Wedding Reception

Esther

My father and I walk down the aisle on the beach, wearing a designer gown by Alonzo, the most expensive vampire fashion designer.

I smile back at about 200 smiling vampires who have the highest ranks as we walk. I avert my gaze to Charles on the altar, and he sheds a tear, getting a reaction of "awwww!" from those who believe that he is not faking it.

Bernard, Charles's father, officiates the wedding, and I zone in and out of Charles' speech about how much he loves me.

After saying our vows, we all take a large private plane to San Bernardino, one of the Du Pont Forests.

We go to the beautifully decorated garden, and as expected, Margaret outdid herself.

"How did I do?" She fidgets nervously with her hands.

I pause for dramatic effect. "You outdid yourself," I smile, and her face immediately lights up. I hold her in a hug, telling her that I'm glad we are sisters, but in my heart, I secretly wish that Charles wasn't the reason that brought us together.

Charles and I sit in front, listening to unending speeches and vampires pledging their alliance to us.

Charles holds my hand the entire time and continues to kiss my cheek every five minutes, eliciting jealous stares from Joan, who struggles to keep her eyes off us.

‘You might be getting attention from him, but he’ll be in my bed tonight,’ she sends me a telepathy.

‘You have been his mistress for 800 years,' I retort, while my father, King Richard, speaks about how happy he is to have gained a son and a new family.

'We were going to get married eventually until you and your pathetic family showed up.'

'What were you waiting for? Were you in a talking stage? That must have been the longest talking stage in the history of talking stages. Why are you doing this to yourself?’ I smirk at her, and everyone laughs, thinking I'm smirking due to what my father probably said.

'What did you say to her?' Charles send a telepathy.

'We were just talking, nothing much. I was telling her to know her place.'

He glares at me for a second before quickly turning his frown into a smile.

Charles gets up to speak, his gaze soft, making me almost believe that he cares about me.

"I have finally found my one. After searching for centuries. I thought I was going to die a two-thousand-year-old bachelor until I met her."

He pauses as everyone laughs, his eyes and smile focused on me.

"When our parents suggested that we get married, I was overjoyed. My father threatened to force me, but I told him that there was no need. I had been crushing on Esther for centuries, but who could ever approach the beautiful and amazing Princess Esther?"

Everyone murmurs in agreement.

He raises a glass of red wine. "To Esther, my future queen, who has always been able to bring out the best in me."

We all clap, and I return his fake smile.

I get up to speak, not knowing what to say when we hear a commotion taking place near the garden entrance.

King Bernard, my father-in-law gets up and comes to the front.

"Don't be alarmed. It's our guards bringing the poison amongst our species, the vampires who drink animal blood!" He says, his face marred with contempt.

I gaze at my family, and my father shifts in his seat as King Bernard talks with so much passion and anger about these vampires and their disrespect.

"Hold on, my son has a suggestion." King Bernard gazes at Charles as they speak telepathically.

"My son here wanted to suggest that our future queen's first job will be to bring these vegetarian vampires to justice. Who agrees?"

Everyone's hands go up, including my family.

Charles gets up to speak. "I would like to honor our future queen by giving her this honorable task, which I know she will carry with grace and honor. The essence of being a vampire is drinking human blood, and these vampires who call themselves 'vegetarians,'" he grimaces as he says it. "These vegetarians show that they are ashamed of the essence of their very being. So, why should they exist?"

All the guests murmur, and I watch my family nodding along.

"We say they should get thrown into the dungeon, and my beautiful queen should lead this trial tomorrow," Charles bows to me, and I smile and nod.

'Did you feed enough this morning?' Jane sends a telepathy, the nervousness in her tone unmasked.

'Yes, I wouldn't want you all to suspect me of exposing myself on purpose.'

'That is not true. You know we care about...'

'Don't you dare, Jane!' I interject. 'I never expected this betrayal from you. How could you not tell me that Dominic is my mate?'

Her face drops. 'Look, Esther, I was trying to protect you.'

'Oh! You are really good at that, aren't you? You always know what's good enough for me. You thought I was going to go after him if I knew. You never trusted me.'

‘This is more complicated than you think.'

I ignore her, and focus my gaze on my parents who are looking at each other, their changing facial expressions informing me that they are in deep discussion.

I get up for my speech, and I try to look at Charles with what everyone will assume is love as I string together quotes from movies about love.

"My lady, may I have the first dance?" Charles kisses my cheek when I'm done and then extends his hand to me. We slow dance as I think about the vampires whom I'm going to have to sentence to death because they got caught and my family haven't yet.

