LOGINI got up and went to the other bar near the back of the venue. It was less crowded and away from Haven and Keegan.
Was I jealous of Haven? Her beautiful accent and charismatic charm had won Keegan over. Did he love her? Had they been together for a while? The questions were overwhelming. I needed to stop thinking about it. I downed my drink and asked for another. The night had just begun and I already wanted to go home. Seeing him and her together made me cringe. I hated the way it made my heart race and my stomach ache. There was still a part of me that wanted Keeg— “Hey Squirt! Can I sit?” Keegan asked, pulling up a stool next to me. I was shocked at first and then confused. He was just caressing Haven and spinning her on the dance floor. I looked at him over my glass, trying to hide behind the cherry stem. I knew he could read me like a book and I didn’t want him to sense my jealousy. “Um, what happened with you and Haven?” I inquired. “Me and Haven? We were done dancing I guess. She found a guy to hang out with,” he said, pointing to the dance floor. I followed his tan arm and saw she was getting friendly with another guy. “That doesn’t bother you?” I asked. “Wait. Oh! She is my publicist. Did you think we were together? No, Squirt. As I am entering the draft, my agent wants Haven everywhere that I am to ensure she can spin anything that happens,” he said, nodding in her direction. “What might happen?” I asked. He leaned in close and put his lips to my ear, “I might meet a pretty girl and take her home.” I pulled away. Did my flirting make him think he had an open pass to flirt with me? “Keegan, I am seeing Tate. We are pretty serious,” I said, pushing myself away from him. “No worries Brees, I was just teasing,” he said, reaching out his hand. “Dance with me.” I hesitated. I didn’t want to be in close proximity with him. He stood there with his hand extended, and I resisted as long as I could. He gave me the cutest smile and tilted his head to the side, and eventually I took his hand and let him lead me to the dance floor. I fumbled with my hands for a moment. I wasn’t sure where to put them. He grabbed one of my hands and brought it around his neck. He placed the other on his chest. I felt his hands move around my waist area. This was familiar. I hadn’t been with him like this in years, but I recognized that feeling. As we swayed, I inhaled his cologne. He smelled so good. “How is school? I saw your team whooped Georgia in the last game,” he said. “You saw me play?” I asked. “I have watched every single game since your freshman year Brees,” he said, his eyes staring into mine with a warmness that filled my entire body. “Wow. I had no idea. That’s really, um, sweet Keegan,” I said. “I wasn’t trying to be sweet Brees. You are such a natural talent and I’ve always enjoyed watching you. Even if you didn’t want me to, I was cheering you on for every game,” he said, stopping our sway.“I came to get my girl,” he said. The words fell off of his tongue like sweet honey. His girl. That had to be the sexiest thing he has ever said. “Your girl? When did I become your girl?” I asked, breathing heavy. He lifted my chin and rubbed his thumb on my lips.“You’ve always been my girl. Even when you were someone else’s. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” he said. He leaned in and I knew he was going to kiss me.“Kee,” I said, softly and with no will power left. “Can I please,” he begged, rubbing my lips once more. A magnetic energy pulled him towards me and I let down my guard. Our lips softly touched. “How does this work though?” I asked. “Well that’s what I came to tell you. I stay about three hours from here now,” he said.“Huh? How? Why?” I asked.“I was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Brees. I live here now,” he said. “Are you serious? Oh my gosh, Keegan! Congratulations!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around his neck.He lifted me onto the counter, so that
Three months had gone by since I had been home. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Keegan. He texted me and called me, but I never answered. To talk to him would mean I would have to tear the bandaid off of my heart and I wasn’t ready for that. I finished my junior year of college and I was preparing myself mentally to go home for the summer. Softball players stayed on campus for a month longer than other students, due to our schedules. Since Keegan was probably drafted already, he wouldn’t be at the house. I begged everyone not to tell me anything about him and I avoided social media and television. It gave me the perfect opportunity to get home and bond with the twins and my mom. Quinn and Baylen were moving into their house too, so I wanted to be there to support them. They were living closer to my dad though but it was only about a 20 minute drive. I also was eager to spend time with Wren and Casey. Since Casey had finally accepted Cyman’s proposal, I’m sure there was another wedding t
I sat up. “How can you say that? That was a goodbye kiss, and you know it. You going with her, knowing how she feels about you, isn’t something I can ignore. Am I supposed to wait while you play house with Haven?”I stood, stepping out of his reach.“Brees,” he pleaded, “I love you. Please come sit with me. I’m leaving in like ten minutes. I don’t want to spend our last moments together fighting. .”I shook my head. “I can’t be that girl anymore.”“Eight weeks,” he said. “We can survive eight weeks. I swear it’ll be worth it.”I wanted to believe him. My heart refused.“Let’s revisit this in eight weeks then. If you love me now, you will love me then,” I said.He reached for me again just as the door opened.“James?” Casey said. “You okay?”I nodded, then ran to her, burying my face in her shoulder.“Brees, please,” Keegan said behind me. “Not like this.”“Kee,” Casey cut in coldly, “I just saw Haven’s car down the street. She looked like she was freshening up for her boy toy. You sho
Casey was coming over to help me pack. Tomorrow, I’d be back in Tennessee. Today, Keegan was leaving with Haven.Nothing tasted right. Sounds I usually loved, the birds, the kids laughing outside, fell flat. Time moved without me, thick and slow, like I was watching my life through glass.Keegan had broken me again, and I didn’t know how to stitch myself back together. With both of us leaving, distance felt like the only mercy. I stayed out of the shared spaces, avoided the kitchen, the living room, anywhere I might run into him. I knew he’d want to explain. I didn’t have the strength to listen. I loved him, but what we shared the other night, made that door closed for good. I longed for him, but he had to live his life and I had to live mine. I told myself I was done. I’d moved on with Tate. We’d been good for almost a year. I hadn’t thought about Keegan at all. But the second I saw him, everything came rushing back: love, want, muscle memory. And sleeping with him again, made it im
She was being very weird this morning. “How did you sleep Keegan?” She asked.“Fine mom. The guest room bed is way more comfortable than the one in my apartment,” he said, grabbing the creamer from the fridge. “How would you know? You didn’t sleep in it,” she said, looking at him over her glass. We both turned to look at her. I’m sure my jaw was on the ground. “Mom, don’t start this. Not this morning,” he pleaded. “I didn’t say anything. I just want you to stay focused with so much at hand this year. I don’t want you to fall back into whatever this is again,” she said. Did she think I was a risk to his career? It sure seemed like that’s what she was saying. I’ve always felt like she never wanted me and Keegan to be together. It always sat quietly in the back of my mind.“Mom, what I do with Brees is my business. Her and I have a lot to figure out, without you meddling,” he said.“Just looking out for you. I mean look at Casey. Is that how you want to end up? With a kid while you
We lay together all night. He rubbed my back as I lay on his chest. I hadn’t even put my clothes back on yet. I was soaking in the moment. I couldn’t believe after four years I was back in his arms. The sun was coming up and I knew our parents would be up soon.“Kee,” I whispered, kissing his chin, “We gotta get up.”He opened his eyes slightly and looked at me. His face lit up as he realized what had happened was real. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. “Just lie here with me a little while longer. I’ve never spent the night with you,” he said.I obliged. I wasn’t in a hurry to let him go either. We didn’t speak. We just held each other. There was a deafening silence that I couldn’t help but notice. What did last night mean for us? Would we try to make a relationship work? What about Haven and his brand deals? There were so many questions, but I pushed them all away so I could enjoy this moment. So,” he says, “Last night.”I let out a short breath that’s
