Chapter 8

Author: Emotionless
In the end, all he could do was bark orders.

"I don't care. Something happened to Anne's family. The firm is short-handed—you have to come back."

So that was it. I'd wondered why Lewis suddenly remembered me. In the end, it was all for his precious little girlfriend.

After issuing his command, he hung up without a shred of hesitation.

I stared at my phone, utterly baffled.

What did Anne's problems have to do with me? Did he really think playing the overworked, pitiful card would make me come running?

I tossed the phone aside and explained things to Jordan.

"Don't worry about it. I'm fully committed to our firm now—body and soul. Messages from my ex are just like background noise to me."

With that, I pulled out a file and got back to work.

But Jordan took the documents straight out of my hands.

"Go. Why wouldn't you go?"

Sitting on the train back, I still couldn't figure out why Jordan wanted me to return. Even less could I understand why he insisted on coming with me.

  • No More Waiting for His Love   Chapter 10

Our marriage had never been about passion; it had always just… existed. A natural course. When it reached its end, it was only fitting that it ended cleanly.Lewis knew he had been neglectful of me. He was a lawyer, living in a world of black and white, everything meticulously planned. His earlier ignorance had been little more than lies he told himself. Once I exposed them, he could no longer ignore his own shortcomings. And that was fine. If he had insisted on clinging to me, it would have felt false. He wasn't that kind of person, and neither was I."You don't need to come here every day. I'll put on makeup—I know you can't stand it otherwise."Yet, unexpectedly, Lewis still looked out for me. During the period he was handling Anne's case, it was the most attentive he had ever been to me in five years of marriage. For a moment, I couldn't tell if it was for me—or for Anne.…On the day of the trial, Jordan had taken the day off to watch me. He claimed it was to witness a new e

  • No More Waiting for His Love   Chapter 9

Lewis ignored Jordan and looked only at me. In truth, he wasn't as confident as he pretended to be.Ever since I handed in that resignation letter, he'd lost his grip on me. He knew it. He just refused to believe it.He was always telling me not to bring personal matters into work—but he was the one who acted on impulse, time and again. He vented his emotions through pressure, forcing me to give in. He knew that as long as he stayed firm, I would lower my head. For all these years, that's exactly what I'd done. So he assumed this time should be no different.I looked up at him and took a deep breath."Fine."Beside me, Jordan went cold instantly. "Janice.""Sign the divorce agreement," I said calmly, "and I'll agree."Lewis sprang to his feet, staring at me in disbelief.Only then did he finally understand—just like my resignation, the divorce I'd mentioned was never a joke.…"No… these are two different things. You can't—""Why not?" I cut off his attempt to find an excu

I suspected Jordan had called me in just to mock me.I steeled myself, running through lines again and again in my head—preparing for how to parry Jordan's sharp, rapid-fire remarks. To my surprise, I didn't see Jordan at the interview. The person who interviewed me was Jordan's protégé.He told me that Jordan was on a business trip out of the state that week, but had specifically instructed him to take good care of me to see whether my professional skills had improved over the past few years. The interview process went smoothly. After remote communication with Jordan, his protégé finalized my offer.I couldn't say I was merely surprised. It felt more like a gift falling from the sky.Perhaps Jordan had simply taken me in to spite Lewis?I couldn't read his mind. In any case, he wouldn't be back for another week.During my first week at the firm, my colleagues showed me exceptional consideration. At first, I didn't understand why. Then Jordan returned, and everyone was on ed

It was a rare sight on Lewis's icy, unchanging face he'd worn for over a decade. But in the very next second, he pointed at me and told me that since I clearly didn't want to work anymore, I should get the hell out of the firm immediately.I'd been waiting for those words. I smiled brightly, answered "Okay," then turned around and went to pack up my desk. For the first time in a long while, I felt light all over.…As I packed up my things, no one around me dared ask what had happened.I'd been brought into the firm by Lewis himself. To everyone there, I was his protégé. So his strictness toward me had always been seen as natural, even justified. After such a huge scene in the office, no one dared question me about it.Only Rosie kept her head down, appearing to work seriously through documents. In reality, in our chat window, her keyboard was practically sparking. My phone vibrated in my pocket. I didn't even need to check—I knew she'd sent a barrage of exclamation marks.Ca

"What do you mean by this?"Lewis sat down across from me, frowning deeply, his face full of confusion."Throwing a tantrum for a bit is one thing. But drag it out, and it stops being cute. You're not some young girl who can act up and still be adorable."Of course I'm not.If he didn't still feel a trace of guilt toward me at this moment, he wouldn't have spared me even this much patience. The only person he was ever willing to wait for was Anne."Relax. I don't have the energy to fight with you either."I pushed the divorce agreement a little closer to him.Suspicious, he flipped it open. As he read, his expression grew increasingly grave.I couldn't quite understand it.He knew perfectly well that the terms I'd proposed were all to his advantage. I didn't see what there was for him to hesitate over.Yet he slammed the agreement down in front of me, anger flaring."I've told you countless times—don't bring personal emotions into work."I lifted my eyes to meet his and rep
