Se connecterKeegan left for school and Jagger went back home to her mom’s place in Texas. I was eager to start my senior year and get back on track with my life. I had wished Keegan had said goodbye, but he didn’t. He didn’t even call me. He just left.
Baylen was excited to head off to Arizona. I was so proud of him. What a superstar he was. But that meant I was left at home with my mom. She was always with Ms. Kyren, so I planned to spend a lot of time with Casey. Heading back to school without a boyfriend was weird. I had spent every free period with Keegan during my junior year, so the hallways seemed so bleak without him. I walked quickly to classes now and didn’t linger in the halls. I walked past his old locker and sighed deeply. This is where we used to kiss before going in our separate directions. He would hold me as we almost completely fell inside of his locker, to hide from the teachers. As I reminisced, I was interrupted by someone shouting my name. “Brees Ham! What is up beautiful?” I heard the voice say. I snapped out of my day dream and saw Cyman walking towards me with Harper and Jeff. “Oh hey Cy,” I said, mustering up a smile. “I wanted to invite you to my party this Friday,” Cyman said. “I’m not so sure about that,” I said, pulling my backpack onto one shoulder. I started to walk away but the trio followed. “Oh come on. Casey can come too. And that little sweet number you picked up this summer,” he said, with a grin. “Jagger? What do you even know about her?” I asked, defensively. “Whoa, whoa! I just heard you left Keegan for a hot blonde chick and I was just being nice. Anyways I will text you the details later today. Just think about it!” he said walking off, pulling Harper behind him. Jeff stayed back. I didn’t really feel like talking to him either. “Sorry about Cyman, Brees. I’m also so sorry to hear about you and Keegan. I know I fucked up our relationship. Whatever happened, I know his heart is breaking,” Jeff said. “Thanks Jeff, but I am not so sure about that,” I doubtfully said. “Brees, I know what it’s like to lose you. Trust me, he is not okay,” he said, shyly lowering his head with those words. I guess I hadn’t paid much attention to him after our break up and I didn’t realize he was heart broken. I had moved on with Keegan and not even gave Jeff a second thought. “I’m really sorry Jeff,” I said, slowing my pace. “No. No. It’s I who is sorry. I did not respect you and thought my reputation was more important than yours and for that I am so incredibly apologetic,” he said. “I do hope you come to Cyman’s party. It will be a lot of fun to maybe hang out again.” He walked off in the opposite direction as Casey was coming down the hall. “Oh the fuck he didn’t,” she said, following his path with squinted eyes. “It’s fine Case. Cyman actually invited us to his house for a party Friday,” I said, linking arms with her. “Oh that sounds fun. Like literally anything else besides my grandparents trying to make sure my Japanese is up to par. They are driving me nuts with the lessons. Like I know enough to get me around when we visit them,” she said, dramatically rolling her eyes. Her grandparents were visiting for three months from Japan and she was not loving it. She missed them but also really wanted them to leave. We both planned to go to this big party Friday since everyone has been posting about it and talking about it all week. College kids were even coming. I was game. I found my ripped shorts, a white tank top and my cowboy boots. I was going to look super hot. Friday after school, Casey rode home with me. Our moms said we could have a sleepover, so she had already thrown her backpack in the back of my jeep before school. When we got to my house, it was completely empty. Mom has been practically living at Ms. Kyren’s house. She makes me dinner and then she leaves pretty much every night. I do understand that her kids are little, so it made more sense for my mom to go there. Casey threw her bag onto my bed and started to undress. She plopped on my bed in her black laced underwear and matching bra. She took out her makeup bag and went to work on her already perfect face. I followed suit and started my makeup as well. When we finished, we got dressed. Casey had on a cute, form fitting t-shirt dress. She pulled on her white and blue Jordan’s and cleaned up her mess she made on my bed. We headed to the party. When we arrived there were already about 20 vehicles lined up on his property, in the grass. I could hear music coming from the house as we entered the breezeway. There was a sign on the front door that pointed us to the back of the house for entry, so we followed the directions around to where the pool was. People were actually swimming. I could see Hale jumping into the pool with a dolphin float. Harper was sitting between Cyman’s legs on the side of the pool. He waved us over when he saw us.The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She
Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be
Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee
“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of
I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi
We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
