HAZEL.

The house was awfully quiet when I got back. I scrambled for my keys and slowly pushed open the door. “Aunt Agnes…” I called. The hallway was dark and my voice echoed.

Was everyone asleep?

There was a faint cackle in the back, like the sound of melting plastic under heat. Then suddenly, a pungent smell of smoke filled the air. My lungs burned as I charged forward. My bags immediately crashed to the floor alongside my keys. I might have been drunk but I found the kitchen immediately.

GISELLE.I was seated behind my desk when Nicholas's message came in.My eyes remained glued to my laptop screen. I was yet to respond to Alessio Virelli who had inquired about Evelyn's designs to schedule a meeting but as soon as I saw the message, my stomach tied into a knot.NICHOLAS: We need to talk, Giselle.I could always tell his tone in a message, this was a man I'd known for so many years and this time, I knew it wasn't going to be something good. Nicholas set a reservation for that night at the Oriental Hotel which was where we had our first date.So long ago, he ought to be proposing by now. I wished with everything inside of me that that was the outcome but deep down I knew. It was almost as if Nicholas never planned to actually marry me. All we had was a contract between us. I shut down my laptop and left the office early that day. Night came by slowly when it was all you thought about and Nicholas had his driver pick me up—I should've known then that something was wrong

HAZEL."Here you go," I gave my aunt her pills. Agnes laid in bed, her face turned to the ceiling with her eyes barely open. She was discharged a few days ago and Dr. Bryson was confident she was a lot better but looking at her, she was just different. She downed her medication with a glass of water, after letting out a deep sigh. I could tell she was in pain which was why I spent most of the time right next to her. I adjusted her bed to lay more comfortably when she softly called my name."Hazel," I grasped her hands tenderly. "I'm here," I replied."I'm still here." I watched her fall asleep after which the tears surfaced in my eyes. I couldn't bear this. I couldn't bear to see my aunt this way. Evelyn knocked before entering the room and I sniffled my nose, wiping my tears."You got work tomorrow?" She asked."Yes." I stood up from the bedside. "Barely got a week off."Evelyn rested against the door. Her eyes dimmed with concern as she stared at me. "I could stay home and watch the

My bags immediately crashed to the floor alongside my keys. I might have been drunk but I found the kitchen immediately.I could barely see through the black smoke that filled the air and the sound of the fire alarm blared even louder. The fire was coming from the oven which had been left on and forgotten.“Agnes!” I called. The heat boiled tears to the surface of my eyes as I grabbed the fire extinguisher. “David? Elizabeth!” My heart shattered thinking about my kids. My first instinct was to make sure they were safe so once I’d put the fire out, I stormed into their room. Luckily, they were still fast asleep in the

NICHOLAS.TWELVE MONTHS AGO.I walked into the office that day to see my mother alongside five men dressed in suits and carrying a briefcase in each arm. There was an open document on the table next to a safe key."What is this?" I asked impatiently. I had just gotten off the phone with my mother earlier when she told me this was about my father and how he'd left something behind for me.It had been six years since he passed so it didn't make much sense that we're only just now finding out he had a will. My eyes dropped to the document on the table and then to my mother. These men were lawyers next to her."Your father left you something," She said. My blood boiled hearing those words—your father because he wasn't that for most of my life. "Why would I ever want anything from that man?" I scowled."Just hear me out Nicholas," My mother's plea calmed me. But I did have some questions. "It's been six years and you're just now coming with some bullshit two-dollar asset?" I cussed. One of

HAZEL.I had searched the entire party for Giselle before retiring to the bathroom. I leaned over the sink, let out a sigh and rinsed my hands underneath the water. I had no idea what I wanted to say to her or why Nicolas had chosen to call my name up on the stage tonight but I needed her to know that nothing was happening. Not between Nicholas and I.The last thing I saw before she left was the tears in her eyes. The tears of a woman who had been waiting to be acknowledged for so long. The tears of a woman engaged to a man who didn't love her back. I wondered what the arrangement was or how Giselle and Nicholas even met in the last seven years. But just when I thought all hope was lost in finding her, the door opened and Giselle leaned against the frame. Her eyes were heavy and her makeup was gone which could only mean one thing but then she forced a smile to her lips. "Did you enjoy tonight?" She asked.I grabbed the towel with a sigh of relief leaving my lips. "Giselle, I've been

HAZEL."Giselle loves the new designs!" Evelyn said from across the room with relief in her voice. She'd just gotten off the call with Giselle after resubmitting some of her more authentic designs. She told me how their last meeting went and I watched how hard she worked her ass off these last few days. "I'm so happy for you, Evelyn." I walked across to her. "I never got to thank you, Hazel. This was all because of you." She replied. "Oh please. This was Giselle and if it wasn't Giselle, someone else was always going to catch on with your talent." I said and she squealed, unable to control her excitement in her bedazzled blue dress. Evelyn was trying to pick out an earring to match her dress for the dinner party later today. I glanced back at Nicholas's cake tied and boxed on the kitchen counter, far away from the kids.Today was his Mother's dinner party and although I'd already arranged someone to pick up the main cake, Nicholas had ordered a separate mint green just for himself. I
