[Do you also get the weird feeling that something paranormal is happening around you?]

When I read that reply again, I shuddered.

Something paranormal happening around me?

I looked around but saw nothing.

Then, I peered at Yvonne’s room from the corner of my eye, only to find her sitting as still as a statue in front of her desk.

Wait. When had she come back?

I heard her leaving to go to work just a moment ago!

Her back was facing me, and at no point did she spare me a glance. That was so weird!

I approached her on tiptoes to see what she was doing, only to find her reading.

“Yvonne?” I called out to her.

She turned around with a bit of a pale face. “When did you wake up?”

I felt like she was avoiding my gaze.

“Why aren’t you at work?” I asked instead.

“I took a leave for today. I have some things to do,” she answered casually.

After a moment of hesitation, I decided to get straight to the point. “I saw you fiddling with the shoes yesterday.”

Yvonne was stunned for a moment before she laughed wryly. “You saw that, huh?”

“What’s that for?”

“OCD,” she replied readily. “I need everything arranged neatly before I can fall asleep, especially shoes.”

She then showed me a medical report from her handbag.

“I’ve had OCD caused by anxiety for years now. The psychologist said that it’s due to stress.”

I read the medical report. It did indeed mention the disorder and treatment suggestions.

“I’m sorry. I thought—”

“That I was doing something strange? I know it looks weird, but I can’t control myself.” Yvonne smiled.

I found myself feeling embarrassed. I had simply been reading too much into the situation. Not too long after that exchange, Yvonne turned around and said nothing else. I tried talking to her some more, but her answers were crisp and short. Clearly, she was distracted.

I peeked at the entrance again. All the shoes were indeed pointed inward.

But Yvonne was behaving normally, like a standard roommate. Had I not seen her doing all those things, I would not have thought that there was anything strange about her.

Puzzled, I sent a DM to the person who had replied to my post.

[What did you mean by that? What’s this about something paranormal happening around me?]

The person replied quickly, [Girl, your roommate is performing the Guiding Ritual! It’s an ancient ritual. I don’t know the specifics, but it’s nothing good. Be careful. Those who perform this ritual usually have their reasons.]

The Guiding Ritual.

I did not recognize that term at all, but it did not sound like the average ritual.

[What should I do now?]

[Don’t alert her for now. Just watch and see whether your roommate acts normally or not. If I’m right, then she’s not just rearranging your shoes. By the way, have you been feeling sick lately? Such as feeling cold often or feeling as if someone is watching you?]

When I read this, I was stunned again.

Then, three months ago, a woman called Rain Lemmings moved in. She was alive and warm and had everything that I could never own again. That night, due to work stress, she fell sick with a high fever, and her mind was not lucid. At her weakest, I went inside her body, shoved her consciousness out, and occupied her body. Meanwhile, the real Rain Lemmings was forced out of her body and became a wandering soul. She became like me—trapped here and unable to leave.“I remember now. I’m not Rain Lemmings,” I said with a quivering voice. A complicated emotion appeared in Yvonne’s eyes, as if she felt pained but also relieved. From that gaze alone, I knew that she had always known the truth. She was a good friend of Rain’s and had been waiting over the past two months to help the real Rain return to her body. Henry tightened his grip around me. His gaze was firm and stern. I could understand his stance. As a retired cop, he would not want to see anything be chased out by fo

As the temperature dropped, all of us sensed something coming alive in the room. Yvonne grabbed a small bottle from her pocket. In it was red liquid.“This is my last resort. Drink it, and everything will end,” she said. “Wait! Don’t trust her!” Henry suddenly cried out to stop me. “What do you mean?” I was stunned. “That’s not to protect you. It’s poison!” He pointed at Yvonne. “She wants to kill you!”“What on earth are you saying?” Yvonne’s expression changed. “You think I’m lying?” Henry sneered. “Then, explain why you became her roommate so coincidentally. Why do you know about her situation so well? Why is that thing so active after you came here?”Henry’s questions caused Yvonne to panic a little. “I already told you! I’m trying to protect her—”“I looked into you, Yvonne Zimmer. You’ve been hiding a lot of things! You know Rain, so why were you pretending to be a normal roommate? Why didn’t you tell her about your relationship? This sneaking around is suspicious

Henry’s question caused the atmosphere to turn grim. Yvonne remained silent for a long time before asking, “What do you want to know?”“How did you know that she was going to stay here?” Henry started taking notes. Yvonne cast a glance at me, as if she was wondering whether she should answer or not. “Tell me.” Henry’s voice turned stern and professional. In the end, Yvonne answered after taking a sharp breath, “Through the landlady. She’s my sister.”The answer took the both of us aback. “Why hide it?” Henry scowled. “If she knew I was going to move in, she would have stopped me. My sister told me that a woman wanted to rent the apartment and seemed to find the place familiar. Then, I learned that she was the one I had been looking for all this while.”“You were looking for her? Why?”Yvonne turned to me with a complicated look in her eyes. “Because three months ago, a woman disappeared from this apartment, and you look exactly like her.”Those words struck me like a s

My phone rang. It was Henry. “You good, lass?”“I’m alive.”“That’s good. It was the seventh day yesterday, and I was worried about something happening to you. If you have a minute, I’d like to come over and check on you. There are certain things that I need to tell you face-to-face.”I cast a glance at Yvonne’s shut door before saying hesitantly, “Alright, but you should be careful.”Henry arrived an hour later. He was a bespectacled, polite-looking man in his fifties, totally different from the stereotypes I held about specialists. “Sorry to intrude.” Henry looked around once he was inside. “Where’s your roommate?”“She’s in her room.”Henry nodded before squatting down to inspect the entrance with a magnifying glass.“There are marks, alright, and they’re new.”“You don’t look like an amateur folklore specialist. What exactly is your job, Henry?” I asked. “I’ll be frank with you. I’m a retired cop. I was a detective for thirty years, and I specialized in unique cases

When Yvonne saw the shoes strewn all over the floor, she did not look as surprised as one should be.Instead, she appeared calm, as if she had been relieved of a burden. Then, she squatted down and began collecting the shoes. “Don’t be scared. You don’t need to, for now. This is just the beginning. Go back to your room to rest. We can talk tomorrow,” Yvonne said while putting the shoes away.“Can’t you tell me now?”“Not yet.” She looked at the ceiling in the living room. When I heard this, I looked at the ceiling as well. I saw nothing, but for some reason, I felt like there was something there, staring at us. After returning to my room, I lay in bed and remained unable to fall asleep no matter how hard I tried. All I could think about were the strange marks I saw. What exactly did Yvonne know?At around 4 a.m., I fell asleep, but I soon woke up to a strange sound. It was a series of rhythmic knocking, as if someone was tapping against a table with their finger. I

The seventh day finally arrived.I was restless the entire time and could not focus at work. Winston, my colleague, noticed my condition and asked in concern, “What’s wrong? You look horrible.”“It’s nothing. I haven’t been sleeping well.” I forced a smile. I was pretty close with Winston, and we usually ate and chatted together. “Is it because you’re not getting along with your roommate? You mentioned that she was a bit weird.”I hesitated for a moment before giving him a general rundown of what had been happening recently. Winston scowled at that. “Are you sure she’s just rearranging the shoes and not doing anything else?”“That’s the only strange thing I observed.”“That’s strange.” He propped his chin on his hand. “If it’s really a ritual, then it shouldn’t be this simple.”After work, I went back feeling my nerves stretched taut. Yvonne was already back home and was cooking in the kitchen. When I saw her preparing dinner, I began wondering whether I was overthinki
