Chapter 4

Author: Seven Strawberries
I stared in disbelief at Clara and Ethan sitting across from us. Mom had been deliberately run over and killed, yet Dad and I were the ones having to compensate the driver for emotional distress.

When the hearing ended, Clara walked over to me. “I didn’t expect Ethan to take this case… It’s his very first case after becoming partner. He’s your friend, too. Can’t you be a little more understanding?”

Numb, I pushed her away and walked straight out.

Outside, a drizzle had begun to fall. Raindrops landed on my face, mixing with my tears as they slid down my cheeks.

Three hours before my train was scheduled to leave, I rushed to the law firm to pack up my things. Upon opening a package on my desk, I froze. It was a revocation notice from the State Bar Association.

“Upon investigation, Mr. Peter Hall is suspected of leaking confidential documents in violation of regulations, severely breaching professional ethics. His law license is hereby permanently revoked, and he is banned from practicing law for life.”

During the recent leak scandal that had created a massive uproar at the firm, Clara had been the person responsible for reporting the final liable attorney to the Bar Association.

Clutching the notice, I burst into Clara’s office. She and Ethan were sitting together in front of her computer, sharing a laugh, when I slammed the notice onto her desk.

“Clara, the leaked files were with Ethan the whole time! When did I ever leak the firm’s confidential documents?”

I thought she would at least offer an apology or an explanation, but instead, she shot back with a ridiculous question.

“Ethan is a partner. How could I have his license revoked? Besides, as part of the operations department, you don’t need a law license. How does this even affect you?”

“What good is your license anyway? Have you ever argued in court? Do you know how to present evidence? If a real case were handed to you, could you handle it?”

Clara patted my shoulder and looked at me as if I were a child throwing a tantrum. “Stop making a scene. The license you earned served a purpose by taking the fall for Ethan this time. You could say it was put to good use.”

I stood frozen in place, trembling uncontrollably with rage.

She wasn’t entirely wrong, though. From the day she shoved me into operations, I had made zero progress, drifting further and further away from my dream of becoming a practicing attorney.

I let out a soft laugh as a lump formed in my throat and my eyes watered. “So you used the license I spent three years studying for and my entire future just to cover up the mess Ethan made?”

Clara paused, seemingly taken aback that I would get so angry. “Alright, calm down. Once your mom’s case is wrapped up, I’ll have Ethan guide you through writing basic legal documents to pass the time.”

Ethan, who was flipping through files nearby, looked up and chimed in, “Peter, I’ll show you the ropes. Drafting documents is really simple.”

I couldn’t hold back any longer, so I slapped her across the face. For three seconds, the office fell dead silent.

Clara clutched her cheek, staring at me in complete disbelief. “You hit me?”

Trembling with rage, I glared at her through my red eyes. “Clara, you’re heartless!”

I turned on my heel and slammed the door shut with Clara’s furious shout echoing behind me.

“Peter Hall, you’re fired!”

Outside, I grabbed my suitcase and walked toward the exit, wiping away a tear as the corners of my mouth curled into a smirk. Getting fired meant nothing to me.

I looked down at the thick stack of case materials and evidence in my hands.

Clara Jennings, the next time we meet, we’ll be opponents in court.

  • On My Own   Chapter 11

The year after I got my law license, I won my first major case. It was a construction defect dispute, and the defendant was one of the top three real estate developers in the city. The plaintiffs were an elderly couple who had spent half their life savings buying a house, only to watch its walls crack and foundation sink. The developer insisted it was just natural soil settlement and refused to compensate them. When I made my opening statement, my voice wasn’t loud, but every word carried weight. I laid out all the evidence, from geological survey reports to construction logs and concrete batch test results, clearly stating the reference number and source for every document. The judge asked the defense for their response to the evidence. The veteran attorney across from me flipped through his papers, stammering out a few weak points that were full of loopholes. I seized on his logical gaps and hit him with three consecutive questions, each one more pressing than the last.By the en

