Chapter 1

Author: Seven Strawberries
Seeing my grief-stricken father standing beside me, I stopped Clara Jennings. “For Dad’s sake, can you at least stay until the funeral is over? Please?”

Ethan Dunn grabbed her coat. Clara didn’t even bother to look up.

“Peter, this case is very important. I’ll make it up to you later.”

Make it up to me? When she forgot my birthday and went to take a walk along the riverbank with Ethan, she said she would make it up to me.

When I had appendicitis surgery and she abandoned me to celebrate Ethan winning gold at a major competition, she said she would make it up to me. And now, when I had just lost my mother and needed her the most, she was still using that same line to brush me off.

In our three years together, I had received far too many of her promises, yet not a single one had ever come true.

Ethan glanced at me with a hint of pity in his eyes. “Forget it, maybe we should stay and keep Peter company, and leave after the funeral is over.”

Clara sighed, gave in with a smile, and only then agreed to stay. She backed down, but it was painfully obvious whose sake she did it for.

A dead silence fell over the room for three seconds. Suddenly, the front door was kicked open, and a huge gust of wind swept through the room.

“So you’re the ones trying to sue our boss? That old lady died in a simple car accident. Stop trying to frame us for it! If you know what’s good for you, drop the lawsuit right now!”

Seven or eight men in black shoved their way inside. They thrashed the funeral home in a frenzy and tipped the urn over, spilling its contents all over the table.

“No! Stop it, all of you!”

I rushed forward frantically to stop them, only to be kicked away. Subconsciously, I looked toward Clara.

She stood there and said, her tone calm and collected, “There are too many of them. We can’t take them head-on. Besides, as an attorney, getting into a physical fight is breaking the law. Just wait a little longer. The police will be here soon.”

Her rationality shattered every hope I had left. The Clara Jennings who had sworn to Dad that she would always stand by me was gone.

Dad rushed over to try to put the urn upright, but someone shoved him to the floor.

“Dad!”

I threw myself over him to protect his body but was struck in the back of my head by a heavy club, and stars began to dance before my eyes. Ringing filled my ears, and the background music and the sounds of smashing blurred together.

In a daze, I saw Clara pick up a wooden stick and instinctively take a step toward me. Yet, the next second, a shattered porcelain shard grazed Ethan’s face, leaving a bloody scratch.

“Gasp!”

Distressed, she immediately examined Ethan’s cut, then turned around and kicked the attacker to the ground.

My chest felt tight, and I collapsed with a bitter smile.

It was never about some code of ethics; I simply wasn’t worthy of her saving me. Whenever it was a choice between Ethan and me, she had never chosen me.

The police arrived at the scene quickly, and the gang fled in panic. I secretly wiped the tears from the corner of my eyes and forced myself to support Dad up. Clara and Ethan, meanwhile, were already gone.

I retrieved my phone—the screen was shattered—and found a text message from Clara.

[Ethan’s injured, so I’m taking him to the hospital. Call me if you need anything.]

I thought of the tiny scratch on Ethan’s face and then raised my hand to touch my own head, only to find my palm covered in blood. My heart felt hollow, and even my body felt numb. It was only when the nurse pressed a cotton swab down to disinfect my wound that I felt a sharp sting of pain.

After getting the wound treated, I returned home to an empty house. Her message was still stuck on the one where she took Ethan to the hospital.

Without turning on the lights, I sat on a chair in the dark, staring at the computer screen, which displayed our pre-wedding photo. There was only one photo, and it was just a candid shot taken by the photographer.

It happened because, while I was changing outfits back then, she claimed Ethan didn’t understand a specific statute for a case and that she had to help him. And so, our pre-wedding photoshoot turned into a solo portrait session for me.

With a bitter laugh, I took down all the photos and threw them into the bin.

