I awoke the next day feeling rejuvenated and ready to see Casey. She was coming with us to the B&B parties tonight. I could not wait to see my Wren. I grabbed a bagel from the counter and headed out to Casey’s. I had to get gas in my mom’s car first. As I was pumping gas, I heard a familiar voice say my name.

“Brees Ham! How are you girl?” Cyman said.

“Omgoodness, hey Cy. How the heck are you? I haven’t seen you in three years!” I said, reaching out to hug him with one arm.

“I am doing okay. I was wondering, um, well—How is Casey? She seemed to have left town so quickly after Christmas break our senior year. I felt like it was because I had broken her heart. Man, I was a tool. Have you seen her?” He pleaded.

“Uh. I am actually on my way to her house right now to see her and…” I hesitated.

Cyman didn’t know about Wren. He had no idea that he was a father and that Casey had been keeping her in Japan all of these years. I was against it, but it wasn’t my fight. Casey was adamant about keeping Wren a secret and so I helped her do that. Only my family knew she had Wren. Not even our other friends knew.

“Well can you tell her I said hello? I think about her often. I really screwed that up huh? She was probably the absolute love of my life B. Shoot! I’m sorry, that came out of nowhere,” he said.

“It’s okay Cy. I get it. We are all such different people than we were back then. Are you still at Tulane?” I asked.

He nodded. I could see his solemn expression. He really did miss Casey. I wish she knew. I bet he would love his daughter as much as he loves her.

“Cy, we are all going to New Orleans tonight. You should grab some friends and venture down there. I’m sure Casey would love to see you,” I said, giving him one last hug.

“Yeah, I just might do that,” he said, giving me a squeeze and heading off.

Crap! What did I just do? I should not have told him to come to New Orleans. Casey is going to send me home in a body bag.

When I arrived at Casey’s, I could see Wren in the window. Her little face lit up when she saw me. I ran as fast as I could to open the door and grab that little peanut.

“Oh hi to you too James!” Casey shouted at me, as I snuggled my god daughter.

“I’m sorry. Hi my love,” I said, squeezing her as tightly as I could.

Mrs. Sato came and got Wren for her nap. Case and I went to the kitchen to grab some water.

“So Case. Don’t kill me, but I saw Cyman at the gas station,” I started.

Her brown eyes looked up from her glass and fixed themselves on me.

“And?” She asked.

“Well I may have invited him tonight,” I said, hiding in my t-shirt.

“Are you fucking kidding me James?” She yelled.

“But Case. He was like a lost puppy without you. He even called you the love of his life,” I said.

Her face softened. I saw a small smile start to form in the corners of her mouth.

“Why would he say that? You didn’t tell him about her did you?” She asked.

“No, not at all. He just misses you and felt like he never got a chance to make it up to you. I mean you did leave in January that year. He never stood a chance,” I said.

“I can’t open that door again. He was awful to me. He didn’t choose me. He didn’t choose us,” she said.

“He didn’t have a chance to choose her. You chose for him,” I said, sharply.

Casey had no reason to keep this baby from Cyman. Even if he didn’t want the baby, it was still his decision to make. She knew I hated that more than anything.

“James, we aren’t going to do this again. He isn’t going to know and that is final. I can’t put her or myself through the pain if he decides he doesn’t want her,” she said, halting the conversation.

I kept thinking about how much Wren looked like Cyman. She had his green eyes and his smile. There was no way he would see her and say he didn’t want her. I made plans for the party bus to grab Casey from her house tonight. I promised her that I would call Cyman to tell him not to come, but the number that I had wasn’t in service. I asked Baylen if he could and he did.

“I came to get my girl,” he said. The words fell off of his tongue like sweet honey. His girl. That had to be the sexiest thing he has ever said. “Your girl? When did I become your girl?” I asked, breathing heavy. He lifted my chin and rubbed his thumb on my lips.“You’ve always been my girl. Even when you were someone else’s. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” he said. He leaned in and I knew he was going to kiss me.“Kee,” I said, softly and with no will power left. “Can I please,” he begged, rubbing my lips once more. A magnetic energy pulled him towards me and I let down my guard. Our lips softly touched. “How does this work though?” I asked. “Well that’s what I came to tell you. I stay about three hours from here now,” he said.“Huh? How? Why?” I asked.“I was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Brees. I live here now,” he said. “Are you serious? Oh my gosh, Keegan! Congratulations!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around his neck.He lifted me onto the counter, so that