  • On My Own   Chapter 10

On the day the disciplinary announcement was released, Ethan barged into Clara’s office, and intense arguing broke out from inside. When Ethan slammed the door on his way out, his eyes were bloodshot.Having lost two key partners back-to-back, the firm was left in shambles. Later, Felix sent me a message, saying he finally understood why I had resigned. I politely replied with a smiley face emoji and said nothing more. Now that justice had been served, the past could stay in the past.My license to practice law was officially reissued, and the receptionist at my new law firm handed it over to me. I sat at my desk and stared at it for a long time. When I took the bar exam three years ago, Clara was waiting for me right outside the exam hall. The moment I walked out, I saw her standing in the most obvious spot, foolishly baking under the hot sun for two hours straight, terrified that I wouldn’t be able to find her.I passed the exam but was reshuffled to the operations department

The day I returned to the big city, the sun was shining bright—a stark contrast to the afternoon of torrential rain when I had left. This time, my suitcase was packed with neatly organized evidence.Beyond that initial transfer record, I had obtained the call logs between the reckless driver and the developer’s project manager, along with surveillance photos showing the two meeting before the incident. I also secured a crucial witness statement: an audio recording of the developer’s accountant privately admitting that the boss had authorized the money transfer. The driver’s henchman, however, wasn’t nearly as clever as the developer or the driver. I offered him a generous sum, and he spilled everything. When the application for a retrial was submitted, the court approved it.On the day of the hearing, I sat in the plaintiff’s seat, no longer as shaken as I had been during the previous trials. I had tried to persuade Dad not to come, but he insisted on sitting in the very front row.

  • On My Own   Chapter 8

As Clara closed the journal, a flood of memories rushed to her mind.Had she wanted to leave Mom’s funeral just because Ethan brought up an absurdly ridiculous legal question? Not to mention, she had watched with her own eyes as someone struck me across the back with a club. She had originally intended to help, yet the second Ethan was injured, she turned around and forgot everything about helping me.Did my injuries ever heal afterward? Did I ever go to the hospital to get treated? She clutched her head in agony. How could she have forgotten everything?Leaning over the desk, her shoulders trembled softly as she stayed awake the entire night.Early the next morning, I was sitting at the table eating breakfast when a knock sounded at the door. It was Clara. Even the most even-tempered person would find it hard to maintain a friendly face after seeing her stand against them in court. Dad immediately grabbed a baseball bat, ready to drive her out of the house. I quickly stood up t

Meanwhile, I was back in my home city. Dad pulled out Mom’s belongings that he hadn’t had time to sort out. His hair had turned gray overnight after Mom’s passing. He had forced himself to hold it together and sort out Mom’s funeral all by himself. Yet, it wasn’t until the day of the funeral that Clara finally showed her face for the first time since Mom died.Dad put on his reading glasses, his hands trembling slightly as he held the storage box.“Peter, you know more about these things than I do. Clean up your mom’s stuff for me. I don’t really understand any of it.”I looked at the three cardboard boxes that Mom had left behind. Right on top was a yellowed photograph. It was a picture of me as a child, sitting in Mom’s lap. Tears welled up in my eyes again, and I quickly wiped them away in secret. When I reached the bottom of the last box, I found an envelope lying there. I opened it, and inside was actually a photocopy of a bank transfer record.Three days before the inciden

She gently lifted her hand to touch her right cheek, as if the pain from the slap was still lingering. When she raised her eyes again, the familiar figure at the operations desk was gone, and an inexplicable sense of panic suddenly overcame her.Ethan stood there, clutching the documents in his hand. Without giving him a second glance, Clara headed straight for the HR department.“Stop Peter Hall’s termination process.”On her way over, she recalled many things and realized that I was always friendly and kind to everyone. Even when it came to mundane tasks, I had always done my job.Felix was stunned. “But… he completed his resignation process yesterday.”Clara’s eyebrows twitched. She was seemingly shocked that I would go so far just to kick up a fuss with her.“Resignation? Who approved it? And why wasn’t I informed?”Felix pulled out the resignation form and placed it on the desk, his fingers trembling slightly. His mind raced as he speculated what I could’ve done to offend t
