily, if something like this happens again, missing dinner will seem like a blessing compared to what you will receive.”

I nodded and turned to head to the kitchen, not before I heard Lucas speak up, “don’t you think that is a bit harsh, Beta? After all, I am sure it was an accident.”  His voice was calm and collected.  It was hard to read him or his feelings at that moment.

“You are right Bryce, I can see how it would look that way to an outsider, but we need to make sure the Sigmas know their place around here.  We let them go with something the next thing you know they will be thinking they can walk all over us, we can’t have that happening now.”

Bryce? I swore he told me his name was Lucas.  I shrugged it off as I saw him nod to the Beta

I went to the kitchen and began working on dishes.

“Look at all this waste of food,” I said to Lindsay, as she entered the kitchen.  I shook my head,  “It really is wasteful.” I never noticed until I became a Sigma myself and saw how much food is thrown out.  “This could easily feed half of the Sigma camp.”

The dinner had ended a few hours ago, Lindsay and I were still cleaning up and getting the dishes finished before we could go home for the night.

Lindsey shook her head as well, “these privileged beasts think they walk on the moon and to think we are forced to bow down to them.”  She pondered in thought for a moment before her face lit up.

“I have a brilliant plan!”  I could see the wheels rolling in her head, that is never a good sign.  “Let’s take this food back to the camp, it’s about time we ate well for once!”

My eyes darted to her, “are you crazy? What if we get caught?!”  Lindsay with her off the wall plans, she’s going to get us in serious trouble one day.

“Oh stop being a baby, do you really want to starve tonight? Come on, take a chance, be daring, feel the thrill of it!”  I laughed.  She really knew how to make a horrible situation seem tolerable.

“Okay,” I replied, as Lindsay jumped for joy.

“Hurray!  She is finally learning to live on the edge!”

“Shhh!” I grabbed her arm to calm her down, “we really don’t need anyone hearing us!”

“Good point,” she whispered.  “Okay, first, we shove our faces until we can no longer walk, then we bag up the rest to bring back to camp.”

Just as we started shoving our faces full, a man’s voice came from the doorway.  “Looks like we got some thieves here.”

Lindsay and I both looked at each other and froze, we slowly turned to the voice at the door.  There was Lucas or Bryce, or whatever his name was, standing and smirking at us.

“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. I was just coming to get a snack myself.”  We both continued chewing and swallowed as Sarah’s voice echoed down the hall.

“Bryce!? I could have sworn I saw you come down here.”

“Quick hide!” Lucas whispered, as Lindsay and I hid in the corner next to the stove.  Lucas pulled some baskets in front to hide us better.

Lucas had just got the last basket in place and stood back up to the counter with a loaf of bread in his hand as Sarah walked in.

“I thought I saw you walk in here.” She smiled as she walked up and wrapped her arms around his waist.  “I missed you.”

“Ooh look at this,” Lindsay whispered to me, “our boy here has a girlfriend.”  She looks at me as she smiles. “Maybe their little rendezvous may lead to something and we can be freed from her, wouldn’t that be something.”  She laughed to herself.

I could feel my blood boil as I watched her touch him.  How dare she?  I wanted to jump out and rip her arms right off her body. Lindsay’s words weren’t making it any easier.  It wasn’t her fault though, I never told her he was mine.

“Sarah, I told you earlier-”  she cut him off with a kiss. Her arms snaked up behind his neck and pulled him to her.  My blood began to boil even more.  I made the mistake of moving slightly as the baskets that were hiding us fell.

I watched Lucas push her away.  “Sarah, please leave me alone.”  They both turned towards the noise.

“Are you two spying on us?”  Sarah walked over towards us and stopped.  She grabbed Lindsay by the arm and pulled her up to her feet. “What is this?!”  She grabbed the satchel from Lindsay’s arm and opened it.  She turned it upside down as the food that we snuck in the bag fell out.

“Were you two trying to steal from us?”  Anger shown in her face.  “This is the end of the line for the two of you!”  She pulled out her cellphone and made a call, within seconds, the police showed up.

“Sarah, I think you are over exaggerating,”  Lucas said, “all they wanted was something to eat.”

“Oh save it Bryce, there is no reason to defend them, they had it coming from the start. These two have been out to hurt me since the day Emily became a Sigma.  There is nothing she can do now to get out of this one.”

Lucas looked at me, I could see concern in his eyes as the cops arrested us.

“Please make sure they pay for what they did.”  Sarah told the police as they hulled us out of the house in handcuffs.