Three months had gone by since I had been home. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Keegan. He texted me and called me, but I never answered. To talk to him would mean I would have to tear the bandaid off of my heart and I wasn’t ready for that. I finished my junior year of college and I was preparing myself mentally to go home for the summer. Softball players stayed on campus for a month longer than other students, due to our schedules. Since Keegan was probably drafted already, he wouldn’t be at the house. I begged everyone not to tell me anything about him and I avoided social media and television. It gave me the perfect opportunity to get home and bond with the twins and my mom. Quinn and Baylen were moving into their house too, so I wanted to be there to support them. They were living closer to my dad though but it was only about a 20 minute drive. I also was eager to spend time with Wren and Casey. Since Casey had finally accepted Cyman’s proposal, I’m sure there was another wedding t

I sat up. “How can you say that? That was a goodbye kiss, and you know it. You going with her, knowing how she feels about you, isn’t something I can ignore. Am I supposed to wait while you play house with Haven?”I stood, stepping out of his reach.“Brees,” he pleaded, “I love you. Please come sit with me. I’m leaving in like ten minutes. I don’t want to spend our last moments together fighting. .”I shook my head. “I can’t be that girl anymore.”“Eight weeks,” he said. “We can survive eight weeks. I swear it’ll be worth it.”I wanted to believe him. My heart refused.“Let’s revisit this in eight weeks then. If you love me now, you will love me then,” I said.He reached for me again just as the door opened.“James?” Casey said. “You okay?”I nodded, then ran to her, burying my face in her shoulder.“Brees, please,” Keegan said behind me. “Not like this.”“Kee,” Casey cut in coldly, “I just saw Haven’s car down the street. She looked like she was freshening up for her boy toy. You sho

Casey was coming over to help me pack. Tomorrow, I’d be back in Tennessee. Today, Keegan was leaving with Haven.Nothing tasted right. Sounds I usually loved, the birds, the kids laughing outside, fell flat. Time moved without me, thick and slow, like I was watching my life through glass.Keegan had broken me again, and I didn’t know how to stitch myself back together. With both of us leaving, distance felt like the only mercy. I stayed out of the shared spaces, avoided the kitchen, the living room, anywhere I might run into him. I knew he’d want to explain. I didn’t have the strength to listen. I loved him, but what we shared the other night, made that door closed for good. I longed for him, but he had to live his life and I had to live mine. I told myself I was done. I’d moved on with Tate. We’d been good for almost a year. I hadn’t thought about Keegan at all. But the second I saw him, everything came rushing back: love, want, muscle memory. And sleeping with him again, made it im

She was being very weird this morning. “How did you sleep Keegan?” She asked.“Fine mom. The guest room bed is way more comfortable than the one in my apartment,” he said, grabbing the creamer from the fridge. “How would you know? You didn’t sleep in it,” she said, looking at him over her glass. We both turned to look at her. I’m sure my jaw was on the ground. “Mom, don’t start this. Not this morning,” he pleaded. “I didn’t say anything. I just want you to stay focused with so much at hand this year. I don’t want you to fall back into whatever this is again,” she said. Did she think I was a risk to his career? It sure seemed like that’s what she was saying. I’ve always felt like she never wanted me and Keegan to be together. It always sat quietly in the back of my mind.“Mom, what I do with Brees is my business. Her and I have a lot to figure out, without you meddling,” he said.“Just looking out for you. I mean look at Casey. Is that how you want to end up? With a kid while you

We lay together all night. He rubbed my back as I lay on his chest. I hadn’t even put my clothes back on yet. I was soaking in the moment. I couldn’t believe after four years I was back in his arms. The sun was coming up and I knew our parents would be up soon.“Kee,” I whispered, kissing his chin, “We gotta get up.”He opened his eyes slightly and looked at me. His face lit up as he realized what had happened was real. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. “Just lie here with me a little while longer. I’ve never spent the night with you,” he said.I obliged. I wasn’t in a hurry to let him go either. We didn’t speak. We just held each other. There was a deafening silence that I couldn’t help but notice. What did last night mean for us? Would we try to make a relationship work? What about Haven and his brand deals? There were so many questions, but I pushed them all away so I could enjoy this moment. So,” he says, “Last night.”I let out a short breath that’s
