Walking towards the Alpha’s part of the pack house still feels surreal, but I know I will find my mother there and not at the other part of the pack house where we used to live with my father. He died four years ago before I went to college, and now my mom is married to the Alpha. This is my first time coming back in four years. I don’t know why Dad wanted her to marry the Alpha, honestly, because she would prefer to live the rest of her life with his memories, I’m sure of that. I smiled, excited to meet her after four long years. We can spend Christmas together again though it will be different without father. As I made my way towards the side, though, I bumped into someone who had already seen me coming because the way I was pushed to the floor with force was very intentional. I groaned at the pain in my butt, then raised my eyes. Piper. Piper loathed me and to think she used to be my best friend before she allowed boy drama to get in the way. She knows all of my secrets, just like I knew hers before our final year in high school. Everything changed then. See, Piper is the daughter of the Alpha of Dark Night Pack and now my stepsister, it seems. She stared down at me with so much disdain I coiled into myself. I looked away from her piercing eyes and tried standing up, but she wasn’t having it. She pushed me down with the heel of her wedge shoes with a sneer. She let her eyes snap with her wolf to show me just how superior she was. To remind me that she has a werewolf form and I don’t. I told her this secret on my eighteenth birthday that I might never get a wolf and she promised to help me hide it. But the second we stopped being friends, everyone knew about it, including my parents. It’s safe to say they couldn’t wait for me to leave. Now I’m back with small hope that we are all grown, but I should have known. Piper doesn’t forgive anyone. She has become so bitter that I don’t even recognize her most of the time. “Where do you think you are going, Wrench?” she asked, her feet still pressing hard on my legs, making me wince more. It hurts so much! “I’m going to see my mother” I gritted out, trying to wiggle out from her shoe, but to no avail. She’s fucking strong too. “Ah, she wants to run to her mommy. What a weak wrench you still are” she mimicked a baby’s voice, anger shimmering in her eyes. “Please, Piper…” I begged through gritted teeth because it is getting unbearable. She smiled, showing her perfect white teeth, then slowly removed her foot from my leg only to kick me in the ribs. I howled, doubling over in pain, tears gathering in my eyes. I bit down a sob rushing from my throat. “That is for you strutting in here like you fucking own the place or deserve to be here. Don’t forget you are an omega, and you have service to do for the pack. Go and remove those fucking clothes and get to work” she sneered, her face contorting. “Pipes! Christmas shopping is waiting” a voice called from the door, and two girls showed up a few seconds later to take in the scene. Olivia and Tori. They used to follow us around back then. We weren’t friends, but they set us up. Piper couldn’t see through the whole drama that was made to separate us but I know what they did and they knew I knew it. I never bothered explaining to her, though, because it was not worth it. She had already decided what she wanted to do with our friendship and how she threw me under the bus about being an omega for not having a wolf. “Ouuu, she’s back already?” one said, staring at me with disdain. “No wonder I felt the air stuffing today. Why did she come back?” the other stomped her feet, staring at Piper as if she had all the answers. “She wants to suffer more, and I’m here to make her life more miserable, of course” Piper grinned maliciously while checking her nails. “But we are going to be late. We can deal with her later” Olivia said not bothering to look at me again. I wasn’t worth it. Piper turned back to me, staring at me with a wicked smile. “If you like to go and tell your mommy what I just did, we both know she won’t even believe you” “The woman that loves you more than her own daughter?” Tori laughed at the fact and we all know it. My mother would never believe that Piper would do anything bad even if she was doing it right in front of her eyes. She is a good girl and I am a liar so I stopped telling her anything. “Now girls don’t be so crude” Piper pouted. “Anyways, since you are back, you will be making dinner today for the entire pack. Don’t forget, not everyone eats the same meal.” They turned around to leave when the girls whispered something to her and I saw the way her head angled in that predatory way when she wanted to bully people from school and I had to stop her. “Oh, check the dungeon too. You haven’t been there for a while and I’m sure they have MISSED you. Clean it!” With that they strutted down the hall. My heart squeezed in my chest at the thought of the dungeon because I was almost raped one time because a guard ‘mistakenly’ left a cell door open. It wasn’t a mistake! I stood up from the floor and dragged my suitcase with me while wincing. I went to check on my mother in the master bedroom but she wasn’t there. She was in a guest room and it looks like that is where she stays. What sort of marriage is this between her and the alpha? I greeted her and she answered lazily though she looked a bit sick. I’m sure it’s because of my father's death. When your mate dies, you start to hate your own life. She didn’t show any sign that she had missed me, only accepted my greeting like it was the usual day. It stung so bad but I swallowed and told her I was going to make dinner for everyone. “Good. Alpha Ronan has been complaining about Cook lately. Since you are back you can take over.” She said lazily reclining on the bed. I swallowed against the thick and raw hurt in my throat and set out to the room she told me to use. It was the smallest one that used to have the former Luna's stuff before she ran away. She wasn’t Alpha Ronan’s mate and when she found her mate, she left him. I started making the dinner first and set everything in the large dining room fit for a hundred people. Yes, I did everything alone cause the maids won’t help me. “You are the same as us and our only difference is you are the Alpha’s stepdaughter now. But still an omega” one of them had scoffed, then they disappeared from the kitchen. I hurried to the dungeon before the sky turned dark and just in case I asked the guards to make sure every cell was locked. Once confirmed I entered the foul smelling place and started cleaning. I haven’t lost my touch because even when I went to college I used to work as a janitor to pay my bills. There is nothing new. I finished as soon as I could then run away from the cat calls. The men inside were so nasty telling me what they’d do to me if I just accepted them. That they’d show me a good time to forget my sorrows. Disgusting pigs. While walking back to the pack house I pass by the pack gym. It was empty except for one person training vigorously half naked. My eyes widened when I realized who it was. Alpha Ronan. I stared at him with unabashed eyes as I always do. It doesn’t matter that he is married to my mom now. He is the most handsome man I have ever seen in my life. Late thirties, dark hair and hard muscles everywhere. He finished training and turned around. My eyes zeroed on the shape of his manhood straining against his tight sweatpants. I swallowed. The way this man has featured in my every wet dream…WREN’S POV The night air was thick with anticipation. From the moment I stepped into the grand ballroom, I felt the unspoken tension and the weight of a hundred curious stares pressing down on me. The room was a masterpiece of gold and silver chandeliers dripping with crystals that cast glittering reflections across the marble floors. Laughter and murmured conversations filled the space but I barely heard any of it. Because I could feel him all around me, Ronan. We didn’t come together because he had an errand to run so I came here alone. Even before my gaze found him, my body was attuned to his presence. And when I finally did spot him across the room my breath stuttered in my chest. He was dressed in all black, his suit fitting him too perfectly, his powerful frame impossible to ignore. He looked like a king among men, his expression unreadable but his storm-colored eyes were already locked on me. A flicker of something dark passed through his gaze but he didn't move.
