‘Esther?’ I almost fall off the nook when my uncle’s voice in my head startles me. I have been sitting on the nook for days without moving, reading piles of books I once took from Dominic’s library. Facing fictional dragons is better because my reality sucks.

‘Uncle Felix? I thought they caught the witch who helped you out.’

‘They did. I found another one, I have my ways.’

‘This is going to get you in trouble,’ I sigh. ‘A big one.’

‘Is it a crime to want to speak to my niece? Our family is already in trouble anyway, so it’s okay.’

‘Do you force the witches? Why does Dominic hate you so much?’

‘No, you know me. I would never do that. I bribe them with money. Dominic hates me because he hates vampires. You are probably the only vampire he doesn’t hate.’
