Wren

The flashing blue and red lights of the patrol cars sliced through the dark living room, casting rhythmic, bloody hues across the walls. Downstairs was a war zone of noise, the sharp, aggressive echo of a drill as a local carpenter boarded up the shattered French doors, and the muffled, furious baritone of Ross shouting at Detective Miller.

I couldn't breathe in that room anymore. Every time I looked at the floorboards, I saw the ghost of the masked figure standing right behind us.

WrenThe phantom smell of smoke and gasoline seemed to cling to my skin, even though we were twenty stories above the ground, sealed behind bulletproof glass. The news of the explosion at our old house had shattered what little composure I had left. I had spent hours pacing the cold marble floor of the penthouse, my mind playing a horrific loop of what would have happened if we had gone back for my things. We would have been ashes."Wren. Stop."Dani’s voice was a soft command from the doorway. He was fully dressed now in a casual, dark-knit sweater that made his shoulders look impossibly broad. In his hand, he was holding a large, woven wicker basket, and a plush cashmere blanket was draped over his forearm.I blinked at him, bewildered. "What is that?""A distraction," he said, walking over and gently taking my hand. His fingers were warm, grounding, and completely steady. "You've been vibrating like a tuning fork for three hours. We're going upstairs.""Dani, the house exploded—""

WrenIf jealousy was a color, I was currently a very loud, very ugly shade of fucked up neon green.I sat at the kitchen island of the ultra-modern penthouse, aggressively stabbing a fork into a bowl of fruit. Across the room, Dani was leaning against the counter, completely oblivious to my internal crisis. He was wearing nothing but grey sweatpants, his dark hair messy from sleep, looking so ridiculously handsome it felt like a personal insult."You're going to murder that melon, Wren," Dani observed, a faint, amused twitch at the corner of his lips."The melon knows what it did," I muttered, chewing viciously."Right." He poured himself a cup of coffee, his broad, bare shoulders flexing. "Are you going to tell me why you've been glaring at the toaster for the last ten minutes, or should I call a priest to exorcise it?""I am not glaring," I said, putting my chin in my hand and puffing my cheeks out. "I'm perfectly fine. Peaceful, even. Floating on a cloud of serenity."Dani slowly s

WrenThe morning sun broke through the storm clouds, flooding the pristine, white-marble penthouse with a blinding glare that felt entirely unearned. After the horror of the midnight text, Detective Miller’s tech team had traced the photo. It had been pinged from a burner phone miles away, a calculated scare tactic to prove they were being tracked, even if the building's physical perimeter remained completely impenetrable.By noon, the walls of the penthouse felt like a gilded cage."We need to get out of these four walls before we all lose our minds," Dani announced, tossing his keys onto the counter. He looked exhausted, the skin around his eyes still slightly pink from the chemical spray, but his posture had regained that fierce, commanding edge. "The 22nd floor of this building is a private, residents-only sky lounge. Total security. No one gets up without a biometric scan. Let's go get actual food."For the first time in days, I agreed. I needed to see the sun without a pane of g

I couldn’t look up.Every muscle in my body froze into blocks of solid ice. My gaze was locked onto the glowing screen of my phone, staring at the night-vision feed of myself staring at the glowing screen of my phone. It was a loop of pure, unadulterated horror. If I moved my head, if I let out the scream tearing at the back of my throat, if I even looked up at the plastic smoke detector mounted to the ceiling molding above the bed, I would give him exactly what he wanted. He was out there in the dark, watching my chest rise and fall in real-time.My heart hammered so violently I was certain the microphone on the hidden camera would pick it up. Slowly, centimeter by agonizing centimeter, I slid my left hand out from beneath the duvet. I lowered it over the edge of the mattress until my trembling fingers brushed the thick, warm fabric of Dani’s shirt.I gripped his shoulder, squeezing down with everything I had.Dani was awake in a microsecond. He didn’t make a sound.. no, his survival

Downstairs was a war zone of noise, the sharp, aggressive echo of a drill as a local carpenter boarded up the shattered French doors, and the muffled, furious baritone of Ross shouting at Detective Miller.I couldn't breathe in that room anymore. Every time I looked at the floorboards, I saw the ghost of the masked figure standing right behind us."Upstairs," Dani muttered, his voice still a ragged, gravelly chain-smoke rasp from the pepper spray. He wrapped a swollen, blood-crusted hand around my wrist, pulling me gently but unyieldingly toward the staircase. "We aren't staying down here."Once we reached his bedroom, the heavy oak door shut out the worst of the chaos downstairs, but it couldn't shut out the reality of what Ross had just told us."It doesn't make sense," I whispered, wrapping my arms tightly around my chest as I paced the lengt

WrenThe creak of the floorboard hadn’t even fully faded before Dani reacted. He didn’t just step in front of me; he became a wall of muscle and pure instinct. With a brutal, sweeping motion, he shoved me sideways, sending me crashing onto the floor behind the heavy leather sofa.“Stay down!” he roared. In the next microsecond, Dani launched himself into the pitch black toward the dining room opening. What followed was a terrifying, chaotic symphony of violence in the dark. I pressed myself against the floor, my heart hammering so hard against my ribs it felt like it would burst. I heard the sickening, heavy thud of a fist connecting with bone, followed by a low, guttural snarl from Dani. A chair crashed to the ground, splintering into pieces.Desperate to help him, I scrambled to unlock my phone and flipped on the flashlight, aiming the beam toward the noise. The chaotic arc of white light sliced through the darkness, catching a terrifying fraction of a second in real-time: Dani had

Wren’s pov“You’re drunk.” It was the only reasonable thing to say, the only thing that made sense given Dani was leaning close to me like that.“A little.” He admitted, like it was nothing, like he didn’t just ask if he could kiss me.“Then you should move… I’m your friend, not some random girl yo

WREN “Damn you, Dani.” I turned around and literally sprinted to my room, my cheeks flustered. Did Dani just wink at me? I dropped my plate on the nightstand and plopped on my bed, staring at the ceiling. I slapped myself lightly wondering if this was a dream but from the slight sting I coul
