The explosion shook the orphanage like an earthquake.

BOOM!

The office windows rattled violently.

The teacup on Mrs. Martha’s desk crashed onto the floor, shattering into dozens of tiny pieces.

Outside…

Children screamed.

Emily instinctively flinched as the sound echoed through the building.

“What was that?”

Before anyone could answer, another explosion tore through the afternoon.

BOOM!

This one was closer.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Somewhere down the hallway, a little girl burst into frightened tears.

Mrs. Martha’s face drained of color.

“The children…”

Without thinking, Emily spun toward the door.

“I have to—”

A firm hand caught her wrist.

She looked back.

Adrian Kingsley.

His expression had completely changed.

The calm, composed businessman she had met only minutes ago was gone.

In his place stood a man whose eyes had turned dangerously cold.

“You are not going out there.”

Emily stared at him.

“What?”

“The children are out there!”

“I know.”

“So let me go!”

“No.”

His answer came without hesitation.

Emily yanked her arm, but his grip didn’t loosen.

“Are you serious?”

“I’m very serious.”

“They’re terrified!”

“And so am I.”

The words slipped from Adrian before he could stop them.

For a heartbeat…

The room fell silent.

Emily blinked.

He was…

Afraid?

Before she could question it—

The office door flew open.

One of Dante’s bodyguards rushed inside, breathing heavily.

“Boss!”

Dante turned immediately.

“What happened?”

“There are six vehicles blocking the front gate.”

“Only six?”

The bodyguard nodded.

“But they’re heavily armed.”

Dante’s expression didn’t change.

Instead…

He reached beneath his coat.

Emily’s eyes widened as he calmly drew a black pistol.

He checked the magazine.

Loaded.

With the same casual expression someone might have while checking the time.

Emily’s mouth slowly fell open.

“…Is that real?”

Dante glanced at her.

“What?”

“The gun!”

He looked at it.

“Oh.”

“Yes.”

“You carry that around?”

“I carry two.”

Emily pointed at him in complete disbelief.

“You have two guns?”

“I have three.”

A bodyguard cleared his throat.

“Four, Boss.”

“Oh.”

“I forgot about the ankle holster.”

Emily looked as though her brain had stopped working.

Mrs. Martha pinched the bridge of her nose.

“Mr. Moretti…”

“There are children in this building.”

“I know.”

“I won’t fire unless I have to.”

Emily slowly turned toward Adrian.

“…Is he always like this?”

Adrian answered without even looking at Dante.

“Unfortunately.”

“I can hear you,” Dante replied.

“I intended for you to.”

Despite the tension, Emily couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Two of the most powerful men she’d ever met…

Were arguing while someone was apparently attacking the orphanage.

“Are you both insane?”

Neither answered.

Dante pressed a finger against the tiny earpiece hidden beneath his hair.

“Status.”

A voice crackled through.

“Perimeter secure on the east side.”

Another voice interrupted.

“West entrance compromised.”

A third followed almost immediately.

“Boss… they’re not trying to get in.”

Dante frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“They’re…”

The voice hesitated.

“…they’re waiting.”

The room became still.

Waiting?

For what?

Adrian’s gaze darkened.

“They’re expecting someone.”

Dante nodded once.

“I know.”

His eyes slowly shifted toward Emily.

For the first time…

She felt a chill run down her spine.

“What?”

Neither man answered.

Emily looked between them.

“Why are you both looking at me?”

Silence.

The bodyguard swallowed hard before speaking.

“Boss…”

“We intercepted one of their radio transmissions.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“What did they say?”

The guard took a slow breath.

His next words sent an icy silence through the room.

“They said…”

“…Target Zero has been located.”

Emily frowned.

“Target…”

“…Zero?”

She laughed awkwardly.

“That’s obviously not me.”

Nobody laughed.

Mrs. Martha’s hands began to tremble.

Adrian slowly closed his eyes.

Dante cursed under his breath.

Emily’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“What does that mean?”

Still…

No one answered.

Outside—

A loudspeaker crackled to life.

A distorted voice echoed across the orphanage grounds.

“Hand over Subject Zero.”

“Or everyone inside dies.”

