The entire drive was filled with Amora and Riley catching up on past events, talking about school, and sharing inside jokes. I only pitched into the conversation whenever I was explicitly needed, spending most of the car ride staring down at my phone screen. Miles didn't even bother to crack a single joke or tease me like he usually did. His sudden silence made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. I pressed my forehead firmly against the cool glass of the car window as we drove through a pair of enormous, elegant white security gates. “Oh my God,” I breathed out softly. The luxury resort looked less like a normal vacation destination and more like a private island where high-profile celebrities secretly disappeared to whenever they got tired of ordinary life. Massive white stone buildings stretched beautifully across the sunny coastline, their private balconies overflowing with bright pink flowers. Tall palm trees swayed lazily in the warm tropical breeze. Beyond the main reception building, I could see the sparkling, crystal-clear turquoise water stretching endlessly out toward the horizon. “This place is totally insane,” Riley whispered excitedly right beside me. The car smoothly pulled into a wide, circular driveway where several modern golf carts were waiting to transport the guests around the massive property. A uniformed resort attendant immediately stepped forward and opened my passenger door. “Welcome to Azure Cove Resort,” he said with a polite bow. I stepped out of the vehicle and nearly melted from the delicious warmth of the Mediterranean sunshine. The fresh air smelled like saltwater, expensive sunscreen, and fresh citrus fruit. “Okay, now I officially never want to go back home,” Riley announced to the group. “Same here,” I agreed completely. Inside the main lobby, everything was bright, open, and incredibly elegant. The ceiling stretched two stories high, supported by massive, polished white stone columns. Crystal chandeliers sparkled like diamonds overhead, while a beautiful stone fountain bubbled softly right in the center of the room. A long, luxury marble reception desk sat at the far end of the lobby. The resort staff already seemed fully prepared for our arrival. “Welcome, Thompson family,” a smiling receptionist greeted us warmly. She handed out elegant navy-blue wristbands for us to wear, along with sleek room keycards embossed with the resort's shiny gold logo. Each guest also received a small white envelope containing our activity passes. I opened mine up immediately to read the front card. AZURE COVE FAMILY EXPERIENCE PACKAGE Included Activities: Beach Volleyball Tournament Jet Ski Racing Paddleboarding & Kayaking Snorkeling Excursion Sunset Bonfire “Jet skiing?” Riley gasped out, her eyes going wide with excitement. “I am absolutely doing that today.” The receptionist handed Uncle David a sleek leather folder containing our daily itinerary. “Your reserved beach pavilion will be fully available for your use all day long. The family tennis tournament begins in approximately forty-five minutes on the main courts.” “Perfect,” Uncle David said with a satisfied nod. “Forty-five minutes?” Riley repeated, turning to face me. “That gives us almost no time to change into our sports gear. We need to go right now!” She grabbed my wrist tightly and started dragging me toward the dressing rooms. A little while later, we were all standing on the tennis courts dressed in matching tennis gear. The outfits were color-coded: pink tennis skirts and tops for the girls, and blue polo shirts and shorts for the guys. It was a doubles match, meaning there would be two players on each team. “Ava, you'll be on Miles's team,” Riley announced out of nowhere as we stepped onto the hard court. “What?! No way!” I protested immediately, my heart doing a strange little flip. “I know he is completely insufferable, Ava, but Amora is kind of shy around our other cousins. I really want to help her bring her out of her shell, so I need to be her partner for this match. You know I would never trade you, my lifetime partner, for something lame,” she said, pouting her lips and giving me big puppy-dog eyes. I let out a heavy sigh. “Fine,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Yes, girl! Now please don't be too harsh on us out there,” she cheered. “You know I'm not going to do that,” I said, picking up my sports bag to walk over to the opposite side of the tennis net. We stood on our side of the court, still waiting for Miles to finally show up. I wondered what on earth was taking him forever. He had probably met some random girl on his way to the dressing room and got distracted. I rolled my eyes in disgust at the very thought of it. “Dork?” I lifted my head up quickly. Miles was suddenly standing right in front of me on the court. “Took you long enough,” I said, crossing my arms. “What are you even doing over here? I thought I was playing on a team with Dad,” he said, folding his arms over his chest like a grumpy nine-year-old kid. “Well, 'Dad' is currently over there on the second court playing a match with your aunt,” I pointed out. He huffed out a loud breath, looking totally annoyed. “Do you even know how to properly play tennis?” he asked, looking down at me. “Watch and be amazed, Thompson,” I said, standing up straight and grabbing