Esther“You have no right to control my life,” I say between my teeth, anger rising in me. “I think I have every right,” he says calmly. “All vampires are my responsibility, and it’s my job to protect them from the likes of creatures like Dominic, and you are the only one with the ability to help. You are going to help me.”“What did Dominic do?”“He is trying to control us!” he snaps. “I can’t believe that he is a half vampire. An information that you and your family hid from me.”“I didn’t know.”“But you knew that she was your mate,” he glances at me, his face blank. “I found out recently.”“So, what did you do when you found out? You decided to abandon your duties?” he scowls. I feel ice under my skin, and not the kind that makes me happy.I roll out of the moving car and close the door before King Bernard can make sense of what is happening. I run, quickening my pace when I hear a screeching of tires in the distance, and then, the sound of movement that I know too well, the so

Esther “Let me go,” I say between my teeth. “I’m afraid I can’t, princess,” Charles says, a little amused. “It’s either you go with him or me,” he turns around. I’m still in his arms, Felix is running towards us, and I’m grateful that we are in a city, so he can’t run at a vamp speed. A car stops next to us, and Charles motions for me to get in, a wide grin on his face. “I can’t leave Jane,” I shake my head. “Jane will be fine, I spoke to Logan.” ‘Jane?’ I try to reach her. ‘I’m okay. I’m hiding. Where are you?’ she asks. ‘I’m with Charles.’ ‘What? We can’t trust Charles...’ ‘I’m going to kill you! You, throne thief!’ Felix is only two blocks away, his eyes blazing with something I can’t explain. Something I’ve never seen before. I jump in the car, and Charles follows. As the car drives off, and I look back, watching Felix, who is standing on a sidewalk, his fists clenched. “If you are taking me away to kill me, I will kill you first.” I turn to face Charles, who s

Esther I stiffen, but Uncle Felix doesn’t let go of me, even when I’m not hugging him back. “I was really worried about you,” Uncle Felix says in a low voice, although everyone can hear him. I feel rage bubbling inside me, and the more I try to hold it in, the more I feel like I’m going to explode. “You!” I push him away. Slamming him against the wall. “You monster!” I scream. My father watches this with a frown on his face, but he doesn’t try to stop me. “What did I do?” Uncle Felix blinks innocently. “I understand that pregnancy hormones might be making you lose your temper, but...” “I hate you!” I punch him on the lip. “What are you doing, Esther?” My father roars. “When I wanted to disown her, you told me that I shouldn’t do that to my own daughter,” he says to Felix. “Look at what she is doing. After everything you’ve done for her, and I told you to stop treating her like an egg!” “Let me talk to her brother,” Felix says to my father. Then, he turns and faces me.

Esther“Why are we going to the hospital?” Josh asks me, his sudden change in attitude making me feel more suspicious. “To help out with surgery,” I reply. “But the blood...” he trails off. “You are a vampire.”“I can handle my cravings. It’s like working at a restaurant. You handle the food but you don’t eat them. Right?”“So, we are food to you?” Aiden chuckles. “Of course,” I roll my eyes playfully. “What do you think?”“I’m very scared,” Aiden grins. “I’m so ashamed of myself,” Josh says. “I’m really sorry, Princess Esther.”“There’s nothing to apologize for,” I smile politely. “Where’s Hilda?”“She’s at the hospital. She said she was going to check on you later.”I nod, giving him another polite smile. “So, how do you know about surgery?” Josh asks. “I was bored and ran out of things to study. I mean, if you’ve lived for as many years as I did...”“Makes sense,” he nods. “I don’t like this, Josh,” Aiden chimes in. “Princess Esther is my friend. You can’t just take her away

Esther “I’m so sorry,” I whisper to Dominic. “This must’ve been very hard for you. The werewolves and witches are like your children.” “They are,” he nods. “Which is why you can’t just leave them. You should let me go...” “No!” he interjects. “There’s no way in hell I’m ever going to let you...” “But you agreed.” “I didn’t want to argue. Yet.” “And now you do,” I roll my eyes. “I’ll try to make you see my reasons.” “Don’t, please,” I plead. “If you leave with me, you will not be happy, and you’ll always worry about the witches and werewolves. I told you that I don’t want you to blame me for changing your life.” “I lived without you. For 300 years,” he says in a hoarse voice. “Do you know how difficult that was? I had to stay away and watch you from a distance.” “Please don’t do this, Dominic. Not right now.” “But I want to protect you. I want to take care of you,” he protests. “But I can protect...” “I want to do it anyway! You can’t tell me that you don’t feel the way o

Esther The man in front of him fidgets. He looks like he wouldn’t mind if the ground swallowed him whole, in fact, he would appreciate it. Dominic’s eyes are on him, his face blank, but his jaw is tight. “Well, Alpha, you, you see...” he stammers. “The werewolves who are on your side think it would be best if the baby,” he clears his throat. Dominic’s eyes are still on him, the tension in the air palpable. “It would be best if the baby weren’t alive,” the man flushes when he says the words. “The baby will confuse things. We need to always draw the line, Alpha, you know that. We don't even know if he or she is going to be a vampire or a lycan.”“So, you want to kill my child?” Dominic asks, his voice dangerously calm. “That’s, that’s not what I meant,” he swallows, avoiding eye contact. “And I am a half vampire,” Dominic reminds him."But we have always known you as a lycan. You have always been on the werewolves side."“Like I said, anyone who wants to get anywhere near her,”