  • On My Own   Chapter 11

The year after I got my law license, I won my first major case. It was a construction defect dispute, and the defendant was one of the top three real estate developers in the city. The plaintiffs were an elderly couple who had spent half their life savings buying a house, only to watch its walls crack and foundation sink. The developer insisted it was just natural soil settlement and refused to compensate them. When I made my opening statement, my voice wasn’t loud, but every word carried weight. I laid out all the evidence, from geological survey reports to construction logs and concrete batch test results, clearly stating the reference number and source for every document. The judge asked the defense for their response to the evidence. The veteran attorney across from me flipped through his papers, stammering out a few weak points that were full of loopholes. I seized on his logical gaps and hit him with three consecutive questions, each one more pressing than the last.By the en

  • On My Own   Chapter 10

On the day the disciplinary announcement was released, Ethan barged into Clara’s office, and intense arguing broke out from inside. When Ethan slammed the door on his way out, his eyes were bloodshot.Having lost two key partners back-to-back, the firm was left in shambles. Later, Felix sent me a message, saying he finally understood why I had resigned. I politely replied with a smiley face emoji and said nothing more. Now that justice had been served, the past could stay in the past.My license to practice law was officially reissued, and the receptionist at my new law firm handed it over to me. I sat at my desk and stared at it for a long time. When I took the bar exam three years ago, Clara was waiting for me right outside the exam hall. The moment I walked out, I saw her standing in the most obvious spot, foolishly baking under the hot sun for two hours straight, terrified that I wouldn’t be able to find her.I passed the exam but was reshuffled to the operations department

  • On My Own   Chapter 9

The day I returned to the big city, the sun was shining bright—a stark contrast to the afternoon of torrential rain when I had left. This time, my suitcase was packed with neatly organized evidence.Beyond that initial transfer record, I had obtained the call logs between the reckless driver and the developer’s project manager, along with surveillance photos showing the two meeting before the incident. I also secured a crucial witness statement: an audio recording of the developer’s accountant privately admitting that the boss had authorized the money transfer. The driver’s henchman, however, wasn’t nearly as clever as the developer or the driver. I offered him a generous sum, and he spilled everything. When the application for a retrial was submitted, the court approved it.On the day of the hearing, I sat in the plaintiff’s seat, no longer as shaken as I had been during the previous trials. I had tried to persuade Dad not to come, but he insisted on sitting in the very front row.

  • On My Own   Chapter 8

As Clara closed the journal, a flood of memories rushed to her mind.Had she wanted to leave Mom’s funeral just because Ethan brought up an absurdly ridiculous legal question? Not to mention, she had watched with her own eyes as someone struck me across the back with a club. She had originally intended to help, yet the second Ethan was injured, she turned around and forgot everything about helping me.Did my injuries ever heal afterward? Did I ever go to the hospital to get treated? She clutched her head in agony. How could she have forgotten everything?Leaning over the desk, her shoulders trembled softly as she stayed awake the entire night.Early the next morning, I was sitting at the table eating breakfast when a knock sounded at the door. It was Clara. Even the most even-tempered person would find it hard to maintain a friendly face after seeing her stand against them in court. Dad immediately grabbed a baseball bat, ready to drive her out of the house. I quickly stood up t

  • On My Own   Chapter 7

Meanwhile, I was back in my home city. Dad pulled out Mom’s belongings that he hadn’t had time to sort out. His hair had turned gray overnight after Mom’s passing. He had forced himself to hold it together and sort out Mom’s funeral all by himself. Yet, it wasn’t until the day of the funeral that Clara finally showed her face for the first time since Mom died.Dad put on his reading glasses, his hands trembling slightly as he held the storage box.“Peter, you know more about these things than I do. Clean up your mom’s stuff for me. I don’t really understand any of it.”I looked at the three cardboard boxes that Mom had left behind. Right on top was a yellowed photograph. It was a picture of me as a child, sitting in Mom’s lap. Tears welled up in my eyes again, and I quickly wiped them away in secret. When I reached the bottom of the last box, I found an envelope lying there. I opened it, and inside was actually a photocopy of a bank transfer record.Three days before the inciden

She gently lifted her hand to touch her right cheek, as if the pain from the slap was still lingering. When she raised her eyes again, the familiar figure at the operations desk was gone, and an inexplicable sense of panic suddenly overcame her.Ethan stood there, clutching the documents in his hand. Without giving him a second glance, Clara headed straight for the HR department.“Stop Peter Hall’s termination process.”On her way over, she recalled many things and realized that I was always friendly and kind to everyone. Even when it came to mundane tasks, I had always done my job.Felix was stunned. “But… he completed his resignation process yesterday.”Clara’s eyebrows twitched. She was seemingly shocked that I would go so far just to kick up a fuss with her.“Resignation? Who approved it? And why wasn’t I informed?”Felix pulled out the resignation form and placed it on the desk, his fingers trembling slightly. His mind raced as he speculated what I could’ve done to offend t