Morning came quietly. For the first time in what felt like forever, Emily woke up without the sound of alarms. No shouting. No running footsteps. No breaking glass. No masked men.Just sunlight.Soft golden light slipped through the hospital curtains, spreading across the room and warming the pale walls.Emily blinked slowly. For a few seconds, she didn’t remember where she was. Then she felt the hospital blanket covering her.She heard the faint beeping of the monitor beside the bed.And suddenly, everything came rushing back. The orphanage. The fire.Lily.The attack. The strange blue symbol on her wrist.Helix.Subject Zero. Her father.Or fathers.Whatever the truth was.Emily groaned and pulled the blanket over her face.“Too early.”A small voice came from beside her.“It’s almost nine.”Emily froze. She slowly lowered the blanket.Lily was sitting on the other bed, staring at her.Emily frowned.“You’re awake?”Lily nodded.“I’ve been awake.”“How long?”“Since seven.”Emily st

The hospital had finally settled into an uneasy quiet. The chaos of the night had faded into the soft beeping of monitors and the occasional footsteps of nurses moving through the pediatric ward. Most of the children were asleep now. Some had been given medication for their injuries, while others simply seemed exhausted from everything they had endured.Emily, however, couldn’t sleep. She remained beside Lily’s bed, her fingers loosely wrapped around the little girl’s hand. Lily had fallen asleep hours ago, but Emily still hadn’t moved. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the orphanage again—the smoke, the screaming children, the masked men, and that strange blue symbol burning beneath her skin. And then there was the voice she’d heard inside her head.Run.They’re coming.Emily shivered. She looked down at her wrist. The symbol was no longer glowing brightly. It had faded to a faint blue mark beneath her skin, almost as though it had never been there at all.Almost.“You’re going

The helicopters hovered over the orphanage, their searchlights sweeping across the broken windows and smoke-filled courtyard. The sound was deafening, but somehow it wasn’t the helicopters that frightened Emily the most. It was the silence that had settled over the men around her.Adrian stood in front of her, his body tense as he watched the aircraft above. Dante remained a few feet away, his gun raised and his eyes moving from one window to another. Neither man seemed willing to explain what the symbol meant, and Emily was beginning to realize that whatever secret they were hiding was much bigger than she had imagined. Then she heard it.A child crying.Emily’s attention immediately shifted away from the helicopters.“The children.”She looked toward Adrian. “We have to get them out.”Adrian turned toward her. “Stay close to me.”Emily shook her head. “I know where they’re hiding.”Before Adrian could stop her, she hurried down the smoke-filled hallway.“Emily!”Dante followed, moti

They had really hoped Emily would never develop it.Adrian’s face had gone completely pale. For several seconds, he simply stared at the glowing symbol on Emily’s wrist as though the sight of it had confirmed his worst nightmare. Beside him, Dante had gone unusually still. The confidence that had filled his expression only moments ago was gone, replaced by something Emily had never expected to see from him.Fear.Real, unmistakable fear.Emily noticed.Even through the dizziness clouding her mind, she noticed the way both men were looking at her.“Why…”Her voice trembled as she pressed her hand against the wall.“Why are you looking at me like that?”Neither man answered. The blue symbol pulsed beneath her skin again.Once.Twice.Then a sharp wave of pain shot through her arm.Emily gasped and grabbed her wrist.“Ah!”Adrian immediately moved toward her.“Emily!”Dante caught his arm before he could reach her.“Don’t.”Adrian turned sharply.“Let go of me.”“You don’t know what will

Silence fell over the hallway. For one brief, terrifying moment, even the children seemed to forget how to breathe.Dante Moretti stood at the end of the corridor, the barrel of his pistol still smoking slightly in his hand. His amber eyes were fixed on the masked man who had one arm wrapped around Emily, holding her firmly against him.Dante’s expression was frighteningly calm.He wasn’t shouting. He wasn’t making threats. He simply looked at the man’s hand on Emily’s shoulder and said, in a voice so quiet that everyone heard it clearly,“Take your hand off my daughter.”Emily’s breath caught. My daughter? The words seemed to echo inside her head. The masked man looked at Dante for a moment before letting out a low chuckle.“And if I don’t?”Dante’s mouth curved into a cold smile.“Then today becomes the last day your family remembers your name.”A shiver moved through the hallway.Behind Dante, his men stepped forward as one.
