I put on my red and white Christmas shirt that Alison had given me for my birthday. Casey did my hair in two braids. She left some of my curls out for what she called a whimsical look. I wore a black leather skirt and high black boots. I even did my make up. My red lips would really drive Jeff wild. He absolutely loved when I wore red lipstick.

Casey had on a white sweater dress that was two sizes too big. It fell down her shoulder and exposed her green camisole. She had on fuzzy, high knee socks that had penguins on them. She also wore red lipstick that made her beauty mark on her top lip really pop. She looked like a movie star. Her hair was curled and pinned. It was beautiful.

My mom had made lots of treats and appetizers. She however, did not want to stick around. A bunch of teenagers in her house didn’t seem appealing to her.

“Breesy girl, please make sure you protect that heart of yours,” she warned.

She scooped me into a big hug and kissed my cheek.

“I’m fine mom. I really am,” I said.

She nodded and gave me one last peck before grabbing her overnight bag and leaving for Mrs. Kyren’s house.

Quinn and Jeff were the first to arrive. Casey had invited a cute boy named Gage from our history class to join us. I had to scramble to make his gift fit into the mix, but I did what I always do and I made it happen. Jeff handed me a white package with a peppermint ribbon wrapped around it. I knew his sister wrapped it, because he did not have it in him. I put it under the Charlie Brown tree that mom put out especially for Friendsmas.

Baylen had Christmas music playing low in the background as the fire flickered from the fireplace and laughter filled the air. This wasn’t so bad after all. I thought I would be super sad and not want to participate today after my heart was dragged through hell and back, but I was surprisingly alright.

Jeff pulled me onto his lap. He was sitting in my dad’s big armchair.

“You look absolutely stunning Brees,” he said, nuzzling my neck.

I giggled and thanked him for the compliment. As he was gently playing with my hair and whispering in my ear, I made eye contact with Keegan. He walked through the front door holding two presents. Both were wrapped in black and gold.

I kept my attention on Jeff. I wasn’t about to consort with the likes of Keegan. I did notice out of my peripheral vision that he put one of the gifts on the steps and one under the tree. It piqued my curiosity. Why did he bring two gifts?

“Hey Keegan!” my brother shouted cheerfully. “We have snacks and will start games shortly.”

“Sounds good,” Kegan said, scanning the room for somewhere to sit.

“Come over here dude,” Jeff offered, patting the couch next to us.

I gave him such a look of disdain. Of all the places to sit, Jeff thinks it a good idea to have my ex sitting right next to us as we cuddle in this chairs?

Keegan walked over and plopped down on the sofa.

“Where’s Izzy?” Jeff inquired.

“Oh she is in Italy for a week,” Keegan said.

“Man, that’s crappy timing with you being home right now. You probably miss her huh?” Jeff continued to innocently pry.

“Well we aren’t together anymore so not really,” Keegan said, looking directly at me.

Jeff tightened his grip around my waist. I could tell that Keegan’s words sat heavily on his mind.

“Well you have all those hotties at school, so I’m sure you will bounce back from this man,” Jeff said, reassuringly. .

Keegan nodded and sat back. I wasn’t sure what he was thinking, but I couldn’t concern myself with it. What he possibly did with Isadora last night was really eating at me. I couldn’t even eat today.

Baylen got the games started and made teams. We were playing a trivia game called, “Nobody Knows That.” It was one of my mom’s favorite games. None of us were quite as intelligent as her, but we tried anyway.

“What are the nine parts of speech? You can’t miss any or the other team can steal,” Quinn said, reading a card from the deck.

I was on a team with Gage, and Baylen. Baylen decided he wanted to pass. However, I was pretty confident I could name them. So I took a stab at it.

“Okay I know these. Adverb, preposition, verb, pronoun, noun, adjective, conjunction, interjection and…” I started.

I was stumped on the last one. I scanned the room to see if I could jog my memory, but I was drawing a blank. Finally I gave up.

“Okay, the next team gets to steal if you can give me the final part of speech,” Quinn said, turning towards Keegan’s team.

“It’s a determiner,” Keegan said, smirking at me.

“How the hell did you know that?” Casey asked, slapping Keegan on the shoulder in a celebratory fashion.

“I had a test on them last month and Brees helped me study for it. Those were a part of the grammar section,” he said.

“You were helping him study last month?” Jeff asked.

“I mean yeah, we are friends. Or were friends. It’s not a big deal,” I reassured him.

“It’s kind of a big deal if you are seeing me and still talking to your ex,” Jeff pushed.

I shook my head in disbelief. Jeff isn’t my boyfriend and he knows this is casual. I was very confused as to why he was getting so defensive.

“Jeff, chill out dude. I’ve known this family for a lot longer than you have,” Keegan said standing up.

“The fuck dude, what are you standing up for?” Jeff said, standing as well.

Keegan stepped forward and I shrieked.

“Boys stop!” I shouted.