my tennis racquet. He gave me a small, dark smirk before walking away to take his position.MILES I finished dressing up in my fresh clothes, grabbed my bag, and walked right out of the bathroom. “Miles! Over here!” Chloe waved her hand wildly from a large table across the resort's outdoor dining patio. I looked around the crowded space. Ava, Amora, and Riley were sitting together at a completely different table on the opposite side of the patio, already eating their lunch. I let out a soft sigh as I walked over to join Chloe and Millie instead. “I keep forgetting you guys are even on this family trip with us,” I said sarcastically as I slid into an empty seat at their table. “Well, you never actually come over to check up on us anyway. You're always trailing behind your sister and her bestie,” Millie said, taking a large bite of a fried chicken wing from her plate. I scoffed loudly. “You guys are the ones who are constantly keeping to yourselves,” I said. Without even asking for permission, I reached over and snatched the other chicken wing right off her plate, poppi
MILES “I really missed my right-hand man,” my dad said proudly, patting my shoulder with a heavy hand. I rolled my eyes playfully. “You were the one who completely abandoned me, Dad.” “What?! That is absolutely impossible!” he laughed out loud. “Well, he simply couldn't bear to leave his beloved behind,” my mom chimed in with a sweet smile. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, leaning in to give him a bunch of loud, mushy kisses right in front of me. “Please stop,” I groaned, turning around and walking away from them. “Baby, come back here!” my mom called out, laughing at my reaction. “I am honestly not interested in seeing all of that,” I called back over my shoulder, keeping my pace steady. I walked straight into the resort locker room bathrooms to change out of my damp tennis gear and back into my regular casual clothes. While I was standing near the sinks, a guy with brown hair suddenly walked right up to me. He was basically the exact same height as me, but he wa
AVA “Try not to trip over your own feet, dork,” Miles said, bouncing the tennis ball on the strings of his racquet as he took his spot next to me near the baseline. He had that stupid, cocky grin plastered across his face—the exact one that always made me want to smack him. I rolled my eyes hard. “Just try to keep up, Thompson. Don’t embarrass me out here in front of your family.” Riley and Amora stood directly on the opposite side of the net. Riley looked completely ready to destroy us, while Amora seemed a little nervous, nervously fiddling with the grip of her racquet. “Hey, no pressure, Amora!” I called out over the net with a friendly smile. “We’re just messing around and having some fun, okay?” “Yeah,” Riley added, giving her cousin a gentle, supportive nudge with her elbow. “Don’t worry if you miss a shot. We’re all super rusty anyway.” Amora smiled, looking a bit more relaxed. “Thanks, guys. I honestly haven’t played tennis since I was a little kid.” Miles leaned down t

AVA “You should definitely go with the blue shorts,” Riley said, pointing her finger at the pile of clothing options scattered across my mattress. The outfit she picked was a cute, knitted set with a matching knitted halter-top. “Yeah, you're entirely right,” I said, picking up the blue set and tossing the other clothes back into my suitcase. “Oh my gosh, I am just so excited!” Riley squealed, playfully kicking her feet in the air as she lay down flat on the bed. She had already been fully dressed and ready to go for over an hour. I guess she simply couldn't contain her absolute excitement for today. We were all going to a luxury beach resort for some mandatory “family time” before the big anniversary dinner scheduled for tomorrow night. To be completely honest, going to a beautiful resort sounded a million times better than just rotting in bed all day doing nothing. Chloe and Millie, along with their parents, had already left for the resort hours ago. It was so typical of them.
AVA I looked straight out the window at the passing city lights and pulled my phone out of my pocket. I slowly scrolled through my social media apps, doing absolutely nothing in particular on the screen, just using it as a shield to calm my racing nerves. After an hour of absolute silence on my end, we finally arrived back at the luxury family villa. Thank goodness. To make up for being late, Miles took all the heavy bags out of the car himself. All Riley and I had to do was just walk inside the house empty-handed. I knew deep down he was only doing it to stay on his dad’s good side, but I wasn't going to complain. He followed us all the way up to our shared bedroom, carrying the mountain of clothes we bought. “Just put them right on the bed,” Riley said as she kicked her high-heeled sandals off her tired feet. Miles tossed the bags onto the mattress, but then he started playfully peeking inside them to see what we bought. “What the fuck, Riles?” he suddenly said, laugh
AVA“Harper.”Miles’s voice sounded right behind me, scaring me half to death. I gasped, dropping my hands to the counter. He had a fresh t-shirt on now, his hair still damp. An amused look danced in his eyes. “It is just the two of us in the house, dork. Why are you getting all scared?” he asked,