RONAN’S POV The waves crashed against the shore in a steady rhythm but nothing about it calmed me. The air was crisp with the scent of salt and damp sand as I ran along the beach, my feet sinking into the cool grains with every step. I wasn’t running for the exercise but because I needed to clear my head and to find some way to breathe through the mess that last night had become. I had no intention of going to the gym. Mason would be there, and after what happened, I couldn’t stand the thought of looking at him. Wren had been the one to kiss him but he had kissed her back, fully aware of what she meant to me. That alone made my blood boil. This alliance was already fragile but now, for the first time I was questioning whether I could go through with it. The easy thing to do would be to walk away, to let Mason and his pack fend for themselves. But I couldn’t. My people needed this. And if there was one thing I had learned, it was that my own needs would always come second.
WREN’S POV The regret hit me instantly. The moment my lips left Mason’s, a sickening wave of nausea churned in my stomach all cold and relentless. I stumbled back the world tilting violently beneath my feet. Mason’s hands shot out, trying to steady me but I jerked away as if burned. I couldn’t even breathe properly. What had I just done? My head pounded the music, the crackling bonfire and the scattered laughter all blurring into meaningless noise. Camille’s voice cut through the chaos calling my name with her face etched with worry as she moved toward me. But I couldn’t stand there and let her see the shame twisting inside me like a knife. So I ran like the fucking coward i have been my whole life. I didn’t wait for her to catch up and didn’t bother with explanations. My legs carried me toward the cabin my breaths coming in sharp and uneven gasps. By the time I reached the bathroom my hands were trembling so badly that I nearly ripped the door off its hinges trying
WREN’s POV The Alpha’s words settled over me like a dense fog all thick and suffocating. My heart pounded against my ribs as I took a step back, my fingers unconsciously reaching for my mark feeling the faint ridges of where Ronan’s teeth had once sunk into my skin. Fading? That wasn’t possible. It wasn’t supposed to be possible. Mating marks are not meant to fade no matter what happens. What does it mean it is going away? I didn’t even notice. I cannot wait to go and check if he is right but why would he lie to me? I forced a breath my throat tightening as I searched Mason’s face for any hint of a lie but all I found was quiet confidence and certainty. He knew exactly what he was saying and exactly what kind of chaos he had just stirred inside me. “Ronan never told you did he?” Mason mused, his voice a gentle hum beneath the music and crackling fire. He didn’t look surprised. If anything, there was something patient about him and something that made my skin prickle wi
WREN’S POV The moment Ronan handed me his black card, I knew he was serious about this bonfire party. He wants to make sure this alpha knows he wasn’t here to joke. He came as a guest but if this is what it takes to become allies with him then so be it. “Get whatever’s needed” he said simply, slipping the card into my hand with that same detached authority he always carried. It was maddening how effortless he made things seem like dropping a small fortune on an event wasn’t even worth blinking over. “You trust me with this?” I raised my eyebrow at him wanting him to see little sense. I don’t woke well with cards anymore. “No, I think I shouldn’t. But I don’t have time for it” His lips twitched like he was amused. Seems like I’ve turned into a comedian to this man and the thing is I don’t even mind. I rolled my eyes and walked off already pulling out my phone to call Camille. If there was one person who could turn a regular bonfire into something legendary it was her.
WREN’S POV Warmth. That was the first thing I noticed as consciousness slowly pulled me from the dephts of sleep. A gentle and lingering heat still clung to my skin sinking into the sheets wrapped snugly around me. My lashes fluttered with the hazy edges of sleep softening my thoughts and cradling me in a lull that made me want to stay here forever. But something was missing. I turned my head slightly pressing my face deeper into the pillow and inhaling faint traces of musk and something uniquely him. The scent made my chest squeeze and made my lips part as if I could breathe in the remnants of his presence and trick myself into believing he was still here. But he wasn’t. My fingers curled against the sheets, the absence beside me more jarring than it should have been. I had fallen asleep in his arms and remembered that much. The steady rhythm of his heartbeat and the weight of his hand resting against my back and the way his fingers had tangled lazily into my hair w