The morning came in brutally. I rolled over begrudgingly and stopped my alarm. My head was hurting and my mind was racing. I had stayed up all night thinking about Keegan. His game was televised last night and I mindlessly watched. Seeing him actually enter the game in the 4th quarter was breathtaking. Keegan was a freshman so he didn’t get a lot of playing time. But on this day he did. I held my breath every time he was near the ball. Recalling the time from Homecoming when he had been knocked on conscious. My heart went back to that time. When he had seen me in my dress. The way his eyes had went over my body and face. Soaking in every inch. The way he gulped when I came closer. That made me smile. No Brees. Stop it. You aren’t his anymore. Today, I was going to the petting zoo with my softball team. They were doing team bonding. There were mazes, games, food and more at the petting zoo. She thought about the fun she would have with Harper and Quinn. She

Meanwhile, at LSU, Keegan sat on the edge of his dorm bed staring at his phone. Brees was still blocked from nothing on his end. She had blocked him. He had tried once. He’d stared at the message he’d typed for nearly twenty minutes before finally deleting it. I miss you. Too simple. I’m sorry. Not enough. I didn’t mean it. A lie. Because he had meant what he’d said in that moment. He had been scared. Scared of their families. Scared of what happened next. Scared of how serious everything had become. But he’d never been scared of Brees. That was the part he couldn’t explain. He could face thousands of people in a stadium. He could handle the pressure of LSU. He could handle everything his future demanded from him. But the thought of admitting how much he loved his best friend’s little sister terrified him. And now he’d lost her. He wanted to drive home and scoop her up in his arms and let her know that his love for her had not changed and that they needed to be

Brees thought blocking Keegan would make it easier. It didn’t.It just made everything quieter. His name no longer appeared on her phone. No late-night texts. No random pictures from his day.No stupid videos he knew would make her laugh when she was trying not to.No You awake? at midnight.Nothing.And somehow, nothing hurt worse than everything. She had stared at his contact for almost ten minutes before finally pressing Block Contact. Her thumb had hovered over the button.Once.Twice.Three times. Then she had done it.Because she couldn’t keep being the girl who waited for Keegan to decide what they were.Especially after what happened in front of their mothers. After her mom found out they’d been sleeping together, Keegan had promised her.“It won’t happen again.”Brees had wanted him to promise they would be safe. Not that it would never happen again. She had wanted that promise to mean he was choosing her.Instead, when their mothers asked what was happening between them, Kee

“Wow, okay. Yeah, we are focusing on our sports and I’m getting more serious about Jagger since she is moving here next semester,” I said. His head whipped around so quickly. He looked confused. After our moms excused themselves, he moved closer to me on the couch. “Brees, what did you mean about you and Jagger?” he asked. “Well you said we weren’t together, so I assumed that meant what you said this morning about being in love with me was complete bull crap. What was that Kee?” I asked. At this point I was holding tears inside so hard that I thought my heart might explode. He grabbed my hand and didn’t let me pull away. “I felt like that was the right thing to say for now. Your mom seemed upset that we have been having sex. I didn’t want to give her anything else to worry about. I’m really sorry I said that. You know I absolutely love you with all my heart Squirt,” he said, bumping my chin. I shook my head. “No Keegan, I don’t know that. You have had a weird way of

I looked at her with my mouth agape. Was she seriously having this conversation with Keegan in the next room? RAP! RAP! A knock on the door saved the day. Keegan poked his head inside and Ms. Kyren was right behind him. “You guys all good in here?” he asked. I nodded and tried to push him out of the room, but my mom made him sit down on the couch instead. “Join us for a moment you two. I was just discussing the protocol of safe sex with Brees,” my mom blurted. How embarrassing. She really didn’t need to do this right here just because Casey slipped up. Keegan fidgeted a bit and looked at his mom for reassurance. You could see how uncomfortable he was. “Oh they are safe Missy. I told Keegan they needed protection every time they were together and he promised me that they would,” Ms. Kyren said. My mom’s face turned a deep shade of red. I don’t think she was ready to hear that I had already been sleeping with Keegan. She turned to me specifically. Her eyes narrowing in on mi

We made our way to my mom’s house. When we arrived I saw Casey’s car in the driveway. I was happy that she came. I had invited her, but she had been missing in action all day. She got out of her car when she saw me and she ran to me. It looked like she had been crying. I reached out and hugged her tightly. “What’s wrong my Casey girl? Did Cyman do something?” I asked. She nodded her head aggressively. Keegan looked at me and smiled and excused himself after giving Casey a warm hug. He went into the house so that we could talk. “So remember during the back to school party you saw Cyman and I… well we were sleeping together up until Thanksgiving Break,” Casey said wiping tears on her jean jacket. “Okay. I knew this information Case. What’s the deal?” I badgered. I will admit, I was a little perplexed that she was even bringing up his name when she knows I can’t stand him after how he treated her. “James… I’m pregnant,” Casey sputtered out. I almost dropped my phone. Did she ju
